Unforseen Confessions

-Italy-
Sydney drove up to the mansion where the party she was supposed to be attending was being held.
“Dixon I just pulled up, I’m going in.” Syd said.
“Copy that, I’ve added the name Natasha Sandfox to the list, you should be good to go.” Dixon said.
“Thanks.” She said. Sydney walked up to the front door.
“Name?” The man asked. He had a palm pilot with all the guest names on it.
“Natasha Sandfox.” Syd said. The man looked at her and then checked the list.
“Have a fine evening.” He said. The two guards opened the door for her and she stepped inside. She wore a black spigetti strap dress down to her ankles, and her hair was pulled up neatly. Sydney took a glass of wine from the waiter and walked around looking for the stairs.
“Dixon, I found the stairs.” Syd said.
“Copy that, the room is upstairs to the right, 3rd door on the left.” He said. Sydney set her wine down on the table and walked upstairs as if looking for the bathroom. She walked to the door and picked the lock. She got inside and began to look for what she came for. She finally found the safe under the desk, she used the decoder to get the combination and opened it. Nothing.
“Dixon, there’s nothing here, it must have been a set up.” Sydney said.
“Okay, just get out of there.” Dixon said. Sydney closed the safe and stood back up. She was sticking the decoder back inside her purse when everything went black….
-Later that Night-
Sydney woke up handcuffed to an aluminum chair, she had the biggest headache and the room was bright. The walls were a shade of gray and there was a huge mirror on one wall. And she knew what was on the other side, her captors. There was a table sitting in front of her and two files, one said SD-6 on the front and the other had her name on it. Just then the door opened. She looked over and a fairly tall man walked in. He had dirty blonde hair and green eyes. He was wearing a black suit and was accompanied by another man that just stood by the door.
“Who the hell are you? And what do you want with me?” Syd asked. Michael Vaughn sat down across from her.
“What do you know about SD-6?” Vaughn asked. Sydney stared at him.
“I don’t know what you’re talking about.” Syd said.
“Right, I forgot, if you tell anyone who you work for then they’ll kill you and the person you told, what kind of US Agency does that?” Vaughn asked.
“First of all, I don’t have conversations with people I don’t know, secondly, I don’t talk to people who keep me handcuffed to an aluminum chair.” Syd said. Vaughn was taken aback by her anger.
“To answer the first statement, my name is Michael Vaughn, and how do I know if I let you go you won’t try to kill me?” Vaughn asked.
“You don’t.” Syd said. Vaughn stared at her. He didn’t know why but something was pulling him to her. He looked over to the guard at the door and snapped his fingers. The guard threw the keys to Vaughn. He stood up and walked next to her. He carefully uncuffed one of her hands then moved to the next. Vaughn was wrong about her. With one swift motion she jumped up and punched him in the face then kicked him in the stomach, making him hit the wall and fall to the ground. The agent standing by the door hit Sydney across the face and she fell to the ground, face first. The guard took out his stun gun and was about to stun her when Vaughn interrupted.
“Stop!” Vaughn yelled. The guard looked at Vaughn.
“Leave.” Vaughn said. The guard looked at him confused.
“Now.” Vaughn said. The guard backed up and walked out of the room. Vaughn stood up. Sydney was still on the ground. Vaughn pulled out his gun. Sydney stood up.
“Sit down.” Vaughn said firmly. Sydney gave him a hard angry look and did so. He walked over to the table.
“You know, we can do this two ways, one, I can stand here like an a**hole and point this gun at you, and handcuff you to the chair, which isn’t my favorite way to do this. Second I can put this damn thing away and I’ll leave you uncuffed and we’ll both be happy.” Vaughn said.
“So it’s your choice, do you want to try that again?” Vaughn asked. Sydney crossed her arms and looked away from him.
“Good.” He said. He put his gun away and sat down at the table.
“I’m going to tell you things that are going to seem absurd, but they’re not.” Vaughn said. He pulled the files in front of him.
“I know who you are, Sydney. I know you work for SD-6, for Sloane. But there’s something that you don’t know about him. I take it you’ve heard of the Alliance?” Vaughn asked. Sydney looked at him.
“An organization that sells weapons and drugs on the black market, also an organized terrorist group.” Syd said.
“I have the list of branches here, the 12 branches that make up the alliance.” Vaughn said. He put the list in front of Sydney.

Sydney sat there unbelieving.
“Look I don’t know who you are but…”
“I work for the CIA.” Vaughn said.
“I don’t believe you.” Syd said.
“Have you ever been to Langley?” Vaughn asked. Sydney sat silent.
“Well, no but SD-6 is just a secret branch of the CIA.” Syd said.
“If you don’t believe me, I’ll take you through the doors of the Langely myself.” Vaughn said. Sydney sat there.
“Do you actually think the real CIA would murder someone for finding out about us?” Vaughn asked. Sydney looked at him.
“So what do you want from me? You want me to become a double agent?” Syd asked.
“Yes, you’ll be working for the CIA and you’ll be undercover at SD-6.” Vaughn said.
“And how am I supposed to contact the CIA without SD-6 knowing what I’m up to?” Syd asked
“You’ll be given a handler, he’ll contact you to give you counter missions and you’re op tech.” Vaughn said. He pulled out some papers.
“Sign these and you’re in.” He said. Giving her a pen. She looked at them briefly and then signed them.
“Welcome to the CIA.” Vaughn said.
“Like I haven’t heard that before.” Syd said. Vaughn chuckled a little.
“Yeah well, I promise you this ones real.” He said.
“I’ll get someone to give you a ride to the airport, I’ll be right back.” He said. He walked out and then came back in with an ice pack.
“Here.” He said handing it to her.
“For your head.” He said. She put it to the back of her head.
“Thank you.” She said.
“Come with me.” He said. He led here out of the room and then she was taken to the airport.
-LA-
Sydney sat in Sloanes office with an ice pack to her head.
“So after they were done with you they just dumped you in front of the airport?” Sloane asked.
“Yeah, I don’t know why they didn’t just drop me at the party where they got me from.” Syd said. Sloane appeared to be thinking.
“Well, I’m just glad you’re okay, who ever gave us that false Intel will be dealt with.” Sloane said.
“I hope so.” Syd said.
-CIA Operations Center-
Sydney sat in the briefing room with Director Kendall.
“Well, we’re glad to have you aboard. Now that everything is taken care of you may choose your handler. We have two Senior officers, one is Agent Lambert, the other is Agent Smith.” Kendall said passing the agents profiles to her. She didn’t look at them.
“Actually I was wondering if Agent Michael Vaughn could possibly be my handler.” Sydney said. Kendall looked at her.
“Well, Agent Bristow, he is only a Junior Agent, he cant be a handler unless he’s a senior agent.” Kendall said.
“So promote him.” Sydney said.
“Why do you want him as your handler anyway?” Kendall asked.
“Because, he’s the one who told me the truth, I don’t know anyone here except for him, I’d rather have someone that I’ve meet before, plus he seems very professional, I think you’re really holding him back, he should be a senior agent.” Syd said. Kendall stared at her. He pressed the intercom for his secretary.
“Yes, Mr. Kendall.” The lady answered.
“Get Agent Vaughn in here now.” Kendall said.
“Yes sir, right away.” She said.
“I sure hope your right, he has no experience as a handler.” Kendall said.
“I have an instinct.” Syd said. The door to the office opened and Vaughn walked in. He saw Sydney sitting across from Kendall.
“You wanted to see me sir?” Vaughn asked. ‘Great she probably told him I pulled a gun on her.’ Vaughn thought.
“Sit down.” Kendall said. Vaughn sat down in the empty chair next to Sydney.
“Congratulations Agent Vaughn, you have been promoted to Senior Agent.” Kendall said. Vaughn looked confused.
‘You’ll be Agent Bristows Handler as long as she works for SD-6.” Kendall said. Vaughn looked at Sydney and Sydney looked at Vaughn.
‘And so it begins’

Why do people always ask for pm's after these Romance stories? I'm just curious. What's it for? Can I get one too?
PM's are just personal messages you send people when you update your story. ;)

:woot: Wow! Smashing start! I'm really interested to read more, this seems like a really fabulous story. Vaughn oughta be thankful for that promotion. Well, something tells me he'll appreciate it... ;) Update, update, update! Pwetty please...?

Okay, this chapter isnt the best but it will get better, i promise. :D

Ch 2.

Sydney and Vaughn walked out of the briefing room.
“Okay, so how in the hell did you manage to do that?” Vaughn asked.
“Do what?” Syd asked.
“Get Kendall to promote me.” Vaughn said.
“I’ve been trying to get promoted for over 4 months, and then the first day you’re here you get it just like that.” Vaughn said snapping his fingers.
“Why?” Vaughn asked.
“Why pick me?” He asked.
“I don’t know, but as soon as I do I’ll tell you.” Syd said. Vaughn shook his head.
“Come on, I’ll show ou your desk.” He said. He led her over to the empty desk.
“Okay, we have nicer desks at SD-6.” Syd said.
“Yeah well the CIA doesn’t make their money off of the black market, so the money they do make tends to go to some more important cause than to give everyone an executive desk.” Vaughn said. Eric Weiss walked over.
“Yeah makes you wonder where all the tax payer dollars go.” Weiss said. Sydney smiled.
“Uh, Agent Bristow, this is Eric Weiss. Weiss this is Agent Sydney Bristow.” Vaughn said.
“Nice to meet you.” Weiss said nodding.
“Yeah, you too.” Syd said.
“Agent Bristow is our new double inside SD-6.” Vaughn said.
“Really?” Weiss said surprised that it was girl. The most important piece of taking down SD-6 was a woman.
“Why do you act surprised?” Syd asked.
“No reason, I just thought that you’d be a guy.” Weiss said. Weiss looked over at Vaughn.
“Hey man, where’d you get that bruise on your cheek?” Weiss asked. Vaughn looked at Sydney and smiled.
“I ah, I got into a fight.” Vaughn said. Sydney shook her head and looked at the ground. ‘Men and their ego’s.’
“Oh, must have been some huge guy.” Weiss said.
“Uh, he was. Anyway, I was just showing Agent Bristow her desk.” Vaughn said.
“Oh so…”
“Okay, you can call me Sydney, or Syd, just stop calling me agent Bristow.” Syd said. Vaughn and Weiss looked at her.
“Uh, okay, I was showing Sydney her desk.” Vaughn said.
“Oh, very interesting ain’t it?” Weiss asked.
“Yes, very.” Syd said.
“You actually get your own stapler.” Weiss said.
“Okay, go away.” Vaughn said.
“They give you refills to.” Weiss said. Vaughn pushed Weiss away. Sydney shook her head.
“Sorry, he’s the only comedy we have around here.” Vaughn said.
“So here’s your phone.” He said pulling out a blue Nokia.
“Only use it for CIA purposes, it has a separate line so SD-6 cant tap it. My number is programmed in here, it’s #1 on speed dial. When we have a counter mission ready for you, someone will call your house asking for Joeys Pizza, easily say it’s the wrong number, that’s your cue to go to the Lock Up warehouse on Pier 47. That’ll be where we meet for everything.” Vaughn said. He handed her the phone. She nodded.
“Are you okay?” He asked. She looked up.
“Yeah, this is just…”
“A lot? Yeah I know, but it’ll get better, the more help we get the sooner SD-6 is taken down.” Vaughn said.
“Can I go?” Syd asked.
“Yeah, just, when you get a mission remember to call me so we can set up a meeting.” Vaughn said.
“I will, thanks.” She said. He nodded and she walked away.
-Next day-
-SD-6-
Sydney walked into the briefing room, Dixon was already there. She sat down in her normal seat.
“You two are going to Spain, there’s a man there by the name Timothy Jenski. He is a computer specialist, he may know the location of the disk that you were looking for last time you were in Italy. I want you to go and find out what he knows. Also Allen Woloch will be accompanying you on this mission.” Sloane said.
“Who is he?” Syd asked.
“He’s an agent, he’ll do his part.” Sloane said.
“You leave in 4 hours.” Sloane said. Sydney and Dixon got up and walked out of the briefing room. Sydney was stopped by Jack.
“I need to talk to you.” Jack said.
“Okay.” Syd said.
“Meet me at our usual spot.” Jack said. Sydney was curious, why did he need to talk to her so badly?
-The Pier-
Sydney walked down to the end of the pier where Jack was standing.
“Hey.” Syd said.
“I know what you did.” Jack said.
“What?” Syd asked.
“You being a double. They told you the truth about SD-6.” Jack said.
“Dad, i…”
“Sydney, you should know, you’re not the only one.” Jack said. Sydney stood there for a minute processing the information.
“You? Dad, why didn’t you tell me about this earlier?” Syd asked.
“Because, they wouldn’t let me, they wanted to wait until they knew you were in this for good. After Danny’s death they thought you would back out, they couldn’t use you then.” Jack said.
“The CIA?” Syd asked. Jack shook his head up and down.
“Did they know about what SD-6 was going to do to Danny?” Syd asked. Jack was silent.
“Did you know?” Syd asked. She was becoming increasingly hurt as he stood silent.
“I tried to get him out, I bought him a plane ticket to Chicago, I arrived to late. I’m sorry Sydney.” Jack said. Sydney looked out over the ocean, she was torn apart.
“There’s something else you should know.” He said. She didn’t look at him.
“The man that is accompanying you on this mission to Spain, he’s an assassin for SD-6. Sloane wants Jenski dead, that’s why Woloch is going.” Jack said.
“So am I supposed to do, stop him?” Syd asked.
“The CIA will give you a counter mission, but Sydney, this man he….” Her CIA cell phone rang.
“Hello?” She answered.
“Warehouse, now.” Vaughn said. The line went dead. She put her cell phone away then looked at her dad.
“I have to go, It was my handler.” Syd said. She started to walk away.
“Sydney, he killed Danny.”

Hey, that was really good chapter! Heh, men and their egos, indeed. ;) Looking forward for the next update!

I'm so glad you guys like it. I'll have more up soon. There are going to be two, really long Syd and Vaughn conversations coming up, and they're great, tons of fluff. :D One is at the warehouse, and the other takes place at the Observitory. :D

I just found your story, and I can say it is AWESOME!!!! (y) (y) I love it. But why did you have to bring Danny into it :( It's still so awesome. I loved the beginning. Different approach was cool. Can I get a pm when you update? This story rocks  More soon please :D (y)

Love ya,

Penny :angelic:

“Sydney, he killed Danny.” Jack said. Sydney stopped in her tracks.
“He’s the assassin Sloane used to kill Danny.” Jack said.
“I’m sorry.” He said. Sydney stood there for a moment, then walked back to her car as tears streamed down her face. She pulled up to the warehouse where she was supposed to meet Vaughn, a green Buick was sitting outside. She sat there for a moment, trying to compose herself so that he wouldn’t notice anything, she couldn’t let anyone she her weak, that’s why she just walked away from her father. She took a few deep breaths and put eyedrops in her eyes, they immediately relieved the irritation of the tears, the cool liquid made the redness disappear. Sydney took one last look in her mirror then got out and walked into the warehouse, at first she had no clue on where to go, but then she saw an open fence. She walked inside the small fenced in area and sure enough Vaughn was sitting on the table reading over a file. He looked up and she walked over to a chair and sat down.
“Hey.” He said.
“Hi.” She said. He immediately sensed something wrong but brushed it off.
“Okay, I got info on your mission, from the intel you got from SD-6 we pulled Jenski out of Spain, we got the information from him too. When you get there it will appear that you were too late, he’ll appear dead, but its only so Holoch won’t kill him. We agreed to let him go after all this is done, that’s the only reason he is cooperating.” Vaughn said.
“Okay.” Syd said. She just sat there.
“Are you okay?” Vaughn asked.
“Yeah, just had a bad day.” Syd said.
“Well, you want to talk about it?” Vaughn asked.
“No, I’m fine, really.” Syd said. Sydney didn’t really trust Vaughn enough to tell him what she was feeling, she didn’t want to be weak and confide in someone other than herself, she could end up getting hurt.
“Okay, but if you ever need to talk, you can call me, anytime.” He said. She smiled.
“I thought there were rules that said we can only talk about business.” Syd said.
“Anytime.” He said again. Sydney shook her head and picked up her stuff.
“I have to go pack. So when I get back I just report to you again?” Syd asked.
“Yeah.” He said.
“Okay, bye.” She said. She started to walk out.
“Good luck.” He said. That was the first time anyone has ever wished her luck. She smiled and kept on walking.
-Spain-
Sydney got off the plane and walked to the waiting limo. She got in and across from her was seated another man.
“Sydney Bristow?” The man asked.
“Yes.” Syd said.
“Woloch.” Woloch said. ‘Okay do you have a first name son of a b****? Oh my Gosh, I just want to kill him. He knows who I am, he knows he killed danny, why is he smiling at me like that? He’d better stop before I break his face.’
“Sloane has told me a lot about you.” Woloch said. ‘You a**. I cant believe he’s saying this to me.’
“I’m sure.” Syd said. He just stared at her. ‘If he doesn’t stop staring at me I’m going to claw out his eyes. I cant believe I’m sitting across from Danny’s killer and I cant do a thing about it. Or can I?’
About 20 minutes later they arrived at Jenski’s house. They put on their gear and went inside, and up to the bedroom. He was there all right, blood all over the bed. Sydney and Woloch walked over to him.
“Is he dead?” Syd asked. Woloch checked his pulse. He stepped back. He looked at Sydney and shook his head ‘no’. Just then Jenski sat up and started shooting, he shot Woloch right in the chest. He fell to the ground screaming. Sydney pulled out her gun.
“Stop shooting, I’m CIA.” Syd said. ‘Oh shi*!’ Woloch looked at her. He pulled out his radio.
“This is Woloch, we have a situation, it turns out…” Sydney shot Woloch in the hand, making him drop the radio. He screamed.
“What the hell are you doing!?!” He yelled clenching his hand and chest. Sydney stood up.
“You killed him you son of a b****!” Syd said.
“What! Who?” Woloch asked.
“You killed Danny.” She said. Woloch’s face relaxed. His mouth pulled up in a smile.
“Oh, yes, the British doctor.” Woloch said.
“Why?” Syd asked.
“Life’s a b**** isn’t it?” He asked. She cocked her gun again.
“Yeah, it is.” She said. She pulled the trigger, shooting him right in the chest, seemingly through the heart. Jenski was sitting there in shock. She looked over at him. He didn’t have his gun trained on her.
“You’re the CIA agent they told me about.” Jenski said.
“I suggest you go before the police show up.” Syd said. She climbed through the window and down the drainpipe. She got back into the limo. The driver was confused.
“Go get out of here! It was a set up.” Syd said. The driver took off. Sydney laid her head back on the seat. This was going to be a b**** to explain.
-LA-
-SD-6-
Sydney sat in Sloane’s office.
“So what happened?” Sloane asked. Sydney shook her head.
“He knew we were coming, it was set up. When we walked into the room he was on the bed, there was blood everywhere, Woloch checked his pulse, he looked at me and said Jenski wasn’t dead. We were just standing there, when Jenski sat up and started shooting. He shot Woloch in the chest, twice I think, I don’t know. I tried to get him out but there was no way. So I did the only thing I could, I ran.” Sydney put a hand over her mouth and began to cry. Sloane got up and sat next to her putting an arm on her shoulder.
“Sydney, it wasn’t your fault, if you would have stayed you would have been killed too. And this agency can’t risk losing you. We have to find out what organization keeps on intercepting our Intel before us.” Sloane said.
“Could it be Sark?” Syd asked. Sloane sighed.
“It could be, I’m not sure. There’s nothing left for you to do, why don’t you go home and relax.” Sloane said. Sydney nodded.
“Thank you.” She said. He hugged her. When they were done Sydney walked out of the office and went home, she took a shower to make sure there were no bugs on her and then called Vaughn. She took out he cell phone and pressed 1 and then ‘Send’.
“Vaughn here.” Vaughn said.
“It’s me, I…I need to talk to you.” Syd said.
“Yeah, and I need to talk to you.” He said. He sounded on edge.
“Warehouse, one hour.” He said. He hung up. She put her phone down and threw on some jeans and a T-shirt. She grabbed her keys and drove to the warehouse. She walked inside but he wasn’t there yet. So she sat down and waited. About 10 minutes later he walked in.
“Hey…”
“What the hell were you thinking!?!” He said angry.
“Killing an agent of SD-6! Do you want to get us both fired?” He asked.
“Vaughn I…”
“How do we know that Sloane doesn’t know it was you who did it?” Vaughn asked.
“Woloch was going to report me!” She yelled.
“That doesn’t give you the right…”
“I had no choice!”
“…to kill a man because that’s the first thing that you could think of to do!”
“What would you have done if he was responsible for the death of you fiancée!?!” Syd yelled. Vaughn fell silent. Sydney had tears in her eyes as she yelled.
“He killed Danny! He killed him in cold blood! He got what he deserved! He was a horrible man, an assassin, who probably killed many other people to! I wasn’t going to sit there and let him get away with it!” She said. Vaughn stared at her. He had made her more upset than she was.
“You’ll never understand what it’s like to lose someone that way!” Syd said. Her voice was cracking. She got up and was about to storm out when Vaughn grabbed her by the arm gently.
“Let go of me!” She yelled trying to get out of his grip. He held her tighter. She looked him straight in the eye.
“I…said…let…go.” She said slow and in a cold voice. Vaughn let go of her arm. She gave him a glare and then ran out of the warehouse. Vaughn sighed. She was going to be one pain in the a**. Sydney ran to her car and drove off. She drove home, Francie’s car was in the driveway. Sydney walked inside. Francie was plopped on the couch reading a book.
“Hey, Syd man I haven’t seen you in….” Francie looked at Sydney and saw her eyes were red and puffy.
“Sydney?” Fran asked. She set her book down. Sydney walked over to the couch and sat down. Francie hugged her friend.
“Sweetie what’s wrong?” Fran asked.
“I’ve just had a really bad day.” Syd said.
“You want to talk about it?” Fran asked. Sydney shook her head. She began crying again.
-Later that night-
Sydney was asleep on the couch when she heard the phone ring. She opened her eyes and heard Francie talking.
“Listen, you’ve called three times, get a clue man, this isn’t Joey’s pizza.” Francie said. Sydney opened her eyes and sat up. Francie hung up.
“Gosh, if they call one more time I’m going to shoot someone.” Fran said. Sydney rubbed her eyes.
“Hey, I think I’m going to go pick up some ice cream. Do you want some?” Syd asked.
“Sure, get me some Mint Chocolate Chip.” Fran said. Sydney grabbed her coat.
“Okay.” Syd said. She took her keys and walked out of the house, getting in her car she started driving to the store. She took out her phone and saw there was a message. She played it.
“Sydney, it’s Vaughn, please if you get this message meet me at the warehouse at 8:30.” Vaughn said. Sydney put down her phone, it was 8:25. It would take her 15 minutes to get to the warehouse or she could just go get ice cream.
-Warehouse-
It was 8:35 and Vaughn had lost hope that Sydney was coming. He picked up his jacket and briefcase and was about to walk out when Sydney walked in. She sat down in the chair and folded her hands on the table in front of her.
“Whatever it is you’ve better make it fast.” Sydney said. Vaughn set his stuff down. He closed the gate and stood there for a moment.
“I called you here because I wanted to say I was sorry.” He said. She showed no emotion.
“If I would have known what connection Woloch had with you, I wouldn’t have acted the way I did.” Vaughn said.
“Is that it?” Syd asked ready to get up.
“You know, I’m glad you’re enjoying yourself. This isn’t exactly easy for me either okay? I spent three hours in an office with Kendall getting lectured on how I’m not doing my job. At first he actually thought you were the one who made the decision to kill Woloch but then I took the blame, saying I ordered you to kill him because he had discovered you to be a double agent. And trust me I have no idea why I did it now. Maybe it was the fact that I read your file and felt sorry for you, or maybe because I felt like I had to do it, or maybe because I just believed in you, had an instinct about you. Don’t even begin to pretend you’re the only person whose lost someone they love to this job, you’re not. Now for some reason I thought I owed it to you to bring you hear and say I’m sorry to you in person, but maybe that was the wrong move.” Vaughn said. Sydney was just staring at him, he looked hurt.
“Now we’re done.’ He said. He turned around and put some papers in his briefcase.
“Who did you lose?” Syd asked.
“What?” Vaughn asked as he kept doing what he was doing.
“You said I wasn’t the only person whose lost a loved on to this job, who did you lose?” Sydney asked. He stopped for a minute, not turning around.
“That’s not important.” He said.
“Was it your wife?” Sydney asked.
“Wife? I don’t have a wife, never did.” Vaughn said.
“Then who?” Sydney asked. He looked down leaning forward on the table.
“My father.” He said. He began closing his briefcase.
“When?” Sydney asked.
“Why are you so interested?” Vaughn asked
“Maybe it makes me feel better, to know I’m not alone.” Syd said. He turned to her and looked her straight in the eye. All anger was gone from her, now all he saw was pain, regret, and loneliness.
“When I was eight.” Vaughn said. She didn’t say anything. He sat down across from her.
“He was an agent, good man. He was well known around the halls of the CIA, one of the best. He died on a mission in Russia. He was supposed to apprehend a terrorist, but he was killed.” Vaughn said.
“The CIA told you all of this?” Syd asked.
“No, they don’t tell you anything, they give the agent a spot on the wall at Langley, just a star, no name, nothing that you can use to identify the victims. The only reason I know which one is his is because he was the only agent killed in that year. I’ll never forget the day of his funeral.

-Flashback-

8 year old Michael Vaughn sat next to his mother, who was crying uncontrollably. It was a dark day for him, for them all. William Vaughn was dead, the father he loved dearly was gone, taken to quickly from him. He didn’t get to know as much as he’d like to about his father, but what really hurt was that before William left Michael had told his father he hated him, he of course didn’t mean it, his words were the cause of the situation. William was supposed to take Vaughn to a hockey game, the one he had promised many times before but never made it because of work. Michael got upset and said that he wished he had a different father, one that loved him. Vaughn knew the words hurt his father, because as William walked away he shed one tear, but didn’t think twice about what he always said.
“I love you son.” No, William Vaughn never forgot to tell his son those three important words. That day would give Vaughn a different perspective on life, one that wasn’t taught. The funeral of his father was the hardest day of his life, nothing would ever be as hard as that.

-End Flashback-

Vaughn sat there, Sydney watched him closely.
“That day I vowed I would take my fathers killer to the grave, even if it meant the end of my life. I joined the CIA to find out who killed him, I tried for months to get Kendall to give me the file. He finally did. But what was in it wasn’t what I wanted. Instead of finding a name. I found out why at the wake there wasn’t an open casket so I could say goodbye to my father. It’s because, when they found him, no one could identify him, the only way they knew was by dental records. Then I saw pictures, ones taken of his torture, and then some after he passed. Seeing that only made me angrier. To this day I’m still trying to find out the murder’s name, giving up hope, means I’ve given up on him, and that’s not something I’m willing to let myself do.” Vaughn said. His eyes were kind of watery, but he held the tears in. He swallowed and looked up. Sydney was just staring at him.
“I lost my mother when I was 6. I remember, before her death my family used to be perfect. My parents loved each other, I was happy. I actually remember this one time, we went to Disney Land for my birthday,” Sydney was smiling as she remembered.
“We were waiting in line to get on that spinning tea cup ride, I think I was 4. Well I thought it would be funny to play hide and seek on them. So I went to the front of the crowd and got on with this other family. Man they were scared to death, and I was just sitting in the tea cup laughing. They didn’t think it was too funny, I got into a lot of trouble to.” Syd said. Vaughn laughed.
“My parents were coming back from a formal dinner party. There was a drunk on the other side of the road as they were on a bridge. My dad swerved to avoid the oncoming car but and instead they went of the side of the bridge into the lake. My father survived, but my mother didn’t. I didn’t even go to her funeral, my dad wouldn’t let me, I don’t know why. After my mothers death my father got really cold, I mean, emotionless, like nothing phased him. He never smiled or laughed again. He pretty much ignored me, my nanny was the only person that paid attention to me. She came to my school plays and events. She was like a big sister. At 18 my father gave me money so I could move out. He just told me to leave. So I found a nice place, moved in and now I have two roommates, who are also my best friends. I started going to UCLA, where I met Danny, my fiancée, he was studying to become a doctor. I loved him so much, then he asked me to marry him, I thought I finally found someone that I could be happy with. But I knew it wasn’t fair to keep lying to him, so I told him the truth about SD-6. Sloane killed him.” Sydney said. Tears ran down her cheeks, she wiped them away.
“Killing Woloch, I thought that it would feel good, like revenge. But really it feels worse, knowing that I’m no better than him. I killed him, and he killed Danny. I think I would have been more satisfied if he was in jail, have him rot in prison.” Syd said.
“I wish I could have taken that day back, I wish I never told Danny the truth, I just wish this was all a bad dream and I could just wake up from it, you know?” Syd said. Vaughn nodded.
“Yeah.” He said. There was silence.
“So you like hockey?” Syd asked. Vaughn looked at her.
“Yeah, I’ve been playing since I was 4.” Vaughn said.
“Really? That young?” Syd asked.
“Yeah, no one knows this but uh, before being recruited I tried out for a minor league team, actually made it, but uh, the CIA came to me and said that I got in. So I knew which job was more important.” Vaughn said.
“Wow, so my handler could have been a star athlete.” Syd said.
“I know a celebrity.” She said. Vaughn laughed.
“No, but I do play on my free time, it’s my getaway.” Vaughn said.
“When I need to get away I usually go to the Santa Monica Pier, or the train station, sometimes I just go to watch people. You know, normal people going to their normal jobs.” Syd said.
“Well we’re far from normal.” Vaughn said.
“We? Hey at least you have one job, I’m a double, and it sucks already.” Syd said. Vaughn laughed.
“So what’s your favorite team?” Syd asked.
“The Kings, have been ever since I grew up.” Vaughn said.
“Really, I always liked the Chicago Blackhawks.” Syd said.
“Wait, you like hockey?” Vaughn asked.
“Well, kind of, I’ve seen it before. I shouldn’t say I like any team, I usually cheer for the team that’s winning.” Syd said.
“Yeah, well then we have to go to a Kings game, you’ll shed that habit real fast. It’s different to see it in person.” Vaughn said. Sydney smiled.
“I might have to hold you to that.” Syd said.
“Yeah, once SD-6 is gone.” Vaughn said. Sydney looked down.
“Right.” She said.
“So, what’s your favorite movie?” Vaughn asked.
“Uh, you’ll laugh.” Syd said.
“Don’t tell me, Sleepless in Seattle?” Vaughn asked.
“No, but that was a good movie.” Syd said.
“Come on tell me?” Vaughn pleaded.
“Promise you won’t laugh?” Syd asked.
“I promise you, I will not laugh, make fun of, or insult your all time favorite movie even if it is the little mermaid, if I do you can kick my a**…again” Vaughn said. Sydney laughed.
“Indian Jones.” Syd said under her breath.
“What?” Vaughn asked.
“Fine okay, I like Indian Jones.” Syd said. Vaughn nodded.
“You’re not going to laugh at me?” Syd asked.
“I promised you I wouldn’t, I don’t break my promises.” Vaughn said. Sydney smiled.
“Okay, your turn, all time favorite movie.” Syd said.
“The mighty ducks?” Syd asked.
“No, but not a bad guess. My favorite movie of all time is star wars.” Vaughn said.
“Star Wars? Really? I would take you to be more of a Cops and Robbers kind of guy more than science fiction.” Syd said.
“Nope, well yeah, I like action movies but Star Wars is one of the best.” He said.
“So is Indian Jones.” He added looking at her. She smiled. ‘Can those Dimples get any cuter?’ he thought
“Favorite color?” He asked.
“At the moment? Blue.” She said. ‘I think that’s about to change, gosh I love his eyes, I think green is now my favorite color.’ She thought.
“Yours?” She asked.
“Orange.” He said. ‘Vaughn what are you doing? This is your asset, you cant have a crush on your asset, Protocol, just remember protocol.’ She smiles a full smile again. ‘Screw Protocol, it’s just a crush.’
“Orange?” Sydney asked.
“Yep, and I have no idea why.” He said.
“If you were to move to a different country where would you move?” Syd asked. ‘Gosh I love his smile. Stop it! he’s your handler, your boss, stop flirting with him.’
“France.” Vaughn said.
“I grew up there, and it’s such a beautiful country, the mountains, the sky, he** even the smell. It’s just so great out there. You can get away from the rest of the world.” He said. ‘Did he just say Beautiful, have I ever heard I guy say beautiful?’
“What about you?” he asked.
“I was going to say the Caribbean’s, but I think you convinced me to move to France.” Syd said. Vaughn smiled.
“You grew up in France?” Syd asked.
“Yeah my father was American and my mother is French. I moved here when I was 6.” Vaughn said.
“So you know French?” Syd asked.
“Plus ou moins.” He said. (More or less) She smiled. ‘French, not a bad thing.’
“And you speak 9 different languages which totally makes me look like a moron.” He said. She laughed. All of a sudden her cell phone rang. She looked at the caller ID.
“Hold on a second.” She said.
“Hello?” She answered.
“Syd where the hell are you? You’ve been gone for an hour and a half.” Fran said.
“Sorry Francie, I just…I ran into a friend from work, he asked me to go get some coffee and we’re catching up.” Syd said.
“Oh, a guy is it? So what’s his name?” Fran asked. Vaughn saw Sydney blush a little.
“I’ll tell you later.” Syd said.
“Okay, and don’t forget the ice cream.” Fran said.
“I’ll pick up the ice cream.” Syd said.
“Bye.”
“Bye.” Syd said. She hung up.
“Sorry.” Syd said.
“Francie?” Vaughn asked.
“Yeah, she’s my best friend, she’s been living with me for a while, her and my other friend Will.” Syd said. Vaughn nodded.
“They don’t know about you?” Vaughn asked.
“No.” Syd said.
“Don’t you get tired of lying to them?” He asked.
“Well I didn’t lie to her just now.” Syd said.
“Just about the coffee part.” Syd said.
“And what about the friends part?” Vaughn asked. Both of their smiles diminished, they both got serious.
“Just the coffee part.” Syd confirmed again. Vaughn smiled faintly. She did to.
“Well, I should let you get back to Francie.” Vaughn said.
“Yeah.” She said. She was kind of disappointed that Francie had called, she didn’t want to leave. She got up and put on her coat. Vaughn stood there.
“Vaughn.” Syd said. He looked up.
“Thank you.” Syd said.
“For what?” He asked smiling. ‘Is he just playing with me? Maybe not, maybe he thinks he didn’t do anything for me.’
“For understanding, and listening.” Syd said. He nodded.
“No ones done that for me in a long time.” She said. There was a slight pause.
“Anytime.” He said. She smiled and grabbed her keys off the table. She walked over to him.
“I’ll talk to you soon.” Syd said. She touched his arm and then walked away.
“Stay safe.” He yelled to her as she walked down the hallway. She turned to look at him and just smiled. He watched her until she was gone.
‘It’s just a crush, you’ll get over it.’
Sydney walked out to her car and got in, she glanced at the green Buick as she drove off.
‘Damn i like the color green.’
