Dear Anna

Either the ship didn't dock or there's a picture of Michael in the paper. I think it would be great if he was either the captain or the ship's owner.

Thanks for the PM.

“Daddy!” Anna squealed and ran into his arms. She held onto him tightly, like she would never let go.

Chapter 7

“Hello?” A woman’s voice answered.

“I just want to know why.” Sydney said, knowing that the woman on the other end of the line knew what she was referring to. “Why can’t you leave us alone?”

“He’s sick, Sydney. Real sick.” The woman sighed. “He just wants to see her. He might not last much longer.” She pleaded. Sydney almost felt sorry for him. Almost.

“You know what he did to me, and you still stand by him?” Sydney said harshly.

“He’s my brother. I can’t just leave him alone to die.” She took a deep breath. “He just wants to see her for one day. Just one day. Is that too much to ask?”

“I’ll see him.” Sydney agreed, gathering her courage. She wouldn’t let Anna anywhere near that man.

“He wants to see Anna.” The woman fought.

“Well, I’ll just have to do.” Sydney hung up quickly.

“Mom, can we go to the dance?” Anna asked, coming in from being out with her ‘father’ all day. Sydney breathed a sigh of relief that she was all in one piece. Francie had come through for her.

“I don’t know. It’s getting late.” Sydney sighed, not feeling like she had the energy to deal with a dance.

“Mom, common, please?” Anna batted her eyelashes like her aunt Nadia taught her. She could get anything she wanted when she sucked up enough. Sydney reasoned that her daughter just wanted to spend as much time with her ‘father’ as possible. She was getting too attached, but Sydney hadn’t seen her happier in years.

“Fine. Let me get my coat.” Sydney stood from the table and grabbed their coats from the hanger. They walked down the stairs of their apartment building, finding the stranger waiting at the bottom. Sydney sent a nervous smile his way and he sent a confident one back.

“Ready ladies?” He asked, holding out his hand for Anna to hold as they walked. Sydney took Anna’s other hand and they headed off to the dance hall.

***

Sydney found herself having a good time at the dance. Anna was laughing and playing with her friend Claire and they all got along well with Francie and her boyfriend.

Sydney couldn’t help but stare at the handsome man she was there with. When he smiled it was like she melted into her chair. His eyes flickered in the light and were the most amazing green she had ever seen. He seemed confident in all his actions and she couldn’t help but want to kiss him. He made her feel like something she hadn’t been in a long time; a woman.

A slow song came on and all the couples paired off, slowly swaying to the music. Anna came running over to her ‘father’s side, whispering something in his ear and pleading with him. Sydney wondered what she was up to, but soon found out when he turned and asked her to dance.

“I don’t dance.” Sydney admitted. She didn’t want to make the situation any more awkward. He would be gone by morning and she could go on with her life. They didn’t have to pretend to be close. That wasn’t part of the deal.

“It’ll be fun.” He promised, taking her hand in his and standing up from his chair. She felt a chill run down her spine at his touch and followed him dumbly out onto the dance floor. She placed her hands nervously on his shoulders, it having been a long time since she last danced with anyone. He set his lightly on her hips, swaying to the music.

“I hope Anna’s not giving you too much trouble.” Sydney said, looking up into his eyes and getting lost in the brilliant emerald.

“None at all. It’s fun, actually.” He assured, smiling at her and making her knees go weak. She knew he probably felt her fall slightly, and blushed. She looked out at their table and saw Francie sitting there grinning. She looked so smug that they were dancing and getting along. Sydney shook her head and continued to talk quietly with him until the dance finished.

“We should probably be getting home, it’s way past her bedtime.” She commented, taking Anna’s hand and leading them out of the hall. The stranger followed, walking with them back to their apartment. When they reached the door, Anna whispered something in his ear. He smiled and told her she would have to ask her mother.

“Mommy, since he doesn’t have to leave till Monday can we hang out tomorrow?”

Anna is going to have a hard time saying goodbye to her 'father' when he leaves and I believe, so will Sydney.

Also, I don't blame Sydney for not wanting to take Anna to see her real father. That would be too confusing, plus, I'm sure he'd make sure Anna knew who he was- totally screwing up Sydney's story.

Thanks for the PM.
