Chapter Five

“So I was talking to Alice the other day…” Michael rolled his eyes at his best friend, Eric Weiss. The two were playing pool and Michael thought for the millionth time about Eric’s ability to ruin a good moment with stupid topics.

“Eric, c’mon. We’re over and you know it.”

“Yeah, but does she?” Michael sighed and took another sip of his beer and aligned his shot on the pool table.

“Umm… sort of?” He took the shot and sunk the ball perfectly.

Eric stared at him incredulously. “What, you didn’t break up with her?”

Michael ran a hand through his hair and sighed. “I went away for eight freaking months… what else does she need?”

“Well apparently she doesn’t know you’re over.”

Somehow ‘shock’ just didn’t cut it at the moment for Michael. “You’re kidding me.”

“Nah, I’m serious. If you hadn’t gone away you’d probably still be with her.”

“For this long? No way.”

“Do you still like her?”

“No… yeah… I don’t know…” It was the truth. Michael honestly had no idea about his feelings for Alice. Sure, he still liked her… but in that way? He just didn’t know. It had been eight months and it was too hard to tell.

“She’s always been so clingy and she probably expects you guys to just go back to how you were.” Eric cussed as his ball bounced off the corner of the hole.

“Oh, great.”

“Dude, you gotta talk to her.”

“Yeah…” he said as he aligned his next shot. As much as he didn’t want to, he knew that Alice being Alice would find him sometime and demand to know why he hadn’t called. Yup, this isn’t gonna be fun.

“So where’s Sydney?” Kate was another friend of Lucy and Sydney’s and she had gone with Lucy to Joey’s Pizza.

“She’s at the library.”

“As always.”

“Hey!” Lucy laughed, even though it was partly true. She’d never understand how Sydney could have the willpower to work so hard on assignments and spend at least an hour everyday at the library.

“That girl…”

Lucy smiled. “Yeah, I know. It’s crazy. So anyway. What were you saying before?”

“What? Oh! Have you met Danny Hecht yet?”

Lucy thought for a moment. “I don’t think so,” she said, shaking her head.

Kate grinned. “You gotta meet him. He’s soooo cute.”

“What about Alex?” Alex and Kate were inseparable and going through the can’t-take-their-hands-off-each-other stage. Cute, but embarrassing in public.

“No, not for me!”

Lucy raised an eyebrow. “Umm… you were the one who was getting pissed at me talking forever about Matt… I don’t get it…”

Kate rolled her eyes. “Don’t think you’re so lucky… he’s perfect for Syd!”

Lucy smiled. “You found a guy for Syd?” Lucy shook her head in mock dismay. “Poor guy’s gonna get rejected before he’s said two words to her.”

Kate laughed. “No… okay so since… him…” she said uncomfortably. After Ben’s horrible betrayal, Kate and Lucy had sworn that if any guy ever so much as poked Sydney, they’d make sure he regretted it. “Look… I know she hasn’t wanted a boyfriend. And that’s totally cool. But you don’t get it, she has to love this guy. She wouldn’t be human if she didn’t. He’s got ‘Sydney’ screaming all over him. And he-”

“Whoa, whoa, whoa, wait. Calm down. She’s gonna hate him, no matter who he is.”

“Yeah, you’re probably right.” The two stared at each other for a minute or two in silence, a bit subdued at their termination of the plan.

“But I do have his number,” Kate said with a twinkle in her eye.

“One meeting wouldn’t hurt.”

“Of course not.” Kate giggled and the two started talking excitedly.

“Dad! I’m home!” Sydney swung her bag onto the ground and frowned.

“Dad?” She did a quick check of the house but he wasn’t there. But it was only 4:30; he usually came home at 6:00. She had a pretty close relationship with her father, especially since the death of her mother. She still missed her mother terribly, but knowing that her father was there for her filled her with enough happiness to move on easily from Laura, her mother’s death. Sydney had to admit that he’d done an excellent job of raising her as a single parent. Sure, there had been nannies, but most of the work was done by him and she loved him for it.

A sharp pain in her neck acted up again and she winced. She really had to stop spending so much time studying but for some reason she couldn’t tear herself away from it. Her mother had been an English professor and Sydney planned on following in her footsteps. Ever since she’d been little, she’d loved literature of all sorts and she definitely wanted to pursue her career like her mother did.

Rubbing her neck, she made her way to the kitchen to check out the fridge when her cell rang. Picking it up, she frowned at the little screen. 0476887434. She’d never seen the number before. Flipping it open, she raised it to her ear.

“Hello?” she said uncertainly.
