As much as I liked Francie, it seemed like there wasn't a lot for her to do. Turning her into a double sort of gave her a limited life span because everyone really wanted to see her killed off--as in really wanted to see her killed off! So, in the long run, I think it works out for the best. It frees up time for the other characters. And (wah!) with Irina only showing up for a few episodes, there'll be even more time freed up for the rest of the cast (but hopefully lower quantity will translate to higher quality!).
