(Retinal scanning display projects image on retina )
The retinal scanning display irradiates the retina with low-intensity light. The user sees the afterimage of the light scanned on the retina; to put it another way, the retinal scanning display projects the image upon the user's retina.
The first time I read about this idea was in an sf novel many years ago. Frederik Pohl and Cyril Kornbluth wrote about this idea more than half a century ago in their satiric 1952 novel The Space Merchants.
