Chapter 13

Vaughn

Damn her. Damn her to hell.

Sydney Bristow had never been a predictable woman, but there was always something I could count on with her. When we fought, we fought with everything we had, ugly screaming matches that left both of us practically in tears.

As I drove my car home on the virtually empty highway I was so mad I could notice my hands shaking.

“How could she say those things?” I asked myself out loud. “After all I’ve been through. I gorram buried her.”

But a little voice at the back of my head answered me, “You’re being selfish. Think about all she went through. She was captured and held in a prison cell for six years. Then she comes back to find the man she had been dating married with a daughter.”

“Shut up.” I said.

I came quietly into the kitchen, but instead of going up to bed, I opened the liquor cabinet.

After Sydney died, I drank heavily, but when I met Lauren, I stopped and hadn’t had a drink since.

But tonight I opened the cabinet and took out a bottle of whiskey. I took out a glass, and filled it to the top with the bitter stuff. But, then again, I wasn’t drinking it for the taste. I held the glass up to my lips, then walked to the sink and poured it down the drain. Then again, then again.

By seven, when Maggie got up, it was Lauren’s day off and she was sleeping late, I was almost through the entire bottle, but I hadn’t taken a single sip.

“Daddy?” she asked, and I jumped. “What are you doing?”

I looked at the almost empty bottle, then the little girl in the frilly pink nightgown,

“Thinking.” I said honestly.

She wrinkled up her nose, “Are you drunk?”

“What? No! What makes you say that?”

“Mom said you were a worthless drunk.”

“What? Maggie, when did she say that?”

“I heard her say it on the phone.”

I sighed, “Please don’t tell me anything else like that. And I’m not drunk.”

“I didn’t think so. Can you make pancakes for breakfast?”

Sydney

The doctor Eric and were sent to investigate was a dead end. Someone had gotten there first, the doctors was dead and all his documents were shredded. While we were down there we met with Nadia’s superiors, who still hadn’t seen her and didn’t seem to like us. So we came home.

I began to get my life settled again. I bought a home, right next to Eric as it were.

Eric and I had a lot of fun picking out furniture and wallpaper for my new house. I had fun picking out new clothes. I was so glad that Eric was my friend, with Vaughn married, Will in Witness Protection and Francie dead, he was my only one.

Not to say that he wasn’t very annoying. When a pipe in my bathroom was hissing, Eric decided to fix it himself and ended up breaking the pipe and flooding my house. So, for a couple of days I was back on Eric’s couch, since I no longer had a functioning bathroom.

Eric and I had ordered Chinese food my first night there, and now we were sitting on his couch pouring over every detail of Nadia’s folder in hopes that it would lead to a clue. Eric’s doorbell rang, and he got up.

I listened as he opened the door and sucked in air, “Mike, hey buddy.”

Vaughn! S**t! I looked around, wondering if I should run and hide in Eric’s guest bedroom. But it was too late as Eric brought Vaughn in, and he looked about the way I felt when he saw me.

“Hello.”

Okay, he was going for polite, I could do polite, “Hi.”

“I thought Eric said that you moved into your new house.”

“I did. But I had a hissing pipe and Mr. Home Improvement decided fix it himself and ended up bursting it.”

“Hey!” Eric protested, and Vaughn and I both laughed.

Eric offered Vaughn a beer and took out another one for himself and me. We sat there, mostly talking about Nadia’s case. Then after about forty-five minutes, Eric jumped up.

“S**t! I forgot to turn that report into Jack. Man he’s going to kill me.” He looked at his watch, “I have half an hour. I’m going to run, you guys hang here.”

“Eric, no I’ll-” both Vaughn and I began, but Eric, rat that he was, slipped out the door.

Vaughn and I sat back down on the couch, and an awkward silence fell between us.

I took a deep breath, “I’m sorry I yelled at you. I shouldn’t have said the things I did. It was out of line.”

“Syd…Sydney, that’s okay. You have every right to be upset.”

The silence descend on us again, heavy and uncomfortable.

He placed his hand on mine, used his other to lift up my chin, forced me to look at him, “Syd, I don’t want you to think that I gave up on you. It almost killed me when you died. I loved…love you.”

We looked at each other for a long moment, then, without thinking, I leaned over and kissed him. It started softly at first, then grew more passionate.

Suddenly Vaughn broke apart, “S**t!” he exclaimed, “Lauren!” He stepped back from the couch, “I’m sorry, I have to go.”

“Vaughn,” I cried.

He looked back for a moment, when he was almost out the door, “I loved you Syd. But I’m married.”

Then he left.

“Stupid! Stupid!” I yelled at myself. “Throw yourself at him like a wh**e. And expect him to what? Stay with you? Give up his wife and daughter? Stupid!”

Then my anger consumed itself and I burst into tears.

I know it is another uhappy ending, but trust me, things have to get worse before they can get better.

Forget the cow...she's no good...
Im telling you...just forget her...
