Season 4 Maybe Irina's not dead

[Both the spoken dialogue and the Closed Captioning said that the Russians were looking for Elena.

And the Russian who Jack met with asked if he had heard from Irena lately. That questions had nothing to do with the Elena stuff. But it does leave the possiblity for Irena to come back. Because Irena was burried in a public place in Moscow, so if she was dead - the Russian's would know it and they would know that Jack knew it(seeing that Sydney is the one buried her). So if she is dead, why ask the questions?

If she is dead, he would ask the questions to gauge Jack's reactions. He may be trying to see whether Jack was involved in killing Irina. If Irina was involved in an unfinished operation that Jack might have Intel for, he may be probing for a lead. If Jack is uninvolved, going after him only gives Jack an opening into an operation that he need not know exists. If Jack already is involved in the operation and killed Irina, going after him might give the Russians information that they need. Make sense?

So Irina can be dead and his questions still make sense--even if he knows she's dead. ;)

I reckon Irina will be dead until the writers manage to convince Lena Olin to return and be properly killed off, at which point they'll write a way out of the current state of affairs.

Whether it will hang together is another question!...

I agree. Alexei was fishing for information as he was chatting with Jack. And Jack was studying Alexei for clues in return.

I liked how Alexei complained that he was supposed to receive all of Irina's books, but Jack told him that the book in the bag was the one that he really wanted. Alexei looked so surprised.
