Wow. Well, that explains some stuff. It's going to be interesting what happens next. I think I have an idea, but I'm not completely sure. I love the chapter. Thanks for the PM. I can't wait for more.

oh man, i hate syd's dad!! please tell me its not jack. this is AU right, coz if his name was jack that'd totally be weird, I love spydaddy, and i can't love someone that beats up their daughter.
i love it tho, i love that michael wants to help her no matter what!

I can't believe it!
Sydney's dad is such a :<img src=:" border="0" alt="censored2.gif" /> for making her and Nadia's life hell, how can people like that exist???
Reminds me of a conversation we had about abusive people in philosophy :( . I still can't understand how someone can beat another person and pretend they I love them
I really hope Vaughn will do something to help her :(

Thx for the PM

Chapter 6
As he watched her run away, Michael was at an utter loss for words. He wanted to call out to her, bring her back and tell her everything would be alright, but he couldn’t. He had known she was a strong person, but he had no idea she was that strong. In that moment, he knew he had to help her, no matter what it took.

He went back to his car, formulating a plan the entire way. She had told him the truth, even if it was just to get him to shut up and go away, she still trusted him on some level and he was going to use that trust, build upon it and somehow save her. In addition to being persistent, he was stubborn. If he wanted something badly enough he’d get it no matter what it took. He wanted to help her…so he would.

It would have been a larger problem had she still been living with her father, but she wasn’t so that was already a giant step ahead. He wasn’t sure what other two jobs she had besides the diner in the evenings and the department store in the mornings, but no matter what they were, they couldn’t have been very high paying. He decided that the first thing she needed was a better job. He thought he recalled a job opening in his firm so he did some digging and found that there was a filing clerk position available, no experience necessary and it paid well. He decided would mention that job to Sydney the next time he saw her.

In addition to the job, she needed to get out of her apartment, if that indeed was where her father attacked her. If it wasn’t… well, really he needed to find out more about the situation and only hoped that she would be willing to share with him.

He had intended to go back to the diner the day following Sydney’s confessions, but he had been too swamped down with a case and it had been too late by the time he left work. So, he went the day after that. Walking into the diner, he saw that the front glass windows were boarded up and they hadn’t been before. Once inside, he did a double take at them. It appeared that the half-shattered glass still left in the windows was punctured by something that looked suspiciously like a bullet hole. He traced a path across the diner with his eyes, following the holes in the window across the diner to the opposite wall. His stomach dropped to his feet when he saw something that did look like a bullet hole in the wall. He gulped, walked over to Sydney and asked, “What happened?”

She shrugged casually. “Just some idiots having a shootout last night.”

“Were you here?” he asked in horror.

“No, it happened at like 2 a.m.,” she told him.

Michael sighed and shook his head. “It really isn’t safe here.”

She leaned in close to him and asked quietly, almost amused, “Then why do you keep coming back?”

He leaned towards her so that their faces were nearly touching before whispering “Isn’t it obvious?”

She stiffened and pulled back from him. “Just because I…well, it doesn’t change anything, you know,” she said sharply.

“Why not? Why can’t it?” he asked her. Her only response was to look at him and walk away. Michael grunted. He hated how stubborn she was; hated it in the way that he found it attractive, that was.

That evening, it was obvious Sydney wasn’t in any mood for discussion. She seemed tired and stressed to Michael. She kept reaching back and rubbing her shoulders or rubbing her fist across her lower back as she walked. He was glad to see that her lip scab and bruise had faded slightly, but he was disappointed he couldn’t get her to talk to him. Determined, he came up with a brilliant idea that would give her no choice and managed to actualize his plan before slipping out of the diner.

Sydney saw him leave and was actually relieved. While she was flattered by his persistence, she could really her handle her own life without any help. She walked over to his coffee cup and dumped it into the bin of empty dishes. Then, she noticed that instead of his usual five dollar bill left on the table, there were two items: a small business card and a larger piece of paper underneath it. She slowly walked over and lifted up the business card, seeing that it was his, stating his name and the address of his firm. The paper underneath it made her gasp aloud. He had left her a personal check for the amount of one thousand dollars.

She nearly growled and her eyes narrowed as she looked up towards the door he had just exited. She could have killed him. He had given her no choice but to seek him out and force him to take his pity money back and she hated him for it.

Sydney fumed the rest of the way through her shift and when she arrived home she slammed the door to their apartment. “Jeez Syd, rough day?” her sister laughed softly at her.

“You could say that,” Sydney said shortly as she went immediately to the kitchen to find the map of the city, so she could find Michael’s office building.

“What happened?” Nadia asked her.

“This guy,” she grumbled.

“The one that keeps walking you home?” her sister asked with a soft smile.

“Don’t smile like that, Nadia; he’s horrible.”

“What happened?” Nadia asked with concern. Sydney gave a nondescript grunt. “Whatever… what’s this? HOLY felgercarb!” she exclaimed as she picked up the check.

“Don’t drool Nadia, it’s going back,” Sydney said as she snatched the check away from her sister.

“Wait, wait, wait, this guy gives you a thousand dollar check as a tip and first, you call him horrible and then you take it back to him?!” her sister asked in disbelief. “You’re insane, you know that?”

“This isn’t our money, Nadia. We cannot keep it,” Sydney told her.

“But he left it for you,” Nadia said, sounding confused.

“Only to get my attention,” she grumbled.

“Okay, Syd, let’s review. He walks you home with that look in-”

“Wait, what look?” Sydney interrupted.

“That look of desire with the drooling or whatever,” Nadia told her. “Then he leaves you a thousand dollar check. I’m gonna go out on a limb here and say that he likes you.”

“He doesn’t like me,” Sydney insisted.

“Yeah, he does,” Nadia said firmly. “Besides we need this money.”

“We don’t need to be his charity case,” Sydney insisted.

“Whatever,” Nadia rolled her eyes. “But maybe you should give Captain Moneybags a try, hmm?”

“Not likely,” Sydney sighed. Nadia just shook her head and walked away.

That was definitely the wrong move Vaughn... most definitely. You should have talked to her instead of throwing money at her. You only do that at "that time of the month" and in that case it's CHOCOLATE MONEY!!! :P

Thanks for the update!!!

lol
he did the right thing. he knew that she'd want to give it back, and to do so, she now has to go to his place, get a taste of what her life 'could' be if she lets him into it. clever man.
