Chapter 29
Before they knew it Thanksgiving had arrived, their relatives were on their way and Sydney and Vaughn weren’t prepared at all. Hannah was keeping them busy during the hours she was awake and when she was asleep they barely had enough energy to do anything but sleep themselves.
The day before Thanksgiving Vaughn’s mother arrived and it was her first time seeing Hannah since she had been born almost two weeks before.
“Hey Mom.” Vaughn greeted his mother with a kiss on the cheek and a smile.
“Michael you look tired.” Amelia sighed. “And oh! Sydney you poor dear you look exhausted.”
“I know.” Sydney sighed weakly as she hugged her mother-in-law.
“Is she giving you that much trouble?” Amelia asked in a concerned, motherly tone.
“No... not exactly... it’s just all very new.” Sydney sighed.
“Of course.” Amelia nodded. “So where is she?”
Almost as if it was on cue, Hannah’s cries began emanating from the baby monitor in Sydney’s hand. Sydney laughed weakly and ushered Amelia up the stairs towards Hannah’s room. Sydney took a step towards the crib but Amelia said, “Let me.” And then she stepped over to the crib. “Ohh she is just so precious.” Amelia sighed as she lifted up her crying granddaughter and kissed her forehead.
Sydney sighed and leaned back into Vaughn’s arms when he wrapped them around her waist.
“Why are you crying Hannah hmm?” Amelia said in a baby-fied tone as she rocked the baby gently.
“She wants fed.” Sydney sighed.
“Are you nursing or using formula?” Amelia asked.
“We had to switch to formula... long story.” Sydney shook her head.
“I’ll do it.” Amelia told them.
“Are you sure because-”
“I’m sure.” Amelia cut Sydney off with a smile. “Go take a nap, both of you.”
“Thank you so much.” Sydney sighed with tears of relief in her eyes. Amelia just smiled and nodded and waved them away.

“Hey.” Sydney sighed as she rolled over and saw Vaughn smiling at her.
“You’re so beautiful when you sleep, you know?” He smiled at her.
She giggled and smiled. “How long were you watching me?” He shrugged. “How long have we been here?”
“Bout an hour and a half.” He yawned.
“Ohh we should get up.” She sighed as she tried to slide out of bed but Vaughn held her back.
“Nooo stay.” He sighed.
“Vaughn we have to get Hannah. Besides its not like we can do anything if we stay here.”
“Right.” He groaned as he made a disgusted face. “Best if we get up then.”
“Yes.” Sydney laughed. They went downstairs and found Amelia fussing over Hannah.
“Ohh you guys she’s perfect.” Amelia smiled.
“Thanks.” They both smiled.
“Oh and look who showed up while you were sleeping.” Amelia said as she gestured towards the kitchen.
“Dad hi!” Sydney smiled as she saw her father come out of their kitchen with a bottle of water.
“Hello sweetheart.” Jack smiled.
“Ohh you guys, I’m glad you’re here but... we don’t have any food. I mean we have food but we have no Thanksgiving food. With Hannah and everything... I wasn’t able to... and I ruined our first Thanksgiving...” Sydney said as she broke down into tears.
“Syd it’s ok.” Vaughn said as he pulled her into a hug. She cried into his chest as Vaughn cast weary glances at his mother and father-in-law.
“No. I ruined it. Hannah is going to hate me.” She sobbed.
“No she won’t.” Jack told her.
“Sydney, honey, Hannah won’t even remember.” Amelia told her. “Besides its not ruined. We’re all here together right? And I can go out and get turkey or something.”
“No you’re a guest.” Sydney said.
“It’s fine really, I want to.” Amelia said.
“You sure?” Sydney sniffed as she looked over at Amelia. Amelia smiled and nodded. “Thank you.”
“It’s no problem at all. Really.” She smiled.

After a rather tearful Thanksgiving where Sydney cried because ‘it was so beautiful to have family together’ and Hannah cried because...well they weren’t sure why, Amelia and Jack left Maryland with the promise to return if their help was needed. Vaughn managed to have a rather subdued birthday celebration since Sydney was too exhausted to plan a major blowout.
The Monday after Thanksgiving Vaughn went into the office prepared with his ‘quitting’ speech. He and Sydney had discussed it and he was going to be a stay at home dad. He was terrified out of his mind to do it but he loved Hannah so much he definitely wanted to try. Besides, Sydney wasn’t going back to school until January so he had another full month to get used to it before she left.
“So?” Sydney asked excitedly when Vaughn got home.
“I’m no longer an employee of the Central Intelligence Agency.” He smiled.
“Yay.” She grinned. “This is so exciting! Right? This is exciting right?”
“Very exciting.” Vaughn smiled as he kissed her softly.
