I'm disappointed that the article doesn't make any reference to Star Trek IV: Voyage Home.

But on a serious not, I don't think what the article calls a "conversation" could really be described as such since the scientists were just playing back pre-recorded whale sounds with no understanding of what the sounds mean. It'd be like me playing on my phone an audio clip of a dog barking and my dog responding by coming over to me and barking, or making other sounds, in response to the audio clip.
