I might just be totally oblivious, but how was the Covenant ended, by killing Lauren?? Because S5 focused on Gordan Dean and Peyton,but S4 had Elaina but not much bad activity, so did it end at the end of S3?
They never official explained it, but they did say Elena was the leader of the Covenant, so technicaly it ended at the end of Season 4, even though for most of that series it wasn't an issue.
