*Chapter 4: Gay or Straight*
*Previously*
“Whoa man!” the guys complain, until they catch a glimpse of the beauty before us and shut up, looking at her.
“Wow” is about all Eric can muster, which is beyond what the rest of us can articulate. She looks behind her, quickly breaking my gaze as she looks back as if to see if anyone is there. She turns back, and quickly asks with fear in her voice debating what she is about to do.
“Can you guys give me a ride?” she asks, her voice full of doubt and laced with fear at our refusal or possibly our acceptance.
“I am going to kill you, when I get my hands on you. You stupid b****” an angry voice yelled out from the dense bush at the side of the road. The girl broke our gaze fearfully looking back to where the voice had come from terrified.
“Get in!” she looked back at me smiling thankfully and letting out a breath she had been holding since she heard the voice. Running down the other side of the car to the back where James and Daniel where in a state of shock or possibly awe, they moved over to give her room to get in. The mysterious beauty climbs into the car, not bothering to open the door, but somehow managing to quickly, gracefully and without flashing any of the four teenage boys constantly gaping at her, getting into the car and sitting down. The second she sits down she looks directly at me and smiles thankfully, I can’t help but smile at her back looking in to her eyes. Wow! Craig honks on the from behind us snapping us both back to reality. He leans out his window and yells.
“Hey. Stop picking up girls and let’s get going. The games not going to wait for us.” We all start to relax, just as a guy older than us pushes his way out of the bushes at the side of the road a complete mess and steaming with rage. The girl takes one look at him she just turns back at me and says.
“Go! Please” the desperation in her voice is all I need to make me put my foot down. She’s terrified.
*Present*
Out of the corner of my eye, I could see her completely relax into the seat and close her eyes as we sped away from the man. The light makeup on her eyes was mainly black fading to green at the edges. She looked gorgeous. As she relaxes, the other guys around me take the chance to take a good look at her, checking her out and not bothering to make it discrete. I notice she has a mobile phone clutched in her dirty hand. As she leans back she uses her hand to push her hair away from her shoulder and leans her head away from us exposing her long neck. ‘Syd always used to do that’ glancing in her direction. As I turn my eyes back to the road I am about to ask her if she’s alright when James beats me to the punch.
“Are you ok?” he asks her in a concerned voice, and leaning closer to her. ‘Hey! Hands off buddy’ ‘oh my god I don’t even know her and I am jealous of my friend making sure she is alright.’ ‘I am so pathetic its official.’ The strange girl opens her eyes smiling reassuringly and looking James in the eye sighing in relief to exaggerate her answer.
“I am fine. Thank you so much.” She looks around all the guys. I might be imagining it. Wishful thinking, or whatever, but she looks a little longer at me, and her smile seems to actually reach her big brown eyes. Our gaze does not break until I am forced to look back to the road quickly. I quickly glance back at her and she is looking over her shoulder as if to make sure the guy isn’t there. I have to keep my eyes on the road now as we pull off the freeway onto the winding road of LA. Still, I can’t help but try to watch her in my peripheral vision as I drive; I wish I hadn’t jumped into the driver’s seat. Weiss likes to drive my car, but then he would have been goofing around and probably not have been able to break in time. God I don’t what to even think about what would have happened.
“Can we take you somewhere?” She looked at James a little scared at his statement, wrong wording man. “Um… I mean …your home, a friends place maybe?” The girl relaxed a bit and then said:
“Oh my friends are all at a party at Millburn Avenue. Are you going anywhere near there?” She asked politely yet still a little hesitant. Hey that’s my road. Yep! My mental age has returned to preschool. Great!
“Yeah that’s my road, are you staying with some friends? I haven’t seen you around before.”
“Kind of, there was an accident at my boarding school so my dad sent me to live with one of his friends and his family for a while”
“Boarding school, Hein, all girls?” Weiss pipes up looking back at her again suggestively. She just smiles at him and nods she doesn’t really look it but she is kind of uncomfortable about it.
“God Eric, is that all you think about?” I ask him, trying to get him to look away from her and in an attempt to ease her. I look back at her with a small smile and she returns it innocently. It works and she relaxes again. Weiss simply sits back down and answers simply.
“Of course. I’m a guy!” He states, as if it’s obvious. He shrugs his shoulders. All I can do is look back at the road shaking my head slightly smiling at my strange friend and the fact that she smiled at me again. Then John turns the conversation to the previous topic.
“I’m sorry about him. I wish I could say it’s not like him, but that would be a lie.” He says smiling sweetly at her ‘my God have they all turned into hormone driven automatons.’
“What kind of accident?” Daniel continues.
“Oh- um someone brought a gun in and one of the cooks got killed.”
“Wow!”
“Who brought in a gun, one of the students?” Daniel asked giving the girl his rapped attention.
“No. Just some guy. I never saw him before.” She said diverting her eyes out onto the highway.
“They caught him?” Daniel never can get enough of this stuff ‘the good guys always win.’ His dad and granddad are both cops. It seems to run in the family.
“No he got away.” She said. She seemed a little upset. I don’t know why, there was something in her eyes.
“How long are you staying in LA for?” I ask trying to change the subject. She instantly seemed relived but not enough for the other guys to notice.
“I don’t actually know.” She answered, biting her lip and looking a little nervous.
“Need some locals to show you around?” James asked smiling at her charmingly. ‘He’s hitting on her. Fair play, she is gorgeous, but she has just been chased by some guy. The last thing she needs is him hitting on her.’ She smiles sweetly at him and replies politely.
“If you don’t mind, but I have to warn you that some of my friends from school are here too, so we’re treating it as a shopping holiday. So you can show us around but you would probably be bored.”
“Well I can’t really say we know the best places to shop, but we could always show you some of the night life around here. If you want us to that is”
“Of course. I’d like that. Not tonight though.” She says quickly. I am so relived. Maybe I can talk to her for a little bit.
“No not tonight. Tonight is game night.” James said smiling at her wider than when she smiled back, and quickly nodded once in agreement.
“Kings vs. Red Sox. Home game.” She says, looking down at her watch while talking, then looking back at James and continuing with slight worry in her voice.
“We better get there soon, the Game is starting in five minuets.” We all turn our heads to her in a state of shock ‘she likes hockey my God. Wow! She’s the perfect girl!’ She seems surprised by all our looks of astonishment.
“You like hockey?’ I ask, forced to turn back to the road. ‘God please say yes please say yes’ is the mantra going through my head as she smiles at me and simply replies.
“Of course I like hockey. Please don’t say you guys don’t?” She says, looking at us as shocked as we are.
“Duh of course we like hockey, we’re guys!” Weiss says, beaming at her. I think He’s fallen in love with her, well we all have. She smiles, relived. God she looks gorgeous. Ok she has friends, maybe they like hockey too. You know, more girls for these guys to drool over so she isn’t swamped. Maybe then I can get to know her better. I mean she lives near me, and will be staying in my street. As long as the guys don’t decide to move in, I’ve got an advantage.
“Ok, you have to have some kind of flaw.” James continued. ‘Oh I got a problem. He really likes her. He’s flattering her. Uh oh.’ I think to myself.
“Wait, what team do you support?” he says, looking sceptically at her but he’s also smiling at her.
“You’re going to hate me for it I can tell. I am a…” she trails of looking down. I bet she’s a Red Sox fan like Syd was- is oh I don’t know but she really reminds me of Syd for some reason it’s got to be the hair and eyes possibly wishful thinking, I miss her so much.
“Come on I promise we won’t kill you for it.” James says teasingly, still smiling at her. All I can think is ‘please say she’s not a Kings fan’ I never thought I would ever think that, ever in my whole life, but James has said it once if he’s aid it a thousand times that he could never love a woman who supported a different team as him. God please say she doesn’t support the Kings please! What the hell am I thinking? She would be perfect if she did support the Kings. Just then, she stops the internal argument going on in my head by answering;
“Well I am a Red Sox fan actually. You guys are probably all Kings.” Addressing us all, ‘YES! Did I just think that?’ The guys all have one big sigh of disappointment. It seems as if we were all holding our breath for her reply. She looks as if she is holding back giggles. I wonder why she’s a Red Sox fan, probably something cute like Syd’s reason.
*Flashback*
“Ok Syd, if you like hockey you have to have a hockey team to support” William said, picking Sydney up gently from the floor, and placing her on the raised counter beside them, and produced a hockey magazine from the side, gently giving it to the little girl.
“Michael no, no influences. She can make up her own decisions.” William said, sending him comically out the room. Which just caused Syd to giggle at he little boy antics, as he poked his head back in the door, when his dad had turned round and mouthed ‘one sec’ putting up one of his fingers then disappearing again, just as William turned back to check at what Syd was looking at.
I remember running out the front door and round the side of the house and climbing up onto the garden bench armrest nearest the kitchen window. I balanced there using my fingers to clamp onto the windowsill, managing to barely poke my head into the corner of the window. I gaze into the kitchen. Luckily my dad’s back is to me, so I am free to try to get Syd’s attention.
‘Right how am I going to do this?’ I think while trying to balance for long enough to wave at her. She pauses while reading through the magazine, frowns a bit then looks straight at me. ‘Hi’ I mouthed, and she just smiled, then looked up at my dad smiling at him hoping that he didn’t notice, but it seems he’s concentrating on the coffee cup in his hands. He always does that when he’s thinking.
I bit my lip, trying to think of a way to give her the clue to pick ‘the Kings.’ My efforts are unsuccessful. I come up with nothing. Trying to mouth it to her isn’t successful because she can’t really see my mouth. I glance behind myself to make sure no one is coming to give me away, and it hits me. The Kings jersey that my dad bought for me when I was born. It’s still really big on me. He always tells me that he got it so I can wear it my whole life. After heavy use, it’s already got a few holes in it and the colours are fading, but it doesn’t bother me, it’s still my favourite. I smile at the memory, and look back at Syd. I somehow manage to use one of my hands to point to it behind me, continually willing her ‘The Kings, The Kings, The Kings pick The Kings’ going through my head in a mantra willing her to be psychic.
“So, picked one?” my dad says, causing me to duck my head down even though I’m behind him. I know I’ll be tickled to death if he sees me. Syd looks straight back at him and smiles, then looks back flipping through the pages. She glances back out the window a few times. Then she smiles broadly and stops on a page and proudly announces turning the magazine around, as my dad steps closer blocking my view of the magazine. I strain my neck trying to see which one it is. I hear my dad chuckle then say questionably still with amusement in his voice.
“What made you chose that team.” I see her look down at the magazine turning it around biting her lip. I can tell that she’s doing some fast thinking, then she looks up at my dad and states as if their was never a question in her mind.
“I like the name.” My dad just chuckles in response and picks her up resting her on his hip gently taking the magazine and placing it back on the counter. Then he places her gently down on the ground like she was the most precious thing in the world. ‘Which she is like an angel’ my dad gently swats down in font of her so he’s eyelevel with her. Using what my mum calls the Vaughn crocked smile to be possessed by all Male Vaughn’s to cause anyone they care about to feel the luckiest in the world. However, like Spiderman with great power, comes great responsibility you may only use this smile on someone who means a lot to you and you love. My dad must care about her a lot. He only smiles like that to mum, Lil and me. I think Syd has a power of her own thought. The smile she just gave my dad she is so beautiful and her dimples are adorable ‘she’s definitely an angel’.
“Ok, so you’re a red socks fan huh?” My dad says teasingly. ‘WHAT’
“Red Sox?” ‘Oh did I just say that out loud?’ my dad and Syd both look straight at me.
“Uh oooooooooooooh” I knew I’d lose my balance sooner or later. ‘Ouch’ the next thing I know Syd and my dad have come out the back door and are standing over me. Syd seems half way between concerned and just giggling closer to the latter. I can’t help but smile up at her, then my eyes look over her shoulder and meet my dad’s gaze ‘oh I’m so busted.’
“Nice weather today isn’t it?” I say smiling hopefully up at him.
“Ok, you little Mr, are going to be tickled mercilessly for attempting to cheat. As for you, you little missy, you are going to be tickled mercilessly for being a Red Socks fan.” He says simply looking between the two of us and then rubbing his hands together as if preparing to really get down to work.
“You have 10 seconds to attempt to run.” My dad said smiling at us we just looked at one another.
“One, two, three…” That’s we grab hold of each other’s hands at the same time. We were up and running. Syd giggled the sweet way she does.
*Present Time*
“Hey man what the hell are you so happy about? You’re a Kings fan too.” Oh I must have a goofy smile on my face the guys are all looking at me teasingly and she’s just happily smiling at me with guilt of curiosity mixed with mischief in her eyes.
“Oh, sorry I was just thinking of something else. Anyway Red Sox fans aren’t that bad.”
“God it’s finally happened.” John says looking at me strangely same as the other guys.
“What?”
“Coach has worked you so hard; your brain has gone to mush.” All the guys laugh at that. Weiss continues in a fake consoling voice clapping me on the shoulder.
“See, someone can only be a Boy Scout for so many years then it’s damaging to your health man.” All I can do that is smile and shake my head.
“Everyone needs mates like these.” I say flashing my crocked smile at her she smile’s back shaking her head looking out at the road the way I was moments before. I can’t help but smile at her out of the corner of my eye I can see Weiss. Unwillingly I turn my attention to him I can see in his face the clear message in neon flashing lights above his head saying ‘oh! So you like her too! Na, Na, Na-Na-Nah!’ A combination of embarrassment which I can feel rising in my cheeks and requirement to turn back to the road I do.
I know the reason for this. Only yesterday I was telling Weiss how I was through with women for a while after dating and becoming like an older brother to three so far. Don’t get me wrong, they were beautiful. Two were airheads, but I felt platonic love towards them instead of actual nervous, infatuated and crazy love. I wish I’d figured that out before sleeping with my latest girlfriend, Alice. We’re still really good friends, but not as close as we were. We’re a little uncomfortable around one another, but nothing compared to when we actually slept together, I think that we didn’t love each other as much as we thought at the time. That was six mouths ago, so the guys think that I should definitely move on. They think I need some sort of rebound, but the truth is when we both agreed to break up it was more of a relief than anything for both of us. I just want don’t want some girl I don’t know. Rebounds always end badly. I want someone I can love, make me feel different. I don’t know how, but I’ll know when I feel it.
The guys say I’m a lady’s man, just the emotional type who makes friends out of girls, and the ones who fancy me I get to know until we’re too close friends to become anything else. I just haven’t felt like that with anyone or if I do, it faded after a couple of months. I don’t know why I just prefer girls as friends. My dad says that it’s because I haven’t found the right girl, God I hope he’s right. Weiss says my sister and mum have turned me into a girly guy. He also says that I might be gay. That might put the value Weiss’s advice in perspective. ‘What if I am gay? WOW no, no, no I like girls too much to be gay, right? Over thinking things I am over thinking things again. I can’t be gay. Like this girl, my heart did something it’s never done before except of course when I’m going for a shot. See not gay. Stupid. Weiss trying to give me a panic attack. I mean there is nothing wrong with being gay. I have quite a few gay friends but I like girls, especially the one in the back seat of my car right now’
“Hey Michael you’re goanna miss your house.” Weiss says. I turn the car into the driveway stop and look back at the girl who looks away from the house then looks at me questionably. The next thing I hear is someone who sounds like my sister yell.
“Syd!” ‘What the hell. Syd? As in Syd my Syd, Sydney?”
