Sydney sat on a bench waiting for him. She knew that he wouldn’t show. He was going to stand up just like every other guy that she had dated before. It was all the same.
Then she saw a man round the corner and Michael popped out. He walked up to Sydney and handed her a single rose. It was sweet and simple.
“I thought we’d just walk around and talk” he told her
“Ok” she replied getting up and wiping a few leaves off
They walked for what seemed like forever without saying anything to the other. Sydney was more than determined to break the ice. She wanted this to be her first real relationship. Not like the rest of her relationships that suddenly appeared fake and unmeaning in every way.
“What do you do?” she asked him nudging closer to him
“I’m a lawyer” he answered
“Oh” she said
He was a lawyer.
‘That’s just great’ Sydney thought ‘A lawyer dating a stripper. How peachy’
“What do you do?” he asked turning to her
‘s***. Lie? Tell the truth?’ she thought
“I’m an assistant at a business” she replied “Not very exciting”
He laughed. She hadn’t meant for it to be a joke but she loved his laugh. It was warm and cheerful and any woman would’ve fallen head over heels for it.
“It’s not like being a lawyer’s exciting” he said after a moment
“It’s got to be better than being an assistant” she challenged raising her eyebrows
“Dealing with ***hole clients and b****y partners sure is fun” he lied
It was her turn to laugh now. Even though she wasn’t sure if it was the right time to. They had been walking for ten minutes and still hadn’t gotten off the subject of jobs. She had to change it now.
Sydney’s cell phone rang. She excused herself from Vaughn and leaned against the nearest tree. “Hello?” she said
“How’s it going?” Francie asked
“Good”
“What are you talking about?”
“Jobs”
“Well that sounds boring. Change the subject and quick!”
Sydney heard a soft click and knew that Francie had hung up. She raced back over to Vaughn and slid her cell phone back in her pocket.
“Sorry about that” she apologized
“its fine” he reassured her
They continued to walk down the path but it soon came to an end. Cars whizzed past them on the busy street and neither knew what to do.
“Want to go have dinner?” he asked “I know this great pizza place”
“Sure” she said smiling
Her dream was coming true….
