Alias Reruns on TNT

NEW YORK (Variety) --- TNT has bought the cable rights to reruns of the action series "Alias" for a minimum of $20 million.

Distributor Buena Vista TV will deliver at least 88 episodes to TNT, which will be able to start running "Alias" up to 10 times a week beginning in the fall of 2005.

TNT may end up sharing "Alias" with TV stations during its run because Buena Vista has reserved the right to sell it in syndication for weekend play while TNT schedules it Monday through Friday.

The series, which stars Jennifer Garner (news), has never racked up big ratings for ABC on Sunday nights --- it averages a relatively modest 8.2 million total viewers, down about 15% from last year --- but the series pulls in enough adults 18-49 to make it highly salable on Madison Avenue.

Thanks to its lineup of off-network hours such as "Law & Order," "Charmed," "Angel," "ER" and "The X-Files" --- to be bolstered this fall by a weekly play of the hit CBS series "Without a Trace" --- TNT has vaulted to No. 1 among all cable networks in total viewers, adults 18-49 and adults 25-54.

thats good news ... at least we'll be able to watch re-runs for a while ... starting next year ... can't wait ... ;)

TNT Bags 'Alias' Syndication Rights
(Tuesday, March 02 09:05 AM)

LOS ANGELES (Zap2it.com) - Sydney Bristow will be taking her spy skills to TNT next year.

The cable network has secured syndication rights to ABC's "Alias" for the relatively low sum of about $200,000 per episode, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The show will join TNT's weekday lineup of acquired drama series, which includes "Law & Order," "NYPD Blue" and "Angel," in the fall of 2005.

Buena Vista Television Distribution, ABC's syndication arm, had been asking for up to $1 million when it first put "Alias" on the market last year. The lower fee is due largely to the fact that while the series has a fiercely loyal audience, it's not a very big audience. It's averaging about 8.2 million viewers a week this season.

The convoluted plots on "Alias," which centers on CIA agent Sydney Bristow (Jennifer Garner), were also seen as a factor driving down the per-episode fee. Series with self-contained episodes, such as "Law & Order" or "Without a Trace," another recent TNT acquisition, generally bring higher prices.

One potential plus for TNT is that some viewers might be seeing "Alias" for the first time in syndication, which could help boost its numbers.
