Chapter 20

After a seemingly endless last week of classes and a grueling finals week, school had finally come to a close for that semester. Luckily, Sydney’s shoulder was almost completely healed by that time. She no longer had to wear the sling on her arm and, while she still had difficulty raising her arm above her head, she was ninety percent back to normal day-to-day functioning with it.

Luckily for Sydney, she had a two-week vacation before her job as a lifeguard began for the summer. The pool she where she worked didn’t open until the first of June, meaning she had two weeks with absolutely nothing to do, which was a nice wind-down from the stress that finals brought on. Unfortunately, the Vaughn siblings weren’t as lucky. Jess only had a three day break before her job at the mall and Michael only had five days before his job as a research assistant at a law office began.

On the day before Michael’s job was to begin, Sydney and Michael were enjoying their last bit of freedom with an all day hang out session at the Vaughn house. Of course, ‘hang out session’ quickly morphed into ‘make out session’. By the time the movie they were supposed to be watching was over, they were fully engrossed in each other’s lips. Michael slowly began trailing his kisses down from Sydney’s lips and onto her neck, which elicited an uncontrollable amount of giggles from her to the point where tears were actually forming in her eyes.

“Wow, um… okay…,” he said slowly, not sure of what else to say.

“Sorry! It’s just… you were kissing my neck and I was all ‘AH! Michael’s kissing my neck!’ and my neck is ticklish and…sorry,” she managed in between attempts to calm her laughter.

“I see…,” he said slowly, obviously slightly offended.

“No, no, no… it’s not you,” Sydney assured him, touching his shoulder lightly. “It was just… I dunno, it was the first time I was like ‘oh my god, Jess’s brother is licking me!’”

“I was not licking you,” he defended.

“I know, I know, I’m sorry,” she sighed. Then she leaned over and pressed a gentle kiss onto the side of his neck before repeating, “I’m sorry.”

“I suppose I can forgive you,” he sighed casually. She rolled her eyes slightly before they continued with their kissing activities.

Unfortunately, after only a few more minutes, Jess arrived home from her job and, upon seeing her brother and friend completely engrossed in each other, she made a loud, choking gagging noise. “God, can’t you two get a room or something. This is the couch!”

“Oh puh-leeze, spare me,” Michael rolled his eyes. “I do believe it was you and, which flavor of the month was it? Mr. February who were mauling each other on this couch shirtless. My vision has never recovered by the way.” Jess gave a proud sniff before heading up the stairs to her room.

“I guess we should stop kissing now,” Sydney sighed as she turned so that she was sitting properly on the couch instead of sideways and half in Michael’s lap. “’snot like we haven’t been doing it all afternoon.”

“You complaining?” Michael asked with a grin. She shook her head with a laugh. “Good, I didn’t think so.”

~*~

Within a week, Sydney had settled into her typical busy summer routine of assisting with swimming lessons in the mornings and then life guarding until four in the afternoon. She loved her life guarding job, though on some of the ninety degree plus one hundred percent humidity days, her job was much harder to love. Since she had been doing it ever since her senior year in high school, she was used to sitting and baking in the sun during the hottest hours of the day. She still tried to switch her schedule around and lifeguard in the evenings occasionally, just to get a break from the constant beating sun.

One day during the second week in June, she was taking a break under the pool snack shops’ large overhang when she felt someone walk up behind her. She didn’t even have to turn around to figure out who it was; she knew the moment the person spoke. “Excuse me, miss, but I was wondering what would happen if a person were to say… fake drowning to be rescued by someone as beautiful as yourself?”

Sydney turned around with a massive grin to find Michael, shirtless in navy blue board shorts, with his arms folded over his chest looking ultra sexy with a huge grin. “Well, we have strict policy against fake drowning, but I might make an exception for you,” she told him.

“Really? Would I get mouth-to-mouth?” he asked in a low voice with an evil grin.

Sydney leaned in and whispered close to his face, “Maybe later tonight.”

He gave her a slightly shocked look for a moment and then relaxed his face as he said, “Or now.” He went to kiss her but she moved away and he ended up kissing her chin.

“Michael, stop,” she giggled. “What are you doin’ here?”

“Day off,” he sighed. “I came to get some sun and stare at the really hot lifeguards all day.”

“Hot lifeguards?” she asked, putting emphasis on the plural. “Well, I’m sure Joe over there will be glad to hear he has your affections,” Sydney said, gesturing towards the only other life guard on duty at the small pool. Joe was flexing his muscles for a group of swooning girls as they drooled over his bleach blonde hair and toned body. Though, in Sydney’s opinion, Joe had spent a bit more too much time in the sun and it had done some permanent damage to his brain power.

“Ha-ha,” Michael said dryly. “Not funny.”

“Yes it was,” she grinned. “Anyway, my break is over so I gotta get back to my post. Please don’t fake drowning the water’s too cold to jump in.”

“I’ll try to restrain myself,” he sighed in a tone that made it seem as though she was asking him to do the most difficult thing in the world. She rolled her eyes and walked away from him, shaking her head.

Jess is seriously dragging this on for too long. Get over it. That was sweet of Michael to go visit Syd when he got a day off. I wouldn't mind having to save him from drowning.
Great update
