“Wait. You two know each other?” Nadia and Sydney asked.

“Yup. Been best friends since college.” Eric replied with a smile.

~Part 21~

Inching their way with others to the bride and groom, Sydney wasn’t surprised Michael was stopped often by someone in her family.

Before they reached the huge ballroom of a nearby hotel for the reception, all of her cousins, aunts and friends had made their way to Michael.

“Could they wear name tags next time?” his fingers skimmed lightly up her back.” I’ll never remember all of them.

“They don’t expect you to.” She smiled at him, realized she wished the evening was over, wanted to be alone with him again.

“If you can remember one name, use it. They’ll be pleased you remembered at least one by the end of the night.”

Lover like, he brought her close against his hip and urged her toward the open door.

“You’re kidding?”

“No.” She tilted her face up to his for a quick kiss.

Her aunt Isabelle, her father’s oldest sister, stopped beside them and grabbed Sydney’s arm.

“Is this your fiancé, Sydney?”

Silently groaning, she avoided looking at Michael who flashed her a smile. “Aunt Isabelle, this is Michael Vaughn. Michael is my…friend.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“Very handsome young man. Don’t let this one go.” She murmured in Sydney’s ear.

After the meal, everyone stepped onto the dance floor. Jack was dancing with Irina. Nadia with Eric. Sydney was stuck with one of her cousin while Aunt Isabelle grabbed Vaughn’s hand and dragged him to the dance floor.

In the middle of the song, Isabelle nudged Sydney so hard at Michael that she plowed into him.

She kept her hand pressed against his chest. “Subtlety is not a family trait.”

He wrapped an arm around her waist. “I’m not complaining, “ he assured her, pulling her even closer.

“They’re cute.”

“Oh, you’re a kind man.”

“Come on, we’d better dance.” Taking her hand, he led her onto a corner of the dance floor. She belonged in his arms. He gathered her closer to him. He had no idea how much his words meant to her. She could never love someone who didn’t understand how important her family was to her.

For several songs they stayed on the dance floor, their bodies close and swaying to the music. Lightly she curled her hand around the back of his neck and pressed her cheek to his. At the brush of his thigh, warmth rushed through her. She knew his body. It was as familiar to her as her own now.

After the song was over, Sydney excused herself to go talk to her sister. Leaving Michael with her mother.

“Are you having a good time?” Irina asked brightly Michael after taking him for another spin around the dance floor.

“Yes. Everyone is all very nice.”

“Good. We all love Sydney very much . Her happiness matters to us.”

“To me, too.” He said as Irina nodded.

Sydney cast a sidelong glance at Michael. Beside him, her mother smiled and chattered. About what? Every embarrassing childhood stories she could come up with? Sydney thought as she made her way toward them.

“Now, I have to go find my husband.” She kissed Sydney’s cheek to whisper in her hear. “Your doctor friend is nice.”

Pleased, Sydney sidled close to Michael and slid her arm around his back. “Did she tell you I froze at my first dance recital?”

His eyes gleamed with amusement.” Did you?”

Sydney winced. “Oh, she didn’t tell you that?”

“No.” His hand at her waist squeezed gently. “Only that you ran from a rooster when you were three?”

When she looked up, she saw the smile glimmering in his eyes. “You’re a tease.”

Amusement lingered while the bride and groom cut the cake.

“We can leave now, “Sydney said, assuming Michael had early-morning rounds at the hospital.

“Or do you really want a taste?”

He bent his head, nibbled at her earlobe. “Yes.”

Smiling, she drew him along with her. They quickly said goodbyes to her parents and to Eric and Nadia. Eric gave Michael a thumb up and promised him to call soon for some serious guy bounding.

Michael took Sydney’s hand and quicken the pace to the car.

Content. A moment passed before Michael registered where he was. He stretched his legs but they made no contact with the slim, warm ones his had tangled with during the night. Shifting from his side to his back, he turned his head toward the pillow, filled himself with the fragrant scent, her scent, that clung to it.

He missed her. He couldn’t remember a moment in his life when he’d felt so content with any woman and so lost without her around.

Wrapping a hand around the brass headboard, he took the time to scan her sunlit bedroom. He remembered tossing the half-dozen brightly colored pillows in different shades of blue off the bed last night. He so rarely had a chance to laze around that he was tempted, but impatience nudged him.

He wanted to see her.

As he pushed back what he knew was a handmade quilt from Aunt Isabelle, a laugh tickled his throat. Still smiling, he yanked up his pants and made his way down the hallway. Throughout the apartment, light flowed in from huge windows. He liked her home, including the movie posters, framed and hanging everywhere. In the living room, she’d added brightly colored throw pillows in blue to the white sectional. An expensive rug added color to the dining room with its plain, long, wood table that seemed more suitable for a farmhouse than Manhattan.

Even before he finished going from room to room, he knew she was gone, made a logical assumption that she’d left for her shift at the hospital. He returned to the bedroom for the rest of his clothes. With his suit jacket in hand, then wondered into the kitchen for the coffee she’d left him.

It was then he spotted her note: “Michael…Sorry I had to leave. See you later.”

Smiling he took his coffee mug into the dining room. One wall was adorned with her family’s photos. A day ago, they would have been strangers’ faces. Now he could point and name most of the smiling people.

Turning, he stared at a calendar with cute photos of puppies that was pinned to a small cork bulletin board. Sydney had scribbles in names to designate birthdays. Today’s date bore a different notation. Dr. Kem, 9:00am.

A full second passed before his mind clicked with what he’d read. Gina Kem was an ob/gyn. Damn. She was there for more tests. Why hadn’t she told him? The last thing she needed was to be alone.
