What's Left of Me

That will be a wonderful gift.
It was also a good Sydney/Emily project and bonding time.

I wonder if Amelia or Bill will make Michael understand that he needs to make Sydney a permanent part of the family by proposing.

By the way, please put more of this at OI.

Awwww....I <3 Amelia. She HAS been a good presence. Now, Amelia, sit down and talk to your son about marriage! YAAAY!

I love this! Wonderful, wonderful job.

Chapter 25

By the time the day before Michael’s birthday arrived he was practically beside himself, wondering what Sydney had been up to for the prior two weeks. Thanksgiving had been the previous day and Michael and Emily had spent it with his parent’s while Sydney spent it with her own family. On Friday, though, began Sydney’s and Emily’s planned birthday extravaganza. Michael knew nothing about it, except that Sydney and Emily would be planning the entire day Friday (Sydney would be baby sitting since Michael had to work, but she had no school) and that their celebration would continue on into Saturday morning, his actual birthday. Because of being kept in the dark, Michael could barely focus on his work that day and practically looked at the clock every other second between four thirty and five, waiting until he could go home.

At five forty-five, Michael cursed as he pulled his car into the garage. It had taken him an extra twenty minutes to get home because of an accident on the highway, but finally, he had arrived and he was ready for his birthday to begin. Normally he wasn’t overly thrilled about turning a year older, especially since that meant he was inching his way closer to that ‘four-oh’ mark (even if it was still eight years away), but that year he was very excited and he knew it was all to do with Sydney.

Michael walked quickly into the house, half-expecting it to be dripping from floor to ceiling with streamers, colored paper, balloons or something, but instead he found nothing, not one thing, out of the ordinary. Sydney was in the kitchen stirring a pot on the stove and Emily was running to greet him. “Hi Daddy!” she said as she tackled him around the knees.

“Hello…,” he said slowly, his tone very suspicious.

“Hi honey, how was work?” Sydney asked, only tearing her eyes away from the stove for a moment to make sure none of the pots boiled over.

“Who are you people?!?!?!?!” he shouted in a frustrated manner.

“What are you talking about?” Sydney laughed.

“YOU! You two have been sneaking around my back for two weeks and I want some answers!!!”

“Daddy ‘snot your birthday yet,” Emily grinned up at him.

Sydney walked over to him and kissed him sweetly. “You’re so adorable when you’re frustrated. Your forehead gets all wrinkly,” she pointed out. He growled at her and she backed away with a laugh. “Patience, my dear, patience.”

“I don’t have patience,” he responded.

“Yes you do,” she told him, grin never leaving her face. “I’ve seen you have patience dozens of times you just don’t want to have patience for this – but you gotta.”

“Fine,” he grumbled. “I’m going to change…”

For the rest of the evening, Michael sulked. He wasn’t upset at the fact that Sydney and Emily were keeping their secret from him as much as he was upset at the fact that Sydney was gloating at the fact that he was annoyed by their secrecy. She smiled for the entire evening as the three of them sat on the couch watching TV. Occasionally, Michael would ask if he could have his birthday present, just testing to see if they’d give in, but Sydney and Emily took turns saying no.

Michael hadn’t even noticed that Emily was asleep by eight p.m. He was too busy trying to scan the room to find any signs of a hidden present. He was snapped from his thoughts when Sydney moved beside him. He turned his head to see her scooping up Emily, who was completely asleep, and carrying her out of the room. After a moment, Michael followed her down the hall to the bathroom and saw her trying to rouse Emily enough to brush her teeth. She managed to get her to stand up, though Sydney did most of the brushing before walking Emily, who was in a zombie-like state, back to her room. Michael hovered in the doorway, unnoticed by Sydney or Emily, as Sydney changed Emily into her pj’s, and tucked her in bed with a kiss on her forehead.

Before Sydney could catch him, Michael slipped back to the family room, feeling guilty about how childish he had been that entire evening. He had been searching for his present when, really, it was in front of him all along.

“Hey,” Sydney’s soft voice from the doorway pulled him from his self-scolding. He looked over to her and she continued, “Give me ten minutes and then meet me in the bedroom.”

His brow furrowed, wondering what she was up to this time, and she laughed softly, “You’ll see.”

For ten minutes Michael busied himself straightening up the family room, putting away Emily’s books and toys, and then checking the kitchen to make sure no food was left out and that the stove was off. Once ten minutes had passed, he walked slowly back to his bedroom and slipped inside, making sure to lock the door behind him, before looking around the room. When he finally observed his surroundings though, his jaw dropped.

Sydney had filled the room with a dozen candles, illuminating the small space with a soft glow. Rose petals were sprinkled lightly across the pillows and, standing beside the bed wearing a red silk nightgown trimmed in black lace that fell agonizingly high on her thigh, was Sydney. She approached him slowly and, when she reached his side, wrapped her arms around his neck, giving him a long, sense-shattering kiss. “Happy birthday,” she said softly against his lips.

“This,” Michael began, though his voice was a mere croak. “This is a g-good surprise.”

Sydney laughed softly, shaking her head. “This isn’t the surprise I’ve been planning.”

“It’s still good,” he mumbled before kissing her.

The following morning, Sydney awoke early and slipped from Michael’s warm embrace. Thankfully he didn’t wake and she dressed quickly in a more appropriate, less sexy version of pajamas before tip-toeing across the hall to wake Emily. Once up, the two of them set to work on preparing Michael’s favorite breakfast – chocolate chip pancakes – for his birthday celebration. Sydney let Emily stir the batter a few times before taking over herself and finishing the mixing so the pancakes could be cooked.

As Sydney was cooking the pancakes, Emily was waiting impatiently, eager to see her father’s reaction to the present she and Sydney had created. Once the pancakes were ready, Sydney placed them on a plate along with a chunk of butter and some syrup. Then, she placed the plate onto a tray, which she found stashed in one of Michael’s cabinets and, beside that, she placed the bag containing his present.

Finally, it was time for Emily’s part of the birthday morning. With Sydney behind her, she bounded into her father’s room, pouncing on the bed and waking him up with a shout, “Happy Birthday Daddy!”

It appeared Michael had been waiting for this, since Sydney tipped him off the night before that he might want to put his boxers back on before falling asleep. He sat up slowly and pulled Emily into his arms, tickling her. “Why, thank you Sweetie – what’s this?” he laughed when he saw Sydney and the tray she had.

“We made you breakfast,” Sydney said.

“In bed!” Emily chimed in.

“Well, aren’t you two just the sweetest,” Michael smiled at them.

He was about to dig into his pancakes when Emily said, “Open your present first, Daddy!”

“Okay, okay,” he laughed. Sydney curled up on the bed with one arm around Emily as they both watched him dig his hand down into the blue gift bag on the tray. When his hand came in contact with a tissue wrapped hard surface, his brow furrowed as he pulled it out. Carefully, he unwrapped it and turned it over. When he saw his daughter’s tiny handprint surrounded by pictures of her growing up, he gasped softly.

“Look Daddy it’s my hand – see!” Emily said as she put her right hand down overtop of the cement indention of it.

“I see…,” Michael said softly.

“There’s another one too,” Sydney informed him.

Michael reached for it immediately and unwrapped it before setting the two handprints side by side. He stared down at them, amazed at the best gift he had ever received. “Do you like them, Daddy?” Emily asked.

Michael leaned forward and pulled her into a tight hug, “I love them sweetie, I love them so much,” he said. “Thank you.” Then, he turned to Sydney and kissed her, thanking her as well. He sat back against the headboard of his bed, staring at the pictures that had obviously been taken by Sydney. He scanned each one and saw that they were only of Emily, though he wished one had been included with Emily and Sydney together.

Glancing up at the two ladies, who were sitting on the end of the bed smiling at each other and laughing about something, Michael heart fluttered and he could no longer hold back the few tears that had formed in his eyes at the sight of his present. He knew then, without any doubt, that he had found the perfect mother for his precious little girl.
