Interesting Lunch...
Wait they didn't even get to the food...
I can't believe that Syd forgot to tell them about
Micheal's foot.

Chapter 16
The rest of lunch with Sydney’s parents actually went surprisingly well (considering how it started). Sydney didn’t say much but Michael was able to carry on a fairly good conversation with her parents until they left, at which point he turned on Sydney, knowing they’d most likely fight the whole way home. “You didn’t tell them?” he questioned immediately after they were in the car.

“Oh my god, Michael, I swear, I swear I forgot. I mean, it’s not like it’s my common introduction. ‘Oh, do you know my boyfriend Michael, he’s missing a leg’,” she mocked herself. “I don’t say that; I don’t think that! I don’t even notice it anymore so I just… I don’t know I figured they already knew. I forgot that I didn’t tell them and I’m so, so, so, so sorry!”

He sighed and looked over at her, still looking slightly unsure. “Michael, I am sorry,” she repeated once more, with even more sincerity.

“You really forgot?” he asked.

“Yes, of course! Why? What did you think…?” she asked. He just looked away. “Michael,” she said seriously.

“I dunno,” he mumbled. “That maybe you were…”

“Ashamed?” she finished, her heart falling into her stomach. He grumbled and nodded his head slightly. “Michael no, never. In fact, it’s the opposite. I brag about you to all the other surgeons.”

He looked up at her ever so slightly. “You do?”

“Yes, of course!” she smiled. “I just… I talk about you all the time because you are so great and you’ve made so much remarkable progress against… everything! Do you know how amazing you are?” she asked him.

“Well, you do say it a lot…,” he said casually.

“Because it’s true! You inspire everyone Michael, even me,” she told him sincerely.

While her words touched him deeply, he was still slightly upset with her. “Well thank you, but you’re parents sill should have known… I mean, when your mother fainted I nearly had a heart attack!”

“I know!” she cringed. “I had no idea she’d faint!”

“Well, that tends to happen when you see someone remove their leg,” he groaned.

“Well…yeah…,” she sighed. “But they seemed cool with it… I mean, it’s no big deal, right?”

“Right,” he sighed. “I just…”

“I know, and I’m really, really sorry. I promise, I won’t forget to tell any other relatives about it… we can even put it on the invitations!” she exclaimed.

Michael looked over at her, wondering if she had actually meant what she implied, or even realized it, but she seemed unfazed so he let it slide. “Alright,” he sighed. “It’s just… it’s something I worry about, you know? People not accepting me because I’m a freak.”

“You are not a freak,” she assured him. He looked wary. “You’re not! Jeez Michael, it’s not like you have an arm growing out of your forehead. Then you’d kinda be a freak.”

He couldn’t help but laugh softly at this. “Yeah…”

“But what about…. What about if I have kids, you know? They’re going to think Daddy’s a freak,” he sighed.

“They absolutely will not,” she told him. “They’re going to love you so much because you’re going to be an awesome Dad.”

“Thanks Syd,” he smiled softly at her.

“No problem,” she smiled back.

~*~

The next week, on Valentines Day, Sydney was having an unusually horrible day after a few less than thrilling phone calls and a bad surgery where she was trying to remove a cancerous lump from a woman only to find much more cancer, since it had spread. To make the day even worse, she was feeling particularly PMSy and basically just wanted to go home and sleep. Michael, not even knowing about the bad day, but knowing about the PMS, decided to cheer her up by bringing a dozen roses to her at the hospital.

When he arrived, she was in a meeting, so he waited in her office for over forty minutes before she walked in looking rather frazzled. But the moment she looked up and saw him, roses in his arms, she dropped the clipboard she was holding. “Happy Valentines Day, Beautiful,” he grinned.

She brought both her hands up to her cheeks and giggled slightly. “Oh my god,” she sighed as she walked over to him. He kissed her softly and gave her a one armed hug (since the other held the roses). “God, I’ve just had the worst day and you just made it so much better. Thank you,” she said, tears in her voice.

“Syd,” he laughed softly. “Babe, what happened?”

“Oh, too long of a story… I’ll tell you later, okay? Because I have to go… but I love you so much,” she told him with another kiss. “You can leave those there though,” she gestured to the roses and then her desk. “Thank you!”

“Of course,” he smiled. “By the way – you look really sexy in that white coat,” he winked. She laughed, blew him a kiss and then headed off to scrub into another surgery, permanent smile across her face.

Later on, after her surgery was completed, Sydney was in the doctor’s locker room changing her clothes after showering when she overheard two new interns speaking.

“Did you see that cute guy come in with the roses earlier?” a girl with a very high-pitched voice asked.

“Yeah, that’s Doctor Bristow’s boyfriend,” the other girl said.

“Oh,” the high pitched girl said sadly. “The one without the leg? That’s too bad… he was hot, but he’s like deformed!” she said with a laugh. Sydney nearly died.

“Oh I know, right? It’s such a tragedy,” the other girl said.

“Yeah… I wonder why she’s with him… I mean, do you think she pities him or something?” the high-pitched girl asked.

“Definitely,” the other girl said. “Didn’t you know that she was the one who cut off his leg?”

“NO WAY!” she gasped.

“Yeah, totally.”

“Then no wonder she’s with him,” the high-pitched girl sighed.

Sydney had heard enough. She grabbed her things and slammed her locker shut, making sure to give the girls a death glare as she walked past them on her way out of the locker room. Then, for the rest of the day, she felt completely and totally sick about what they had said.
