There is adult science fiction and there is kiddie science fiction. My observation is that the main target audience for sci-fi series and movies is the teen years {say 13-20} - But if it is really good science fiction it maintains its interest to all ages, even old sci-fi addicts like me.
I liked most Star Trek movies and all of the series except Deep Space Nine {considered to be the most successful ?!}. Three times I've gone back to watching the series on Netflix and again I stopped. Do you really expect an adult to believe that a major space station would allow a gambling casino, entertainment complex, to be run by a seedy and corrupt alien? - Beyond belief! and the second rate stories, action {or lack of it} is just too much - I can't get through the series. Someone who has please tell me if it gets better in the last few seasons and maybe the I will give it another try.
Now I just started watching Starhunter {renamed Starhunter 2300 in season two}{It ran from 2000-2004 but there is only a total of two seanson}. I had hesitated to watch it becuase I read somewhere that the last episode of season two ends on a cliffhanger but when I did some more research I read that rights to the series have been obtained and it is scheduled for a reboot.
The main problem I'm having with Starhunter is even though it is interesting, serious and adult sci-fi for the most part they have as one of the main co-stars a teenage niece of the captain who too often acts {as part of the story} as an irresponsible teenager,
would an irresponsible teenager often be put in responsible positions on a space ship transporting dangerous alien criminals? - Almost as ridiculous as a seedy alien Ferengie operating a casino on a major space station. Still Starhunter is basically good quality and I will probably continue watching it - even though it may have been mainly directed at the teenge audience - It is well done.
