Terrence Howard in “Hustle & Flow”
Heath Ledger in “Brokeback Mountain”

Jake Gyllenhaal in “Brokeback Mountain” 2nd choice

Performance by an actress in a leading role

Original screenplay
“Crash” I'm really pulling for this one since out of all the scripts it was original and had a lot of subplots to juggle.

Story by Paul Haggis
“Good Night, and Good Luck.” 2nd choice
Screenplay by George Clooney & Grant Heslov

I'm definitely rooting for Brokeback...but I guess I should probably hold off on my picks until I actually see the movie :P (which will thankfully be tomorrow evening).

I will also say that I think George Clooney has an excellent chance of taking home at least one Oscar, and I would certainly not rule out Terrence Howard for best actor. He was incredible in Hustle & Flow.

Keira Knightley's nom for best actress was the only wtf moment, other than that there were no surprises.

Alright, here are my picks:

Performance by an actor in a leading role
Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote”
Terrence Howard in “Hustle & Flow”
Heath Ledger in “Brokeback Mountain”
Joaquin Phoenix in “Walk the Line”
David Strathairn in “Good Night, and Good Luck”

I have them all bolded because quite honestly I just can't pick. Heath Ledger was amazing in Brokeback, but I have also heard equally good things about Philip Seymour Hoffman and Joaquin Phoenix. I think it's going to be a close one between those three. I wouldn't rule out Terrence Howard though, he was superb in Hustle & Flow. While I heard great things about David Strathairn, I'm not sure he's going to be able to compete with the other nominees.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
George Clooney in “Syriana”
Matt Dillon in “Crash"
Paul Giamatti in “Cinderella Man”
Jake Gyllenhaal in “Brokeback Mountain”
William Hurt in “A History of Violence

I think George Clooney is going to get it...this has been a good year for him. But, I must say that I was wildly impressed with my Jakey-poo in Brokeback. And even though I do have a bias towards him, I do feel that he did a great job. I enjoyed Crash, and thought that it was an amazing movie, but I've never been a Matt Dillion fan, so he didn't impress me too much (once again there's a bias). Also wouldn't rule out Paul Giamatti.

Performance by an actress in a leading role
Judi Dench in “Mrs. Henderson Presents”
Felicity Huffman in “Transamerica”
Keira Knightley in “Pride & Prejudice”
Charlize Theron in “North Country”
Reese Witherspoon in “Walk the Line”

Once again, I really just can't pick one. I'm leaning towards Felicity Huffman because of the challenge in her role, and I've just read great things about her. Then again Reese Witherspoon has really surprised critics and impressed them. I'm going to be able to see Walk the Line in a couple weeks, so then I'll have a better feeling about her role. I like Keira Knightley, but didn't see the movie and it didn't receive wide critical acclaim. I adore Charlize Theron, but once again this movie wasn't really talked about (and rather panned by critics).

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Amy Adams in “Junebug”
Catherine Keener in “Capote”
Frances McDormand in “North Country”
Rachel Weisz in “The Constant Gardener”
Michelle Williams in “Brokeback Mountain

This is a hard one too. I loved Michelle Williams in Brokeback Mountain, she gave a great and heartbreaking preformance. But Rachel Weisz was also supposed to be brilliant in The Constant Gardener (another movie which I'll be seeing in the next week or so). I think it's going to go to one of those two. But I wouldn't rule out Catherine Keener or Amy Adams. I'm not sure about Frances McDormand.

Best animated feature film of the year
“Howl’s Moving Castle”-Hayao Miyazaki
“Tim Burton’s Corpse Bride”-Tim Burton and Mike Johnson
“Wallace & Gromit in the Curse of the Were-Rabbit”-Nick Park and Steve Box

I gotta go with Wallace and Gromit. I've been a huge fan since I was a little kid, and I would love to see them win. So, very biased, but I do think they're deserving. Though I do like Tim Burton movies for the most part (but haven't seen Corpse Bride).

Achievement in directing
“Brokeback Mountain”-Ang Lee
“Capote”-Bennett Miller
“Crash”-Paul Haggis
“Good Night, and Good Luck”-George Clooney
“Munich”-Steven Spielberg

Ugh...so many good movies/directors. Alright, my favorite is Ang Lee. The movie was shot brilliantly and I just think he is very deserving. But I also think Crash was extremely well done, so that could definitely pull through. And I think that if it were any other year, George Clooney would have more of a shot, but he's up against some big names. Don't think Steven Spielberg is going to get it. I've heard a lot of mixed things about Munich, and I'm just not thinking he'll win for this one.

Best documentary feature

“Darwin’s Nightmare”
A Mille et Une Production
Hubert Sauper
“Enron: The Smartest Guys in the Room”
An HDNet Films Production
Alex Gibney and Jason Kliot
“March of the Penguins”
A Bonne Pioche Production
Luc Jacquet and Yves Darondeau
“Murderball”
An Eat Films Production
Henry-Alex Rubin and Dana Adam Shapiro
“Street Fight”
A Marshall Curry Production
Marshall Curry

The three bolded ones are the ones I personally know of and therefore think have the best shot. I think it'll probably go to March of the Penguins, although Muderball was excellent and same with Enron, so we'll see.

Achievement in music written for motion pictures (Original song)
“In the Deep” from “Crash”
Music by Kathleen “Bird” York and Michael Becker
Lyric by Kathleen “Bird” York
“It’s Hard Out Here for a Pimp” from“Hustle & Flow”
Music and Lyric by Jordan Houston, Cedric Coleman and Paul Beauregard
“Travelin’ Thru” from “Transamerica”
Music and Lyric by Dolly Parton

I'm excited to see It's Hard Out Here for a Pimp preformed on stage given it's profanity, but I really would like to see it win. I'm not the biggest rap fan in the world, I'll listen to it every now and then, but this song really stuck with me. Plus it fit the story of the movie so perfectly.

Best motion picture of the year
“Brokeback Mountain”
“Capote”
“Crash”
“Good Night, and Good Luck”
“Munich”

Another very hard one. I guess I'll start by eliminating some first. I don't think Munich is going to get it. I haven't seen it so I can't really back that up, but just a feeling I have. Good Night, and Good Luck was supposed to be amazing, but I don't think it'll win, it's up against some very tough competition. Capote definitely has a chance, but I'm not sure. Crash was excellent, but it was no Brokeback Mountain. My pick would be Brokeback. The only way I can see this not winning would be if the Academy deemed it too "controversial" which would be ridiculous and I don't really see that happening, so I'm expecting a Brokeback win.

Adapted screenplay
“Brokeback Mountain”
“Capote”
“The Constant Gardener”
“A History of Violence”
“Munich”

This wasn't that hard. Brokeback deserves it. They were able to turn an 18 page short story into a beautiful 2 hour movie. I don't think this is too much of a contest.

Original screenplay
“Crash”
“Good Night, and Good Luck.”
“Match Point”
“Syriana"

I was rather surprised that Syriana was in Original screenplay, given that it's based on a book. Anyways, I think the award is either going to go to Crash or Good Night, and Good Luck. I'm leaning towards Crash though, but if anything gives it a run for it's money it will be Good Night, and Good Luck.

Despite my picks I do think that brokeback has a the best chance and I only have a little bit of doubt because with the exception of Ang Lee's win, it didn't take any awards home at the SAG awards which did surprise me.

How the frack did Keira Knightley get an Oscar nomination and Ziyi Zhang did not for Memoirs of a Geisha. ZZ was amazing in that. Absolute bollocks. Yes i loved Pride and Prejudice and i believe KK did a fantastic job but she was blatently only nominated as a play to draft in the younger crew. Have you seen her act??? Apart from Pand P she can't act for felgercarb....especially in Domino. Wanted to blow my brains out when watching that.

I don't understand what you mean by "younger crew" ZZ is only 26. I agree that she deserved a nomination. I was very surprised that she wasn't nominated nor was her movie for best picture. In my opinion that is my biggest dissappointment because I loved the movie.

As far as KK being nominated, it you look back at previous nominations, the Academy has a habit of nominating actresses for such roles. G. Paltrow for Emma, W. Ryder for Little Women and Emma Thomspon for Sense and Sensibility.

Performance by an actor in a leading role
Philip Seymour Hoffman in “Capote”
Joaquin Phoenix in “Walk the Line”

I think it's a tight race between Philip and Joaquin i want Joaquin to win but i think Philip might have a slightly bigger chance.

Performance by an actor in a supporting role
George Clooney in “Syriana”
Paul Giamatti in “Cinderella Man”

I love George and i hope he wins but Paul has a chance there too

Performance by an actress in a leading role
Felicity Huffman in “Transamerica”
Reese Witherspoon in “Walk the Line”

I think it'll be tight between Reee and Felicity ilove them both i think Reese might have like a little bit of a bigger chanceover Felicity but it wouldn't shock me if Felicity took it and i love Charlize Theron and North Country looked like an amazing movie but this isn't her year

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Rachel Weisz in “The Constant Gardener”

I think it's a definite for Rachel i saw the constant gardener last weekend and it was awesome.
I don't think any of the other supporting actresses are even gonna touch her in this one.

I can't wait i'm so excited but i was really shocked when Keira Knightly god nominated i didn't think she really deserved it she knoecked out Ziyi Zhang and even thought Ziyi owu'dn't have one she deserved the nomination. I was just like :wtf: when i heard that i was just like Ziyi deserved the nom more than her.

Performance by an actress in a supporting role
Rachel Weisz in “The Constant Gardener”

I think it's a definite for Rachel i saw the constant gardener last weekend and it was awesome.
I don't think any of the other supporting actresses are even gonna touch her in this one.

I just watched The Constant Gardener last night and was completely underwhelmed. It was so slow and unimpressive. While I didn't enjoy the movie (though I feel that the premise was interesting/believable and a lot more could've been done with it), I do think that Rachel Weisz deserves some credit. Although, I don't think her role was anywhere near as good as Michelle William's. So while I still think it'll be close, I'm going to go with Michelle on this one.

So, I just went and saw Walk the Line on campus with my boyfriend.

It was extremely good, and this is coming from someone who isn't a Johnny Cash fan...though I have nothing against him, just not really my kind of music.

The acting was very impressive. Both Reese and Joaquin had incredible performances. Which were made even more incredible given the fact that they did their own singing. Both have really nice singing voices.

While I do still think the best male actor race will be down to the wire, I'm still leaning with Heath Ledger. I think Joaquin was amazing, but I feel Heath's role was harder to do and he just was breathless in it.

That being said, I'm going with Reese for best actress. She was amazing as June Carter-Cash. I've always liked her in her comedic roles, but it was so nice to see her make the jump into drama. She has proven that she is certainly a serious actress. She's definitely the one to beat in my book (y)

I tend to go the actress that just goes for it and immerses herself into the role and so far, the academy and I have agreed for the last few years. So, I have to go for Felicity because to me, her part seemed more challenging since she is portraying a pre-op transsexual. I mean, she even said herself that there was nowhere for her to pull from for this part but she was amazing. She wasn't playing the part of Bree, she was Bree. From the mannerisms, down to the voice. The part had to be done exactly or else it would have been a total joke and after watching her excellent performance, I can't envision another actress in that role.

Well, I'm not going to say what my favorite part of the evening was since I know that I'll get pelted by rotten fruit and vegetables lol But I thought Jon Stewart did a good job, he seemed a bit nervous but he was fine for the rest of the show. I loved his montage of American Westerns with suggestive editing  His mudslinging ads were good too. And I agreed with him about Three-Six mafia being the most excited to win. Now that was a shocker! With exception of Reese, George and Phillip no one else seemed that thrilled.

Personally, I don't mind the winners, I loved Crash and Brokeback. To me it was shocking but not an upset. If Munich won, then I would have considered that an upset since it would have basically gotten it because of Spielberg. Ang Lee was shocked too but hey, he's going home with an Oscar so I don't think he's that torn up. Reese was great in Walk the Line but I was pulling for Felicity, her time will come though, just like Morgan Freeman's did last year. Reese's speech was sweet and heart felt, good for her! :D I love George Clooney, so snaps for his win.

I liked how Jake Gyllenhaal came up on stage to congratulate Jon on a job well done. Although I'm pretty sure the Gyllenhaal clan are huge Jon Stewart and Daily show fans.

Make sure to catch Oprah tomorow for her post Oscar show where she'll interview Jon and the winners too! Along with all the entertainment shows like ET, Extra and Access Hollywood.

You know what, I agree with most of the winners... I probably shouldn't be in here reading through since it hasn't even aired in Australia yet  But I couldn't help myself...

Congratumalayshans to the winners! :woot:

The right people/movies won though I'm sure that there will be some complaints about Crash taking the best picture instead of Brokeback Mountain.

I'm so happy that Reese, Rachel and Philip won! I was rooting for them and Reese gave such a cute acceptance speech. It made me love her even more. I was a bit disappointed that Philip didn't bark through his speech :D

I didn't actually like Jon Stewart. You could see he was really nervous and unfortunately the crowd didn't get his jokes.. I was really hoping he would do great.. Poor guy! I loved the beginning with Billy Crystal and Chris Rock, hilarious

And how about Jennifer Garner almost wiping out on stage when she came out to present an award.... OMG.... and BTW -- she looked GREAT... wow.....

Jennifer presented? and i MISSED it? darn. but i'm really happy that Reese took home Best Actress because i thought her performance in Walk the Line was wonderful. Tops to all the winners! ^_^
