Chapter 26
“Syd you have to come with me PLEASE!” Nadia begged her over the phone one evening.
“Nadia I don’t want to. Mom and Dad are just going to stare at me like I’m a huge disappointment”
“No they won’t. Besides they specifically asked me to get you to come.”
“Really?”
“Yeah. Maybe they want to give you your birthday present.”
“Nadia my birthday isn’t for another week yet.”
“Yeah, so? Are you complaining about an early present?”
“No.... Ok I’ll come. But I’m blaming you if they yell at me.”
“Fine... I’ll see you at 6:30”

When Sydney arrived at her parent’s house she was very nervous. She hadn’t spoken to them at all since they found out about her secret. And that was over 2 months ago. She hadn’t bothered to call them but then again they didn’t call her either.
“Hello Sydney.” Her dad said casually as he opened the door.
“Hi.” Sydney said going inside and taking off her coat. “Where’s Nadia?”
“Didn’t she tell you? She’s not coming tonight.”
Great, she tricked me, Sydney thought. “Oh,” she mumbled.
“We’re really glad you came Sydney.” Her mother said sitting down on the sofa with her. “We’ve wanted to talk to you.”
“Yeah well it’s not like you called....” Sydney said.
“Sydney we’re very sorry about the way we reacted when you told us.” Her mother began shakily.
“It was just such a shock.” Her father added.
“Yeah I know, it shocked me too.”
“Sydney why didn’t you come to us when it happened?”
“Well isn’t it obvious? I was afraid you’d act exactly the way you did. Like I was the biggest disappointment in your lives.”
“Oh Sydney that isn’t true!”
“Yeah well that’s what it feels like.”
“No! Sydney that’s not true. We are very proud of the way you handled things but we just wish you would have told us.”
“Well I just couldn’t ok? You have no idea what its like to be absolutely terrified out of your mind and you don’t know what to do about it or how to fix it. That’s what it felt like....” Sydney said, tears beginning to stream down her face.
Her mother pulled her into a tight embrace, tears beginning to fall from her own eyes. “Sydney I’m so sorry you had to go through all that alone. I’m so sorry.”
Jack came over and joined his family in the hug.
“We’re sorry we reacted the way we did. Can you ever forgive us?” He asked his daughter.
“Of course I can.” Sydney sniffed.
“Do you want to tell us more about it?” Her mother asked.
“No, I’m sorry... I just can’t yet.”
“That’s ok dear. You can tell us when you’re ready.”
But the more time that past, Sydney wasn’t sure if she could ever tell anyone.
