~ Part 20~

Michael woke up late that night with Sydney on his mind. Again. It was getting to be a habit of is.

“And why not? She’s a smart , intelligence and a beautiful woman.” he muttered to himself, sitting halfway to gaze out the windows by his bed. Plenty of stars this evening. He wondered if Sydney had see them or if she was asleep. For one crazy moment he considered tapping on her door and inviting her out onto the lawn to lie back and count the constellations the way they had once on one long distant night before.

“Hell Vaughn. Give it a rest, “he said, falling back against the pillows. You said you were giving her some time to think.

Maybe it was this morning at the museum, the utter rightness of the situation. A man, a woman, a child, and none of the complications they’ve had since they first arrived at the house.

She was a person who was kind to his mother and she tolerated his brother’s bad moods. Her needs were simple: room and freedom for her son, her own escape from her lovelorn boss’s pursuit.

There was something else about Sydney, too.

He desired her. Completely. Constantly.

Sydney rose later than usual the day of the party and found that a maid had already taken her son downstairs to feed him. What kind of mother did that? Ordinarily Dylan never woke up without her hearing him, but lately she hadn’t been sleeping. It was as if she guarded herself against getting too entangled with Michael, even in her dreams.

“Michael.” she mumbled to herself as she sat by the window and watched the people putting the last minute touches to the party. She has to give an answer tonight. She still wasn’t sure what she would say to him. She wanted to be with him, there was no denying that, but they came from two different worlds: she, the poor maid’s daughter and he, the heir of a massive family fortune. Could they really be together? Could they really make this work? Perhaps she should spend the day in her room. With all the preparations going on, she might not be missed.

But as she passed the parlor on the way to the breakfast table, Sydney heard the sound of laughter. She stuck her head in the doorway and saw Amelia sitting on the sofa watching Dylan and Michael and Brian playing together. Brian looked up at that moment from a tall structure he had made with blocks, and she noted for the first time that when he smiled he looked practically boyish. How often did he smile? She wondered.

As for Michael, he was kneeling on the floor, his attention centered on guiding Dylan’s little fingers in fastening two blocks together. Her son made the connection with Michael’s help, then looked at the man who had been so patient with him.

“You’re pretty good at this, little man, “Michael said. “This building you and Brian are making is a beaut.”

“Boot?” Dylan repeated giggling

“Absolutely, “Michael agreed. And as if he had felt her presence, he looked up just then. His sleeves were pushed up to the elbows, showing firm muscles and tanned skin. His hair in a tangled mess that made her want to kneel down and run her fingers through it.

He smiled suddenly. “Ah, we’ve been caught Dylan, my boy. There’s mommy. See?”

Dylan turned in a rush with a smile on his face. “Mommy. Toys.”

“I see, “she said. “Different one than you’ve been playing with too. Michael, you didn’t…”

Amelia chuckled. “No, they were Michael’s. I sent him up to the attic this morning with Brian and they came back down with those. I didn’t think you would mind.”

Michael tossed a block in the air and caught it with a shrug. “Everyone else is getting a little excitement with the party going on. We just thought maybe Dylan could use something to bright up his day, too. Besides, Brian and I used to have fun playing with these, and you can never have too many toys.”

“Maybe, but I don’t want him to get spoiled,” Sydney said.

Michael cocked his left eyebrow.” He’s not spoiled, Syd.”

No, he wasn’t, and right now Dylan was beaming. He sat down in the middle of the pile of blocks and the wooden train set and simply looked happy gazing at all the toys and the two men who took care of him.

“And he’s not hurting anything, “Michael added. “If these were breakable, Brian and I would have wrecked them long ago, but I suppose I should have asked your permission.”

“No, I’m sorry. I’m grateful, “she said softly. “How can I be mad at you when my son is clearly enjoying himself playing with all that stuff.”

“So we’re good then?” he asked as she nodded.

“Yeah, we’re good.” she smiled.

Hours later, Sydney opened the door to find Michael waiting to escort her downstairs for the celebration. She’d already tucked Dylan into his bed.

“You look exquisite, “he said, standing back to look at her knee length strapless black dress. “Beautiful.”

No little girl shirt with dirt on her chin, a Wonder Woman T-shirt and skinned knee tonight, eh, Syd? Although that look was just as impressive in its own way.”

She looked up into his emerald green eyes that always made her feel as if he saw beyond the outfit to her soul. Even when they had been very young, Michael had noticed too much.

“I’m a different person than I was then, “she said softly. “And so are you.”

“Yes, “he said. “No more superhero stuff for me, either. “She could have argued that point, because he was very much mistaken, but this was a night for celebrating, not debating.

“I hope your mother has a wonderful birthday. I understand that even more relatives showed up today.”

“Yes, the Vaughns come out of the woodwork for this annual event. Unfortunately some of them come for less than noble reasons, mostly to catch up on the family gossip. Brian and I don’t make it easy for our mother. She would love to be able to tell everyone she was expecting a grandchild.”

His deep voice resonated through her, and Sydney found she couldn’t stop looking into his eyes. Her heart pounded too hard when she was this close to him. Her thoughts ceased to make sense. She was far too aware of herself as a woman and of Michael as a man. Especially tonight, when she would tell him that she loved him more than anything in this world.

Sydney pushed her shoulders back. “Shall we get to it?”

He chuckled. “We’re not going into battle, Syd.”

“No? she asked with a laugh “Don’t tell me that those curious relatives you spoke of won’t be looking at me like I’m from a different planet or something. For your mother’s sake, I just don’t want to embarrass her or you.”

He ran one long finger gently down her cheek. “You’re really not so different from that little girl, you know. Always putting everyone’s feelings first. What about what Sydney wants? Doesn‘t that matter?”

She opened her mouth to object, but he shook his head. “I admired you then for your ferocious tenacity and your spirit. I still do. You have fire in you, Syd. Wonderful fire. Let’s go show everyone what we’re made of, shall we?”

~ Part 21~

Everything was so beautiful, Sydney had to admit as they entered the ballroom. Amelia was glowing. The whole room was decorated with flowers and light. The night felt as if it were outlined in gold. Many nights from now she would remember the scent of the gardenias, the sparkle of crystal chandeliers, the frothy exotics gowns and the men in their white-on-white tuxes.

Michael insisted that Sydney join him and Brian in standing beside Amelia in the receiving line. She soon realized why as Michael deftly deflected all questions concerning their relationship, only telling everyone that Sydney was a very special friend of his. He beamed down at her each time, and Sydney wished she had a glass of water. The room seemed terribly warm. She felt sick to her stomach.

“You okay?” Michael asked as he saw Sydney wiped her forehead and trying to catch her breath.

“Yeah, I just need some fresh air. It‘s really warm in here.” she said making her way to the patio and leaving Michael to finish greeting the guests with his family.

A few minutes later, Michael disappeared from a moment and then led a string quartet to a corner of the room he had commandeered for that purpose.

Amelia turned to her son. “Music? And dancing? Oh, darling what a great idea.”

“Not my idea though, Mother, “Michael said. “Thank Sydney. She wanted you to dance.”

“Oh I’m too old and I don’t think I remember how.”

“Nonsense, mother, “Brian said, holding out his arms as the first strains of music flowed into the room.

“Let’s show them how it’s done, shall we?”

The two of them moved onto the floor. Michael went outside to see where Sydney was. He quickly found her sitting on one of the patio chairs and looking at the stars.

“Hey.” He said taking the seat beside her. “You okay?”

“Yeah, much better. It was just a little too warm inside and it also gave me a chance to think.

“And what have you been thinking about? Maybe I can help.”

“Us and how we can make this work since we’re definitely come from very different backgrounds.”

“Is that what’s bothering you? He turned and grabbed her hands in his. “The fact that I have money and you don’t?”

“That’s part of it.” she lowering her eyes to the ground.

“Don’t do this, Syd. Don’t shut me out. I think we could be great together and the money…well think of it as an added bonus.”

“It’s not easy. We’re so different, you and I. You have a wonderful family that loves you and I never really had that. Since my mother dies, I’ve tried to held my family together but in the end, I lost them all. I keep losing the people I love and what say, I won’t lose you too.”

“Hey,” he said lifting her chin with his fingers. “I told you, I’m not going anywhere.”

“You say that now, but what happens when someone better comes along.”

“Trust me, there’s isn’t anyone better for me out there.” he smiled.

“How do you know?”

“Because I love you and want to be with you forever, if you’ll have me.”

“Married? You want us to get married?”

“Someday, I do. I promised you that a long time ago. Remember?”

“Michael we were children when I made you promised that to me.”

“And yet, now I want to do just that.”

“Yesterday, you asked me a question.” she said looking into his eyes. “ I thought about it all night and I’m ready to give you my answer.”

“I’m listening.”

“First of all, I want you to know that I’m glad Dylan and I came here. Your family has been so amazing to us during this week. I’m so happy I got the chance to know them all.

She said taking a deep breath. “ I’ve been thinking a lot about you over the years. I know I got a glimpse of your life here and there, but I really got the chance to see the real you…and that made me fall in love with you all over again. I…

He touched her face with his fingers as he tried to pull her toward his waiting lips.” No wait, you have to let me finish. “I know that I’ve been a pain for pushing you away like I did in the last few days, but a big part of me is afraid of love. To love and to be love, but I know I have to stop running away from you because I don’t think my heart couldn’t bare to lose you again.” she said looking at his smiling face.

“Say something, please.” she begged.

“You love me?” he asked with a big smile on his face.

“Yes.” she said smiling back at him.

“I love you too, Sydney Anne Bristow.” he said, leaning in to capture her lips with his.

After a few minutes, he broke the kiss and got up on his feet. Hearing the music in the background, he held out his hand.

“Dance with me, “he said, sliding his hand to her waist, taking her into his arms and swaying her to the music.

“You’re crazy. Here?” she giggled as he pulled his arms tighter around her waist.

“I’ve been dying to dance with you all of my life.”

Sydney stumbled slightly. “I’m sorry. I told you that I wasn’t much of a dancer.’

But he only smiled, lifting her slightly off her feet and moving back into the rhythm of the dance.

“You’re many things, Syd, but never a quitter. Ignore your feet, angel . Just enjoy the music and move with me, “ and he pressed his palm more firmly to her, effortlessly guiding her through the steps. As if she didn’t have a choice, she followed his lead.

A thrill ran through her, “You’re pretty good at this dancing stuff, “she whispered.

“You can thank my mother for that.” He laughed. “ She forced Brian and I to take lessons hours on end to impress the high society girls but I think she selfishly did it because she didn’t want us to embarrass the hell out of her at parties. ”

“Well, it worked. I’m very impressed.” she looked up into his eyes as the view whooshed past in a blur. She wasn’t sure she heard the music anymore. The world was centered in Michael’s hands where he touched her, and in his eyes, which she could look away from. It was as if her feet had disappeared completely and she was simply light, floating in the arms of the man who held her.

All too soon the music slowed to a stop. Michael kissed her neck and whispered in her ear.

“The dress is driving me wild and so is the woman wearing it.”

“Your mother helped me pick it up.”

“All I can say is that my mother has great taste. That dress was made for you, Syd. You’re so beautiful.”

“Not to shabby yourself, Michael. “ She said placing her hands on his chest as he grabbed her hands and placed them over his heart. He leaned in to kiss again and were a breath apart when they heard someone clearing their throat behind them.

“Mike.” Weiss said, peaking his head onto the patio. Sorry to disturb you guys, but Brian is looking for you. Apparently it’s time for your speech.”

“Ah, I’ll be right there.” he said as his best friend nodded before closing the French door of the patio behind him.

“Are you going to be okay?” he asked brushing his fingers on the side of her face.

“Go. I’ll be fine. I just want to stay here a little bit longer.” she said as he kissed her quickly on the lips before making his way back to the ballroom in time for his mother’s birthday speech.

In the meantime, a woman came from behind the bushes and stopped to stand beside Sydney.

“Nice night, huh?” she asked, taking a deep breath as she stared a the view.

“Yes, it is. “she said turning to look at the woman.” I’m sorry have we met? I‘m Sydney.”

“I’m Danielle.” she said looking at Sydney up and down. “Michael and I used to be… close friends. I can’t see why he hasn’t returned my phone calls lately.”

“Excuse me?” Sydney asked, an angry look upon her face.

“Oh, didn’t Michael tell you? We’ve been dating on and off for the past few years. It seems I wasn’t go enough for his family since I can’t have children. All that matters to the Vaughns is to produce an heir to continue the line. You seem perfect for the job, since I noticed that you already have a child of your own.”

“They are not like that. This family cares about people. They welcomed Dylan and I with open arms and they’ve been nothing but nice to us for the past few days.”

“And why do you think that is?” Danielle said looking at Sydney. “Do you actually think they would accept a poor girl like you among them if there wasn’t an ulterior motive behind it?”

“You are just jealous because Michael decided to be with me instead of you.” she said angrily.

“Do you actually think that Amelia would let her son marry a girl like you if you couldn’t provide him with an heir. You’re smarter than that, Sydney. Think about it.”

“I have to go.” Sydney turned away from Danielle and wipe away her tears.

Sydney started running through the gardens and she didn’t stop until her lungs couldn’t let her continue anymore. She sat on the beach and stared at the ocean. She didn’t want to believe what that woman said but what is she was right and all they want from her is an heir. Should she stay or should she go?
