I think Shane would be a better survivalist as he is tougher and seemed to know more about living in a zombie infested world.

As for best leader i think Rick is the best leader because he does what is for the good of the group not just what he thinks is best.

He's a survivalist alright :P And by that I mean only he will survive because he'll leave you for dead in a heart beat haha.

I've always seen Rick as the better leader because he looks out for the group. Shane was obsessed with Lori and Carl and that's all he cared about, and he was willing to put anyone in danger to prove he was better. His decisions were fuelled by emotions and put a lot of people in danger.

This.

I always thought Shane was the better leader throughout series 2 as Rick used to take too long making decisions and then back out (when he was going to shoot that guy in the barn) but since he killed Shane he's really turned things around and now my favourite character along with Axel and the late T-Dog

I agree Rick probably took too long, but Shane made them on a toss of a dime and that didn't help either. Like the walkers in the barn - instead of blasting the doors open and exposing about a dozen of people to a barn full of walkers (some without guns) they could have gone up into the loft and picked them off one by one with Daryl's bows. Save their ammo, and reduce the risk of walkers hearing.

Shane was an awesome villain though.

I've always kinda liked Shane, for some of the reasons already mentioned. And I honestly don't think he would lead the group to their death. Most (if not all) of the moments where he snapped were because the rest of the group did not agree with him (since they were not prepared to do whatever it took to survive).

Rick was indeed slow at making decisions. And I certainly don't see the point in all the ethics and "doing what's right" stuff. "The world ended, didn't you get the memo?" - Amy. Rick is definitely a much better leader now (and I'm not unhappy with him), but if Shane had prevailed as the leader, who knows where the group could be by know.

I still think if Shane was leading the way and Rick wasn't around, half of them would be lost by now xD I don't think he'd have any problems cutting the "baggage" loose (Hershel; older, and would surely ditch since he has to use crutches, Beth; generally pretty useless, Carol; again..., The baby; zombie magnet with screaming and crying? etc) and I doubt he'd risk his life to save anyone other than Lori and Carl... and even then, who knows xD

There a difference between a tough guy and a leader, sure Shane is pretty helpful but surely not reliable. Rick's the reason why they made it so far, Shane might have saved Lori though.

But Rick did the right thing, he gave the guy a chance to change. Shane was to much of a macho man to value that and would have killed Rick.
