~Part 3~

The soft roar of the ventilation system that had once kept him awake, now lulled him to sleep every night when the lights would be turned off in his cell. Every night was the same, he’d sleep until six in the morning until the lights were turned back on and a guard entered his cell to escort him to the showering area.

The days went slow, and they were more than painful when you didn’t have anything to do but think and remember past memories. He’d find himself remembering his childhood, when his father was still around. He’d remember the first time he met Sydney, and the silent glances they’d share at work or in the warehouse. He also tried to occupy his time with memories from his past relationship with her. Wondering if things had been different if they would have already quit APO and move somewhere far away with their first child already on the way.

All he had was an imagination. The moment he spilled what he knew about Arvin Sloane he’d be sent off to federal prison for life. He knew they would break him eventually, but he needed all the time he could to possibly convince them that he wasn’t as bad as people thought.

It was ten o’clock and he laid down in his cot, waiting for the lights to be turned off before he closed his eyes and drifted off. But minutes went by and he soon began to wonder if the guard on shift had forgotten what time it was.

He got up from his uncomfortable metal cot and walked over to the large glass window.

“Hello?” He asked. “Anyone out there?”

The hallway was empty, like it usually was. But he soon saw a shadows on the floor and heard heels clicking on the marble tiles. A moment later Sydney Bristow and two federal marshals stepped out from around the corner and started to walk towards his cell.

“Oh shi*.” He said under his breath. He took a few steps away from the glass and stood in the middle of the room as the door to his cell opened. The three visitors walked inside and stopped near the door.

Vaughn didn’t speak, but rather waited to be spoken too.

“You’re being moved to a more secure location. You’re no longer safe within the walls of APO.” Sydney told him.

“How come?” He asked.

“I’ll explain that later.” She said. She nodded to the marshals and they stepped towards Vaughn. Vaughn took a step back unsure of the situation. The marshals stopped for a moment, not knowing if the prisoner was going to struggle.

Sydney walked up to one of them and took the handcuffs and ankle cuffs from him. She walked closer to Vaughn and stopped with about a foot between them.

“Give me your hands.” She requested.

He stared at her for a moment, but didn’t deny her. He raised his wrists up and held them close together as she secured the cuffs before she moved down to his ankles. He stood still as she finished the job and stood up.

“Let’s go.” She said as she took him by the arm and led him out of the cell. One marshal walked in front and one in back of Sydney and Vaughn. He was led out to a black suburban in the parking garage and was secured in the backseat before the driver took off. A small convoy escorted them through the city.

“Are you going to tell me what’s going on?” He asked. Sydney had been silent from beside him.

“There’s a mole inside APO that knows where Sloane is. But whoever it is knows that you also know, they don’t want that information leaking out.” She told him.

They fell into silence again for a few minutes before Vaughn found the will to speak.

“It was true.” He said. “I was ordered to take your life. But that was a long time ago. A time before I actually knew you. I’d never…”

“We’re here, Agent Bristow.” The driver said as he pulled into a driveway of a small safe house outside of the city.

“Thank you, inform my father that we’ve arrived.” Sydney said before the driver got out and opened the back door. They could only be opened from the outside.

Sydney jumped out and Vaughn slid across the seat so he could get out. The marshals that had escorted them were now inside giving the house a final check before coming and standing outside the front door. Sydney took Vaughn’s arm again and led him inside of the small, one-story home.

“The house is secure, there are five different teams scattered around the property.” An agent said.

“Alright.” Sydney said. “I’ll take it from here.”

The agents left and Sydney locked the front door behind them. Vaughn stood frozen in his place, his cuffs still taking away his ability to move much.

Sydney turned back to him after a moment and walked closer to him. She took out a key from her pocket.

“Let us get something straight. I’m supposed to release you from these restraints, but I am. If you try anything, I swear to god I’ll kill you.” She told him seriously as she looked into his eyes.

“Define anything.” He said as his eyes traveled around her face and fell onto her lips.

She looked down and began to free him from the restraints she had previously put on him. Once she had them off she walked over to the kitchen table and set them on the surface. She took off her jacket and threw it over the back of one of the chairs.

Vaughn’s eyes fell upon her right arm where he saw a long scar from her shoulder half-way to her elbow.

“How long were you in the hospital after I left?” He asked.

“Three months.” She said. “I was in a coma for one of them.” She glared back at him before walking over to the kitchen counter where her laptop was set up. She began typing, her eyes on the screen and on her fingers as she typed.

“I didn’t want to leave you.” He said softly. “They came and got me.”

“It doesn’t really matter now.”

“It does to me.” He said. “You have no idea…”

“I think I do.” She said. “I trusted you, you screwed me over. It’s not that hard to understand.”

“That’s not fair.” He said.

She looked up at him with angry eyes. “Where do you get off deciding what’s fair?” She asked. “You’re no better than Sloane himself, infact you’re worse. Instead of having someone else kill your target, you do it yourself.”

“I did it myself. That was before I knew who Sloane really was. He suspected you as a double agent even before you were one. And that was because your father was a double agent. He gave me the assignment to kill you. And it was two days previous to that when I found out that SD-6 wasn’t a part of the CIA. I turned him down, told him I retired. So he sent another agent to do it.” He said.

“Shepard.” Sydney said.

“He was supposed to kill Danny and wait for you to come home. But he went crazy in the process.”

“I don’t care if people believe what Sloane set me up to be. But the fact that you can believe that I would ever consider hurting you makes me absolutely sick.” He said. “There were plenty of times when I could have done it, but I never did, I never thought about it. And because the f***ing CIA believes Sloane more than me, I’m in jail for the rest of my life for supposedly conspiring to kill the woman that I love.”

“I was brought to the CIA in order to do the opposite of what Sloane wanted me to do. I was supposed to protect you. And the only person that knows about that is your father. Given the current situation it seems that his views of me haven’t changed much. He never thought I was good enough for you. And maybe he’s right, but it doesn’t mean he has to ruin the rest our lives in the process.” He sat down on the living room couch and ran his hand over his face. He was silent for a moment before he eyed the couch.

“This is a nice couch.” He commented. He heard a soft chuckle behind him and he turned his head to see her smiling softly. He stared at her as she kept looking at her computer screen. The smile stayed on her lips. It was something he hadn’t seen in nearly a year.

“Do you have a boyfriend?” He asked.

Sydney’s head shot up at his awkward question. She tried to open her mouth but nothing came out.

“I take that as a yes.”

“No.” She said. “I mean…there’s this new guy…never mind…I can’t talk to you about this.” She said as she tried to get back to what she was doing.

Vaughn got up from the couch and slowly walked into the kitchen. He stood a few feet away from her and she glanced at him out of the corner of her eye.

“You’re the only thing that’s kept me sane.” He told her.

She swallowed hard and looked down. “Don’t do this.”

“No matter how long I’m behind bars, it’s not going to change the fact that I love you.” He moved closer to her and she backed away slightly. She bumped into the corner where the counters joined.

“I warned you not to try anything.” She said as she set her hand on her gun.

He stopped for a moment. He looked at the gun and then back at her.

“You want to shoot me then shoot me.” He told her as he moved closer again. She brought the gun up to his chest and warned him.

“Stop.” She said. Her hand was shaking slightly. He put his hand on the gun and c***ed it for her. “If you want me to stop, then stop me.”

They stood there for a moment, Sydney’s gun the only thing between them. She stared at him for a few more moments before unc***ing the hammer of her gun and setting it on the counter.

He knew this was his chance. If he didn’t do something he’d never get out of CIA custody. He needed to catch Sloane in order to clear his name, he needed to bring him in so the CIA would trust him again.

Sydney looked up at him. Her eyes traveling around his face as tears formed.

“I love you.” He shook his head. “I’m sorry.” He told her softly. He grabbed her gun from the counter and quickly stepped back as he raised it up at her. He could see the shock and betrayal enter her eyes, followed by the anger.

It was easy to tell when Sydney Bristow was pissed off, she’d clench her jaw and purse her lips and give you the evil Bristow stare.

“You son of a b****.” She said bitterly.

He regretted doing this to her, he knew that things would never be the same between them.

“Give me your cell phone.” He told her. She just stood there. “Sydney, I’m not going to ask again.” He said as he c***ed the gun.

Sydney gave him an utterly disgusted look as she took out her cell phone from her pocket and threw it to him. It hit his chest and he caught it. He moved to the sink and turned on the water, filling the sink up he threw her phone into the water, rendering it unusable.

There were no regular phones in the house, due to the risk of enemies possibly tracing the calls.

“My love for you was never a lie.” He told her. “When I lost you, part of me died, I’ll never get that back. There are things I regret in my past, but I can’t change them. If I let Sloane get away this time, he’ll never be brought to justice.”

“I’m going to kill you.”

“Not tonight. Because I’m the only person who can end the nightmare you’ve lived with for over four years.” He told her. He smiled slightly at her and popped the clip of bullets out of the gun. But he left one in the chamber. “I’ll make sure he knows that this bullet is from you.” He engaged the thumb safety and stuffed the gun in the back of his pants. He gave her a slight nod before he ran out of the house.

“Vaughn!” He could hear her following him as he exited the house through the backyard. He careful moved from bush to bush. He could hear her footsteps behind him in the grass as she chased after him. “I swear to god if you don’t stop I’ll shoot you.” She said.

He kept running. He cut through a yard that led him onto one of the dark side streets. He could feel her closing in on him, and a second later he was hurled into metal light poll. He quickly braced himself before it could do any damage to his body. Sydney jerked him around and punched him in the face, sending him to the ground.

“You don’t f***ing pull my own gun on me!” She straddled him and began punching him repeatedly in the face. He saw anger in her eyes, and he knew she wasn’t after him to stop him, but rather, she needed to do beat the felgercarb out of him to make herself feel better.

So instead of trying to stop her he put his arms above his head on the concrete ground and let her take out her frustration. When he gave up his defenses is when she stopped. She grabbed fistfuls of his shirt, his chest hair twisting between her fingers.

“You done?” He asked as he turned his head to the side and spit out blood. He turned and looked back at her, she slapped him across the face before getting off of him and brushing herself off.

He pushed himself to his feet and touched his bruised cheek. “I forgot how hard you hit.”

“Want me to refresh your memory again?” She asked.

He sighed and wiped the blood from the corner of his mouth.

“Syd…”

“Just go.” She looked down. He stared at her for a moment. “GO…before I change my mind.”

He shook his head and walked closer to her. He placed a kiss on her forehead, which she didn’t respond too. “Do you want him dead or alive?” He asked her.

She looked up into his eyes. “If you know me so well then you should be able to figure that out.”

He was silent for a moment before he nodded softly. “Two hours. Just give me a two hour head start.”

“I’ll be waiting for your call.” She told him. She walked away from him, headed back the way they had come. He stood in the darkness as he watched her figure disappear.

“I love you.”

Another amazing chapter from another amazing writer.
The tension that you wrote between the two of them was just....wow. I don't think that anyone could have done it better. It was perfect...and the way that you brought the characters to life and you didn't make them do a thing out of character...it's simply perfect.
Wonderful job, Kristina.

 your 🐒,
Riley xoxo
