Christopher Eccleston has landed a new role in a new US telefantasy pilot for HBO called The Leftovers(not sure about the title – any show that immediately makes you think of a plate full of uneaten cabbage is going to face an uphill struggle).

Carrie Coon, Ann Dowd (Compliance), Amanda Warren (The Closer) and Justin Theroux have also been cast in the pilot, which is going to be directed by Peter Berg (Battleship) from a script by Damon Lindelof (Prometheus, Lost) and Tom Perrotta, based on Perrotta’s 2011 book.
According to Deadline, the story is set after Rapture… and centes on the people who didn’t make the cut and are left behind in a very different world (presumably left with only Simon Cowell shows to watch on TV).

Eccleston will play Matt Jamison, former Reverend and current editor of his self-published tabloid. Coon will play Nora Durst, a wife and mother who is suddenly neither. Dowd will play Patti Levin, leader of the local chapter of the Guilty Remnant, an organisation that is somewhere between a cult and a movement. Warren plays Lucy Warburton, a take-no-prisoners mayor. Theroux plays the chief of police.

    Sounds...............terrible!

Sounds like something that's already been done. Left Behind (2001)

There are a series of books about it that were turned into a few movies with Kirk Cameron.
