‘Star Trek’ Plans New Series With Patrick Stewart’s Jean-Luc Picard – Rolling Stone

Star Trek producers revealed Saturday that Patrick Stewart will reprise the role of Star Trek: The Next Generation captain Jean-Luc Picard on the franchise’s new series.
The actor is also set to serve as executive producer on the series, which will air – like Star Trek Discovery – on CBS’ video-on-demand service All Access beginning in the fall of 2019.
Stewart portrayed the fan-beloved Picard during Star Trek: The Next Generation‘s original television run from 1987 to 1994; the series’ crew also starred in four feature films, with Picard last appearing in 2002’s Star Trek: Nemesis.

My main question is;
Do we really need yet another Star Trek internet series?

I agree, there are a lot of science fiction stories to tell but is the Star Trek universe really the only way to tell them?
Are the writers so lazy they have to exploit Star Trek to be able to have a science fiction background?
Why not create something new and unique?
Why not borrow from some of the other thousands of science fiction television series?
Where are the ones based on Space 1999, Firefly, Babylon 5?

Patrick Stewart is a versitile actor. I'm sure he could bring other science fiction to life fairly easily.

Who says he needs to be bald?

My guess is that they think they can bank on the fan base of Star Trek to bring in ratings...or in this case, subscriber $$$ for their on-demand arm.

Would be interesting to see what sort of audience numbers they have for the newer ST series installments, compared to the newer, unique sci-fi series that I've watched in the past several years...namely, shows like Defiance (which was canceled), The Expanse (which is moving to Amazon), and Killjoys (still ongoing).

I watched the first season of Discovery.
While it was weird/different it was watchable.
The reboot-alternate Universe Star Trek movies are okay,
Thing is, the 'Federation' utopian setting seems old and busted to me.

What I would like to see is a Science Fiction series that stands on its own but includes Star Trek Universe interplay.

Like The Expanse that finds a Federation derelict ship. Granted, The Expanse probably wouldn't work but the cross-over idea is mainly what I'm referring to.
Perhaps The Orville could explore such a concept?

Imagine how The Orville/Star Trek merge would play out.
Sorta like a straight man/comic man routine.
The Orville and a Star Trek ship team up for a season against a common foe.
Then, if the Star Trek element is a hit, make a spin-off series on it.
