Well, she does have a point. It's nearly impossible to have a relationship that way. However, by breaking up she's saying 'you can't be with me, it's too complicated, go be with other people' and if he starts seeing somebody else before she does... well, she's going to be devastated.

Sydney's decision is really going to backfire. Not only is it going to hurt both of them but it'll hurt her more. I'm betting Michael meets someone and starts dating again. Sydney, meanwhile, will be alone and regretting what she did.

Someone needs to knock some sense into Sydney. We all knew Sydney was going to do that.

Maybe Jess will finally do something nice and unselfish and talk some sense into Sydney. Then she will need to find a way to get Sydney and Michael back together.

There are about 14 chapters left. I'm worried about how many chapters this will take to get them back together.

Alright :S I really didn't see that coming! And somehow, I don't really see Sydney and Vaughn apart working either. Hopefully Sydney'll get some sense and realise she's in the wrong. Oh! And might I say this now - Jess is a champion  She's definetly something

Chapter 37

When Sydney arrived home, tears were already slipping down her cheeks, but she held herself together enough to do one last thing before breaking down. “Daddy,” Sydney said softly as she stood at the edge of his study. “If Michael calls or comes over will you please tell him that I’m not here and I don’t want to see or talk to him?”

Jack grunted and looked over to her briefly, but when he caught sight of her tears he did a double take. “Did you two have a fight?”

Sydney shook her head. “We b-broke up,” she managed with a slight sniff.

“What?! Did he break up with you?!” her father asked as he stood, his overprotective father stance shining through.

Again, Sydney shook her head. “No… it’s… complicated. Thanks Dad,” she managed before racing up the stairs. Once in the bathroom, she shed her clothes quickly and stepped into a steaming hot shower where she could let all her tears flow out without fear of unwanted interruptions.

In the next three days, Sydney received no less than three voice mail messages from Michael each day. She listened to none of them; she deleted them as soon as she received them. She also discovered via her father that Michael had stopped by once, but she wasn’t there when he did; she was working. Sydney had also informed her colleagues at work that if Michael showed up they were to tell him she wasn’t there and stop him from entering the pool at all costs.

On the fourth day after their breakup, Sydney received three messages, but only one was from Michael. The other two were from Jess, but she deleted all three of them without listening, figuring that Jess’s messages would be similar to Michael’s. On the fifth day she didn’t receive any calls from Michael, nor did she on the sixth. Finally, after a week had passed she was convinced Michael had finally given up and for that she was sad, but glad.

On Saturday, a week after the breakup, Sydney was lying in her bed hugging her stuffed bear and absentmindedly leafing through the newest People magazine like she’d been doing for the previous week. In that time she’d only moved from her bed when she went to work, which seemed to ironically be her saving grace (ironic because of how much she usually complained about it). If she was not at work though, she was in bed. Laying there that morning, she heard footsteps coming up the stairs that were notably not her fathers due to the fact that they were very quiet and her father usually stomped up the stairs like he was having a contest to see how loud he could possibly be. As soon as Sydney heard the sigh emanating from her doorway, she knew exactly who her guest was.

“Sydney Bristow you are a stupid, stupid girl,” Jess said.

“Go away, Jessica,” Sydney grunted.

“Look at this,” Jess said with disgust as she entered her friend’s room. Normally, Sydney’s room was very tidy, aside from the occasional bit of laundry on the floor. That day, however, it was a train wreck. It was obvious Sydney hadn’t picked up one item of clothing she’d worn that entire week; they were all lying in a pile at the foot of her bed. On top of that, her desk and end tables were littered with used dishes and empty cartons of Oreos. Plus the entire room was peppered with used, crumpled tissues. “Your room is a sty and you are pathetic,” Jess told her.

“Oh good, you came to cheer me up!” Sydney said in a fake tone, still not looking away from her magazine.

“Hey,” Jess said, snatching the magazine out from under her friends nose and bopping her on the head with it, “You idiot – listen to me.”

“Whaaaaat?” Sydney groaned, sitting up slowly.

“What the hell’s the matter with you?!!” Jess demanded.

“What?”

“You broke up with my brother!!! Why the hell’d you do a stupid thing like that?”

“Wha’d Michael tell you?” Sydney asked casually. She didn’t feel like retelling the story if Michael had already.

“Nothing. He barely stopped crying long enough to tell us that you dumped him you evil, evil bitch,” Jess muttered, sitting on the end of her friend’s bed.

Sydney swallowed hard. “He was crying?”

“Well, not exactly,” Jess sighed. “I mean, he wasn’t in tears or anything – but I’ve never seen him look so sad…not even when his puppy died.”

“When did Michael have a puppy?!” Sydney asked, never recalling him mentioning a puppy or any sort of pet for that matter.

“Umm… I think he was like eight or nine. He and Dad went to some fair and this lady was selling puppies from a bag. Michael pestered Dad and he broke, so Michael chose this little tiny puppy who was the runt of the litter. Anyway, they brought the little guy home and of course Mom was pissed but the puppy wouldn’t eat so they took him to the vet and he died because he was sick or somethin’…. Michael never mentions it,” Jess sighed.

“Oh…”

“So why’d ya do it?” jess asked. Sydney shrugged. “Oh, yeah that’s a reason.”

“It’s complicated,” Sydney told her.

Jess snorted. “Complicated, my ass. All I know’s that you’re sitting here in this muck sobbing and he’s on our couch in his boxers making an ass print on the sofa since he hasn’t moved in a week. You’re both miserable, so why don’t you come home with me, kiss him, make up and then go back to being happy.”

“I told you, it’s-”

“Yeah whatever,” Jess rolled her eyes. “You’re scared; just admit it.”

“SCARED?!” Sydney barked in a disbelieving tone. “I am not scared.”

“Um, yeah, you are – commitment-phobic too,” Jess told her.

“Oh, yes, you’re right, I am commitment-phobic. That’s the exact reason why I was in a relationship with Michael for almost a year and a half,” Sydney said with a dramatic eye roll.

“Not that kind of commitment-phobic, Syd. I’m talking ‘bout the long run here. You either don’t want to marry Michael or you’re scared to or something,” Jess told her.

“That’s not it.”

“Then what is?!”

Sydney sighed. “It’s just… Michael’s been my only real long-term relationship. We’ve known each other since we were kids and… well, what if we’re not supposed to be together? What if there’s someone else out there better for me than Michael and I can’t meet him because I’m with Michael? What if-”

“What if you’re on crack?!” Jess interjected.

Sydney gave her an unappreciative look. “Besides that, it’s like I told Michael – long distance relationships are hard and he doesn’t need the stress of us on top of the stress of school.”

“Oh, that’s just some bull felgercarb line you fed him. The truth is you’re scared,” Jess told her.

“I just told you that-”

“Yeah, yeah, I freakin’ heard what you said. But here’s the thing – what if my brother is the one person you’re meant to be with?” Jess asked her with a raised eyebrow. Sydney looked away, refusing to answer.

“Fine, whatever,” Jess sighed in a helpless tone. “Far be it from me to know what’s best for the two people I love most in this world. All I know is this – I’ve seen a lot of people in relationships. I’ve seen a lot of people go through many different relationships and I’ve seen them happy, sad, and frustrated in those relationships. But you wanna know the one that stood out in my mind as the one I hoped to have one day? It was yours. I know I gave you two alotta felgercarb for your relationship, but it’s only because he’s my brother and you’re like my sister. Just… know that it was yours.”

Sydney looked over at Jess slowly and saw that she had an almost sad smile across her face. “Ah well, I’ll leave you to your moping,” Jess sighed, sliding off her friend’s bed. She walked towards the door but paused and turned around halfway there. “Oh, by the way, if you ignore another one of my voicemail messages I’m going to have to kill you.”

Sydney couldn’t help but crack a small smile at this, “Thanks, Jess.”

GO JESS!!!! Finally you can see the loving human that is Jess...lol...that was a great chap...i hope that Sydney listens to what Jess told her and that she gets back together with Michael

*kicks Syd in the backside* GO, ya dummy!

Argh! I have to, yet again, get out another hard hat! *grumbles* Man, I just hope the next chapter isn't 'FIVE YEARS LATER' kinda deal.

Wonderful, wonderful job! I love it!

See?! Jess is an absolute champ! Good on her for showing Sydney the light! :D What a legend!

Jess is absolutely correct! Sydney is scared...so scared she makes up lame reasons to break up. If Michael is committed to make their long-distance relationship work, so should she.
