One of the things that truly impacted me as a child was Jim Henson and the marvels that his mind crafted in The Muppets and Sesame Street.
I cannot imagine what my childhood would have been like if Henson hadn't given us Elmo, Big Bird, Ernie and Oscar! I also like Fraggle Rock and The Dark Crystal although I only discovered them in my late teens.
It is my hope that the upcoming Disney Muppets movie will serve as a way of introducing the children of today to the wonders of yesterday as many of the stuff for children and young adults today is outright mindless. I can't stand Spongebob Squarepants, The Black Eyed Peas, Lady Gaga, Suite Life of Zack and Cody, The Problem Solverz, Kids Bop, The Naked Animals, Miley Cyrus (Hannah Montana) and of the other trash that is out there.
Unlike most of the things today that are just stupid, weird and corrupting the things that people like Jim Henson gave us were of value and substance! In personas like Kermit The Frog, Miss Piggy, Elmo and Count Von Count Henson weaved to children and adults alike timeless tales and stories that transcended age and taught valuable life lessons in a quirky and innocent way which made learning fun and entertaining. Today we only have a few things that are as ingenious as Henson's creations but there are a few that catch on like Adventure Time and Dora The Explorer. I hope that we can return to the better stuff of yesteryear.
