The Sci-Fi Channel created a new series that is a "re-imagination" of the original Battlestar Galactica. While the themes & characters are similar, consider this a parallel universe of the original series.
In 2001 Tom Desanto & Bryan Singer started production on a new BSG series. Both Dirk Benedict & Herbert Jefferson were attached to the project. A clash between fans, the studio, and scheduling conflicts eventually led to the project's cancellation.
Buoyed by the success of Richard Hatch's revival attempts Glen Larson (creator of the original series) and Todd Moyer went to work on a BSG movie. The Galactica would've found earth where one of the original battlestars would be found, the Atlantis.
Richard Hatch (Apollo) attempted to personally revive BSG by financing & producing a trailer video. Second Coming was envisioned as a direct continuation of the original series with many of the same characters.
In 1980 ABC attempted to revive the Battlestar Galactica franchise. While only six episodes aired the "The Return of Starbuck" is constantly listed as fan favorite. Often you can find the episodes edited together as a movie with the same name.
