Someday You Will Be Loved

Daniel Hecht pushed open the door of his old, beat up Cadillac with a huff, cold air immediately filling his unexpecting lungs. A shiver ran up his spine as he pulled the winter jacket tighter around him and hastily made his way to the door.

The parking lot had been deserted, much like the isles of the grocery store, except for the few poor souls stuck in the same boat as him. Laggardly, basking in the heated warmth the store offered, Daniel went to the shelf cases of boxed stuffing.

“Nobody goes grocery shopping on Thanksgiving,” he grunted, looking between the different brands.

His girlfriend of now four months, Gwen, had informed him only minutes before she started preparing dinner that they were out of stuffing. There for, demanded Daniel go out and buy some, because everyone knows Thanksgiving just isn’t right without the stuffing for the turkey. Reluctantly, he had to oblige.

So now here he stood, spending his supposed to be peaceful afternoon scanning shelves of the grocery store, because he hadn’t listened to what Gwen had said when telling him what brand. All Daniel knew was that they usually got the ‘blue box’, and today, it seemed there were at least a dozen boxes of stuffing residing in the same colored box.

After what seemed like an eternity of staring at bright blue cardboard boxes all holding the exact same thing, he got fed up and just grabbed the first thing his hand could reach. Huffing and mumbling a few choice words under his breath, Daniel made his way to the cash register.

Rounding the corner to the check out Daniel’s heart skipped a beat and he blinked his eyes shut hard, praying the image in front of him was only a mirage.

There are certain people we try to forget every day, and others that we want to store permanently within our minds, for Daniel Hecht, Sydney Bristow was neither of the above. She was just there.

They’d grown up together, right down the street from one another. Had the same friends, went to the same school all their lives. They were inseparable; never seen apart. They’d never been more than friends, or tried any of the ‘no strings’ type of thing. To each other they were simply the kind of person everyone needs – a best friend.

I once knew a girl in the years of my youth
With eyes like the summer of beauty and truth

Eight months, that’s how long it’d been since he’d seen her shining face; eight months where he wished that everything the two of them had would just become a childhood fantasy. The past however, is impossible to dispose of, no matter how hard you try.

All those months ago she’d come to him crying in the middle of the night, pounding on his door until he woke up. The tears had stained her cheeks as fresh ones came into her eyes and he did what he always did, he was there for her.

“He was lying to me,” Sydney choked out between sobs. “Noah cheated on me, and he didn’t even have the decency to tell me! I had to catch him in our bed with her!”

“Shh.” The circles that were being rubbed soothingly on her back didn’t seem to be doing any good. Her heart was shattering, and this time he couldn’t even help her pick up the pieces. “Try to get some sleep.”

“Danny, I don’t want to sleep,” she told him, bringing her bloodshot eyes up to meet his.

“You really should.” He tried to explain, kissing her forehead gently. “Maybe it’ll make you feel better.”

Sydney shook her head side to side lightly, never moving her stare. “Danny…”

“Get some sleep Syd.” He smoothed down her hair and then moved to get up, but her outstretched arms prevented him.

She swallowed hard, letting silent tears glide down her cheeks before bringing her lips up to touch his softly. Pulling back she stared into his eyes, the lamp on his desk being the only source of light, and making them seem dark. Sydney went to kiss him again, but was greeted with his chin as Danny turned his head.

“What’s wrong?” She asked, staring up at him yet again. “Am I really that repulsive?”

“Syd… no, God, no.” His head shook quickly, he stared up at the ceiling than back down at the floor; anything to avoid her.

“Then what is it?” Her hands wandered to the bottom of the white shirt he’d been sleeping in, playing with the hem of it.

“You’re going to stoop to his level if you do this,” Danny choked out, finally gathering the courage to look her in the eye.

“Good,” Sydney whispered, before quickly slipping the shirt over his head.

“This isn’t right,” he told her quietly, trying to ignore the kisses she was leaving down his chest.

She hovered overtop of him, staring right into his eyes. “I love you Danny,” Sydney confessed. In reply he kissed her hard, hungrily, refusing to listen to her words. Refusing to lie to her.

The next morning he’d awaken before she did, and slowly slipped out the door. Daniel had no intentions of ever looking back, but he cared too much. Scribbling sloppily on a piece of paper he laid a note on his pillow. No explanation, simply one line -

But in the morning I fled; left a note and it read -

“Someday you will be loved.”

To say he left things with Sydney on bad terms would be quite an understatement. He never answered any of her calls, returned any of her messages, or responded to any of her emails. Daniel Hecht simply faded away, trying to let the life with her in it slip away too.

It didn’t hurt when he thought of her; it didn’t eat at him constantly that what the two of them had down was wrong. Daniel put faith in the fact that Sydney was a strong person and she’d gotten herself in and out of much worse situations. He knew her well enough to know that eventually, she’d be alright.

I can not pretend that I felt any regret
‘Cause each broken heart will eventually mend
As the blood runs red down the needle and thread
Someday you will be loved

For Sydney the days had faded into weeks, and slowly turned into months since the last time she saw her best friend. He’d abandoned her, like so many other people had; her mother, her father, past boyfriends. Danny was all she ever really needed in life. Now, he too, was gone.

Some days she’d wake up feeling like none of it ever happened, and it was all just a horrible nightmare. Other mornings Sydney would be too crushed to even get out of bed. Those were the days when it hurt the most, her heart with a constant ache, a piece of it missing.

You’ll be loved, you’ll be loved
Like you never have known
And the memories of me will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved

Daniel always told her that he’d never leave, that the world wasn’t meant to have them apart. Some days it felt right, and some it felt wrong. Slowly slipping out of existence and leaving Sydney to fend for herself in the horrible world. He wouldn’t have done it though, if he didn’t believe she wasn’t capable of handling it on her own.

He’d always been able to see in her what no one else could - the sensitive heart that lay beneath her cold attitude. Danny was able to see beyond what she wanted him too, occasionally scaring her senseless. On good days, letting her face be graced with a smile, seeing that he truly cared.

Constantly, he was the one she’d run too when things became too hard to handle. Sydney only craving the comfort that he could provide. What she really needed though was the one thing he had that no one else even came close to possessing – belief in her, in what she could do.

You may feel alone when you’re falling asleep
And every time tears roll down your cheeks
But I know your heart belongs to someone you’ve yet to meet
And someday you will be loved

Standing there, staring at her, it was like he was thrown back in time. Sydney Bristow was the last person he expected to see, and part of him didn’t even want to see her. Half his mind told him to turn around and walk out the door. Forget everything he came out of the house to do, ignore the cold air, and drive home. Leave her in the past, where she was meant to be.

He wanted to make sure though, that she really was alright. That she was capable of making it on her own, he needed the assurance that what he did was okay.

You’ll be loved, you’ll be loved
Like you never have known
And the memories of me will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved

Taking a step towards her, a tall blonde man with eyes so green he could see them at this distance, came over and wrapped his arms around Sydney’s waist. Daniel watched her laugh, the smile only he used to be rewarded with now being given to a stranger. The man kissed her neck lightly, his arms still secure around her middle.

You’ll be loved, you’ll be loved
Like you never have known
And the memories of me will seem more like bad dreams
Just a series of blurs like I never occurred
Someday you will be loved

Looking the couple up and down, he finally realized what that smile was. The love it held, her heart sitting on the corner of her lips. He abandoned the box of stuffing on a random shelf, and shot one last look at the couple.

Danny smiled softly, then turned and walked away.

You’ll be loved.

Thanks for taking the time to read this, hope you liked it!

And Sam – This piece of fiction was like… miniscule compared to how amazing you are, but I hope it brought a smile to your face.

I’m going to steal the PM list to TTWH… so, that’ll be why you got a PM.

That was so good! I loved that it was in Danny's POV. I'm glad that Syd finally found happiness and someone to love her. Vaughn is just that kind of man.

Excellent one parter! Wish there was more!

HUn, that was really good!

Was getting a bit worried about when our green eyed, tall, sandy blonde haired friend would make an appearence, lol but he did ^_^

Awesome

Well i love all your one parters so no surprize there.
Danny's feelings for syd were so well written that you were just...drawn in with him.

That was really good! I like how it is from Danny's perspective, and even though S/V weren't really focused on, you can just see how much they love each other just from an outsider's view ^_^. Well done!

Makes you feel sad for Danny.
He had to leave his friend, Sydney.
She was strong and was able to move on and find her soul-mate.
Danny needs to find his soul-mate. He obviously hasn't fount it, yet.

great job Ash,

I'm glad that Sydney found her soulmate in Vaughn. Danny had to let her go...wish I'm sure it wasn't easy thing to do, but seeing her happy now should tell him that he made the right decision.

Thanks for the pm and looking forward to your next story

Great one parter. Its good to see Syd and Vaughn from a point of view of someone who once loved her.

Thanks for the pm.

ASH!

Loved this. I could have sworn you've turned to the dark side (because no one reads A/Ns) and were writing a Syd/Danny fic, even though you asked me about Danny and his assness before. I'm glad you didn't use Noah. I may have had to go and hurl if he comforted Syd... again.

Anyways, I'm glad I read this, even though I'm pretty sure this wasn't the one you were poking me to read... but STILL! Despite the grossness of the Syd/Danny stuff. I LOVED IT!

Mmm.. that made it all better (y)

Thanks for the PM!
