I'm back
ldhi: so update
-Chapter 20-
“What?” Sydney asked as she stepped next to him to look out the door. There was a pile of snow covering the entire neighborhood and almost hiding Michael’s car.
“Damn it.” Michael muttered and ran a hand through his hair.
“Could we stop cussing please? There are kids in the house.” Sydney huffed and walked back into the living room. Michael shut the door and followed her, sitting back down on the couch he was on before.
“Sorry. So… I guess I can’t go anywhere now.” Michael looked at her questioningly. She wouldn’t make him leave, would she? With her bitter attitude towards him he wouldn’t be surprised if she made him sleep outside.
“Michael…” She sighed, crossing her arms over her chest. “Sleep on the couch. You won't be able to get your car out till morning.” She avoided eye contact with him and walked up the stairs to her room. She heard him say thanks, but didn’t respond and went to bed.
Michael looked around the warm living room and saw a few pictures of the girls on the mantle. He got up and looked at them. There was one of Sydney and Kate each holding a small baby outside of their home. It must have been when they brought the girls home from the hospital. He wished he would have been there for that.
He saw another of the girls playing in the backyard. They were standing awkwardly like toddlers, each holding a stuffed animal and smiling for the camera. He smiled and moved on to the next frame.
The girls were sitting on Sydney’s lap, while she was reading to them. From the looks of it, they didn’t know they were being photographed at the time. He wished he would have been the photographer, sneaking up on his family and capturing a special moment between them.
He turned back to the couch, feeling tired from the day and laid down to sleep.

Michael was awakened by a large weight on his abdomen, and something prodding him in the shoulder. He opened his eyes briefly and found a little girl sitting on his stomach, staring at him.
“Look Danielle!” She whispered to the other girl who was poking him. When Michael looked over at the other little girl she hid behind the coffee table, clutching her teddy bear.
“Um… hello?” He mumbled quietly.
“Who you?” The girl on his chest asked, examining him closely with her green eyes. Michael smiled, seeing his daughter have his same eyes.
“I’m Michael.” He replied, assuming Sydney wouldn’t have told them about their father. Michael didn’t want to scare them either, so he figured he wouldn’t tell them that.
“Mi-cal?” She tried, sounding confused.
“Just call me Mike. If you want.” He suggested.
“’k.” She looked over at her sister, who was still hiding under the coffee table. “Danielle! Come ‘ere!” Abby called, and he watched as she poked her head out, looked at him, and hid again.
“No. Scary.” He heard her whimper.
“It’s ok, you can come out.” Michael cooed, not wanting his daughter to be afraid of him. She stuck her head out slowly and carefully came towards the couch, her lip sticking out slightly and a scared look on her face.
The girl on his chest decided to get down and Michael sat up, putting his feet over the edge of the couch and stretching his arms above his head. He saw Danielle start to whimper again and she started crying.
“Oh, sh-shoot. Don’t cry, please don’t cry.” He cooed, sitting down on the floor next to her but Danielle stepped back from him and kept crying. “Oh, Syd’s gonna kill me…” He muttered, completely confused as to how to stop the child from crying. Then he remembered there was another kid in the room and figured she might be able to help. “Hey, um… what’s your name?”
“Abby!” She answered proudly.
“Abby, well, um… how does your mommy normally get her to stop crying?” He asked, hoping the child knew what he was talking about.
“Hug?” She said, as more of a question than the answer he needed. Well, it was worth a try. Michael leaned over to Danielle and tried to give her a hug, but she dodged his arms and ran to the stairs, slowly making her way up them.
“Dang it.” He muttered, knowing it was a matter of time before Sydney came down to yell at him for making Danielle cry.
“Hug me?” Abby asked boldly, raising her arms up to him, wanting to comfort him. She must have seen the pained expression on his face and tried to be like her mother.
“Sure sweetie.” Michael opened his arms and she ran into them, snuggling up to him. It felt so good to have his daughter in his arms. He wanted to stay that way forever, but he heard footsteps from the hallway and pulled out of the embrace.
“What are you doing Michael?” Sydney asked as she came down the bottom stairs, Danielle on her hip. She must have seen him hugging Abby.
“The girls here decided to wake me up.” He replied and smiled at Abby, who grinned back then ran to Sydney’s leg.
“Abby…” Sydney scolded. “You shouldn’t have come down here without me ok?” Abby nodded and Sydney patted her on the head. “You could have hurt yourselves on the steps.”
“Sowy Mommy.” Abby hugged her mom’s leg and then scampered back towards Michael, who was now standing up. She raised her hands up to him and Michael took it as a sign that she wanted to be picked up.
“You wanna be picked up munchkin?” He asked in a babyfied tone.
“Pwease?” She asked and Michael looked up at Sydney for confirmation.
“Yeah, just help me get them some breakfast.” Sydney rolled her eyes and walked down the hall into the kitchen. Michael picked up Abby carefully, and followed into the kitchen.
“Still not a morning person I see.” Michael chuckled.
