Chapter 15

The next week was agonizing for Sydney. For starters, it was the first week back after vacation, which automatically made it worse than any normal week. On top of that, one teacher announced they’d be having a test the next class-time, meaning she had less than forty-eight hours to learn weeks and weeks worth of material. Finally, to make everything worse, there was the fact that she hardly had time to talk to Michael over instant messenger, let alone see him in person since he was equally as busy. She quickly learned how spoiled she had been to spend practically every day with him. All that time together had been wonderful and it made her miss him all the more when they were forced to spend a week apart.

Finally, on Friday evening, Michael weathered the long trek to Sydney’s dorm room from his own in the pouring rain, but, to him, it was worth it to see her. Sydney stood outside her dorm room practically from the moment Michael called her and told her he was on his way over. Twenty minutes later, she saw him approaching from the stairwell and ran to greet him. She jumped up in his arms and he hugged her tightly as she squealed happily.

“I really missed you,” she said before kissing him sweetly.

“Mm, I missed you too,” he sighed. Just as he said this, they could hear Jess making a gagging noise from the doorway of her dorm room. Michael turned to her with an annoyed expression. “Go away, Brat,” he told her. Jess let out a pouty ‘hmph’ before slamming her door shut.

“Yeah, that’s going to make her like us again,” Sydney said with a slight eye roll. Michael shrugged and walked with Sydney, who was still clinging to him, into her dorm room before kicking the door shut with his foot.

“Roommate gone?” he asked, noting the room was empty aside from them.

Sydney nodded. “She went to some frat party and told me she’d see me tomorrow so we’re all alone.

“Excellent,” Michael smiled before dropping Sydney down onto her bed. Before he could do anything else, though, Sydney lifted up her foot and put it squarely in the middle of his chest, keeping them separated.

“Slow down there, Mister. Just what exactly were you planning on doing?” she asked, her tone obviously playful.

“For starters,” he said, looking down at the foot on his chest, “removing your gross disgusting foot.”

She gasped in offense. “My foot is neither gross nor disgusting.”

“Uh, yeah, it is – all feet are,” he explained.

“OH no,” she sighed, removing her foot and tucking it underneath her. “You don’t have a thing with feet, do you?”

“If by ‘thing’ you mean hating them, yes, yes I do,” he told her with a slight shiver.

“Whyyy?”

“Because they’re gross,” he said. She rolled her eyes at them. “THEY ARE!”

“Not if you wash them,” she explained. He shrugged and sat down on the bed beside her. He wrapped his arms around her and she swung her legs over his lap so that they were cuddling as much as possible. “I really missed you this week… it totally sucked.”

“Tell me about it,” he groaned. “Seriously, I’m beginning to wonder why I ever was brain damaged enough to minor in philosophy.”

“Because it teaches you different way of thinking which will help you in law school when they shove egg beaters in your brain and confuse the living hell out of you so you question whether or not something is actually red or whether we just think it’s red,” she said.

Michael looked down at her in shock. She had said nearly word for word his explanation for taking philosophy classes, yet he was convinced she had never actually heard his explanation. “Where the hell’d you hear that?!” he asked, shocked.

She laughed softly. “From you, Goofball. I heard you explain it to your mother when she asked if she should take you to a doctor to have your head examined.”

“Oh, right,” he laughed softly. “Well, now I’m beginning to think I should have my head examined. It’s killing me,” he moaned.

“Aww,” Sydney sighed sympathetically. She lifted her head and kissed his jaw gently. “How many classes do you have left to finish out your minor?”

“The one I have now is the last,” he said.

Sydney laughed. “Michael, you’re almost done! You’re over halfway done with your last philosophy class ever. You can make it, I promise you.”

“Nooo I can’t,” he whined.

“Yes you can,” she insisted. “How are you gonna make it through law school?!”

“I’m not… I’m gonna quit and work at Wal-mart,” he said so seriously that Sydney snorted with laughter.

“You’re awful,” she shook her head at his immense grin.

“Yeah, but you love me anyway,” he said.

“Yeah, I do,” she giggled before kissing him. That kiss sparked the longest make-out session yet between them and, once they’d had enough of each other’s lips, Sydney settled back down with her head on his shoulder and his fingers tracing light circles on her wrist.

“You know,” he sighed. “I really hope I’m not catching my roommate’s cold…,” Michael said just as casually as ever.

Sydney raised her head, gaping at him, completely infuriated. “You tell me that now after we just exchanged saliva for fifteen minutes?!” she asked, horrified.

This caused him to burst out laughing. “I was kidding! That was so- HEY!” he moaned when Sydney smashed him in the face with her panda bear, causing a loud ‘thwack’.

“You are such a jerk,” she muttered, sliding off the bed and walking away. A moment later she felt his arms wrapping around her waist from behind her.

“I’m sorry,” he said softly in her ear. “I have a sick sense of humor; you have to get used to it.”

“Uh huh…”

“I’ll make it up to you,” he enticed.

She turned around asking, “Foot massage?” He gave her an unappreciative look that made her giggle. “That was fun.”

“Oh yes, a blast,” he rolled his eyes. She giggled once more. “How about if I massage something else… like your shoulders?”

“Yeah, like I’m gonna turn that down,” she said before climbing up on her bed, her face to the wall, and pointing over her shoulder, indicating for Michael to massage. He slid up behind her and rubbed her shoulders and upper back until his hands couldn’t massage any longer, which was fine, because at that point, Sydney was nearly asleep. “So good… do it every night,” she moaned.

“Ha, no, sorry. My hand would break,” he laughed.

“Nah, you’d build up a tolerance,” she told him with a smile.

He rolled his eyes. “Anyway, I guess I should be going since I gotta take a bus and all…”

“Noo, stay… I mean, stay, please?” she smiled.

“Okay… but I’m really not sure how any one ever shared these teeny tiny beds,” he sighed as he slipped off his shoes and jeans.

“Me neither…but I guess we’ll find out,” Sydney smiled.
