In a surprising announcement, Paramount+ has cancelled the animated Star Trek: Prodigy series and will be removing it from the streaming platform as a tax write-off. This come after season 2, which was renewed back in 2021, of the animated series is finishing production and is nearly ready. CBS Studios, which products the series under the Nickelodeon branding, has said that they'll be shopping the series to other networks. That, of course, gets tricky when it comes to the various Trek licensing arrangements between the various vestiges of CBS and Paramount.

Other networks, like HBO Max and Disney, have been on cost cutting streaks lately but I find it surprising that Paramount+ is cutting a Star Trek series since they have been pushing the Trek franchise as a signature brand. Even though Prodigy is aimed at kids, a much younger demographic than the other Trek shows & movies, some elements of Prodigy have found their way into other Trek works.

No date has been announced when it will be removed from the Paramount+ platform but it is expected to happen within the next few weeks as the merger of Paramount+ and Showtime streaming approaches. If you haven't watched it already, now's the time while you can.

... and Netflix is the new home for it. S1 will be available in 2023 and S2 will be available in 2024.
