It's Never Easy to say Goodbye

The car was parked, engine off as they waited for him to show up. Gordon Dean was a dangerous and ruthless man no one wanted to mess with. However this time, Vaughn couldn’t avoid this conflict. He was too far entangled with Prophet Five to get out now. Vaughn sat in the driver’s seat tapping his fingers against the steering wheel next to his fiancée Sydney. She had just discovered she was pregnant days before and they were both equally thrilled. They exchanged nervous glances without saying a word the whole time until the sound of tire scraping against gravel was heard. After the dust from the abrupt halt of the car had dissipated, Gordon Dean stepped out of the car along with one of his men. Vaughn’s heart rate went up as he looked over at Sydney, nodded, signaling it was time he had to deal with this and kissed her deeply like he knew he wouldn’t be coming back and got out of the car. Sydney watched helplessly as Vaughn walked over to Gordon. She had only been informed about Prophet Five a couple hours ago and from what she knew this was highly dangerous. So far, all she could see were the two men talking, and the other man Gordon had brought with him standing off to the side. She knew something wasn’t right about this whole ordeal, but she kept watching.
Her whole life took a jolting turning point as she saw Gordon’s accomplice opened the long briefcase he was holding and pulled out a deadly rifle. Her breath caught in her throat as she saw him position the rifle directly at Vaughn. The rest went by in slow motion. Each searing gun shot cracked through the air like a thunder bolt. Sydney sat there in horror as each bullet pierced the flesh of the man she loved more than breathing itself. She could feel every puncture as if she were being shot as well. Her breathing faltered the exact way Vaughn’s did. Hot tears streamed effortlessly out of her eyes as Vaughn’s knees gave out beneath him sending him to the ground. She almost felt as if she were dead herself. The man responsible for shooting Vaughn and Gordon left the scene quickly and as soon as they left Sydney bolted from the car and across the train tracks to where Vaughn lay practically lifeless. Kneeling down next to him she was able to see how bad his wounds were. Seeing him in this state made her heart jump to her throat and break slowly and painfully. She tried her best to cover up the 6 bullet holes that were streaking his white shirt with blood.
“Vaughn, baby look at me. I need you to stay with me. We can get this fixed, I promise, I-I just need you to hold on ok?” She tried frantically to get him to stay conscious. For a minute, which seemed like a split second to her he responded.
“Syd,” He said just above a whisper. “I love you…I just want you to know that I love you…and our baby.” This only made her cry harder and nod.
“I Love you too, but I need you to hang on. VAUGHN! STAY WITH ME PLEASE! VAUGHN?!?!” Her voice became increasingly distant and soon everything in his eyes went black. Sydney saw him slowly fade away and held him close still trying to hold his blood in, but it was useless. Her best friend, her lover, the father of her child was gone to this world and there was nothing she could do to save him. Sydney managed to get out her cell phone, while still holding Vaughn with her other arm and called her father. On the third ring he answered.
“Bristow.” He answered his voice harsh and emotionless.
“Daddy?” She croaked out looking down at Vaughn’s face.
“Sydney? Is everything alright? Are you crying?” His internal fatherly figure coming out.
“Everything is not ok. Vaughn he-he just died.” A fresh batch of tears added itself to the river flowing down her cheeks.
“I’ll send a team in right now.” Jack stated with concern evident in his voice. She just hung up and started rocking herself back and forth, still clinging to Vaughn for dear life. The rest of that day was a blur to her. In just a matter of seconds, her life had shattered right before her eyes, and no matter how much she wanted to, time could not be turned back.

His funeral was held a few days later. Sydney sat in the front row completely shocked she was sitting there, attending her soul mate’s funeral. The priest’s words did not reach her ears, all she could hear were those gun shots and violent images flashing through her head. After the funeral was over, his casket was carried out by Jack, Dixon, Marshall, and Weiss.

The time has come to go our separate ways
& its alright if you wanna cry
Though i know we'll meet again someday
Its never easy to say good bye

Weiss and Nadia held Sydney’s hands as they lowered Vaughn’s casket into his final resting place at the cemetery, which only forced Sydney into reality that he was really gone. She cried her heart out that day and literally had to be dragged away from his grave since it began to rain and get cold. Nadia stayed at her house that night and soothed her every time Sydney burst out into tears.

Two years later, Sydney was now a mother of a two year old named Isabelle. She was a spitting image of her father. She had Blonde hair, deep green eyes, and an adorable set of dimples. Every day Sydney looked at her daughter and saw nothing but Vaughn. She was so thankful to have her in her life as someone she could love and knew she would never be alone. She told Isabelle about Vaughn everyday and had countless pictures placed around their home. It was today Sydney decided it was time to take Isabelle to visit her father’s grave and tell her she could come here anytime she wanted, even though she might not understand now. Sydney put Isabelle in her car seat in the back of her car and got in the driver’s seat. It wasn’t long until they were at that same cemetery and all the emotions came flooding back to her. She shook her head and pushed them to the back of her mind for now and took Isabelle out of the car and held her closely on her hip. Walking up to his grave, she started to cry and this didn’t go unnoticed by her daughter.
“Momma?” she said sweetly and touched Sydney’s face.
“It’s ok baby. Let’s go see daddy.” Sydney said to the 2 year old and wiped her tears away.
“Daddy!!” Isabelle squealed when Sydney put her down in front if his grave. The only way she knew was because a picture of him had been placed against his headstone. Isabelle clumsily walked over to his picture and crouched down to kiss it. Sydney smiled and let a few tears fall, streaking her mascara.
“Yeah sweetie, that’s daddy. He loves you very much pumpkin.” She smiled at her little girl and traced the words on his headstone with her finger.
It read: Michael Vaughn
Best friend, caring father & Loving husband
Truly & deeply loved and missed.

She smiled lightly to herself with tears in her eyes as she read it over and over while holding her baby girl with one arm and felt that eventually everything would be ok like he had told her many times before.

It ain’t easy, to ever say goodbye
It ain’t easy lettin’ go of the ones you love
But believe me we'll meet again by and by
If not here somewhere up above.
