    Author: That would be me.
Spoilers: This is a AU future fic. I don’t think there’s much space for important spoilers, is there?
Rating: If I can write, you sure can read. ;) Alright, alright, PG.
    Genre: Fluff/Romance.
Disclaimer: You better sit down for this, ‘cause you just won’t believe on what I’m going to say. Ready? I… do… not… own… Alias! Yes, shocking, I know. ;) Who does? J.J, The Bad Robot (question: what made the Bad Robot turn bad? Family issues? Being picked last on gym class? Suffering prejudice for being the only robot on a humans school? Give it a guess!) and all those powerful guys.
Author’s Note: I felt like giving a break from all the angst of my other fic, and after watching ‘Where the Heart Is” and reading lots of cheap but cute novels *winks to Liv* I was inspired to write this. It might not be very good, but hey, what can I do? :P Read and review anyway. ;)

“Uncle Michael!” the squeal came from an unmistakable source. Vaughn’s face instantly lit up as he saw the small figure running in his direction.

“There’s my little girl!” he said, scooping her up and lifting her up in the air, before bringing her back down and hugging her tight. “I missed you.”

“I missed you too, Uncle Michael!” Ailish Bristow said, as she clung to Vaughn’s neck. “Mommy said she didn’t know if you’d come, but I told her, I told her you wouldn’t miss my birthday.”

“Of course I wouldn’t.” Vaughn said, kissing her cheek and putting her down.

“Did you bring me a gift?”

“What would you say if I told you I forgot it this year?”

Ailish looked disappointed for a moment, but quickly her cheerfulness returned.

“It’s ok, Uncle Michael. I don’t mind.” She said, and Vaughn knew she was not lying. It was simply her nature.

“So I guess you don’t want what I have there in the car, do you?”

Ailish became even more cheerful. She was, after all, just a child.

“You brought something? Can I go get it?” she asked. Vaughn seemed to be thinking. “Please?” Ailish added hopefully.

That please would have melted the coldest man alive.

    “Sure you can, honey.”

He didn’t need to say twice. Ailish ran to the car like a cannonball. Vaughn smiled, and turned to observe the party. There were many people, kids running all around him, laughing and squealing for reasons no adult could quite understand.

Jack Bristow was there, looking slightly bored as he talked to a woman Vaughn didn’t know. Eric was there as well, surrounded by eager children asking him to do it again, whatever ‘it’ was. Will was giving a bottle to his youngest boy. He didn’t see Sydney.

He made his way to the house. The inside, like the garden, was decorated with balloons – white and yellow balloons. Those were Ailish’s favorites colors. – and there were many guests there as well. Vaughn greeted the ones he knew, and climbed up the stairs.

He opened the door to Sydney’s bedroom, and just as he expected, found her there, seated in front of the vanity desk.

“Vaughn!” Sydney exclaimed as she looked up, and rushed to hug him.

Vaughn walked to her as well, and they met halfway.

“I thought you weren’t going to come.”

“So did I.” He said, with a half smile Sydney didn’t see, having her face buried on his neck, but felt, just as much as she felt his skin against hers.

They hesitantly let go of each other, but their hands remained intertwined. Neither of them noticed this fact.

“Running away from the party, uh?” Vaughn teased.

“Partially, yes.” Sydney admitted. “I came up because a kid spilled juice on my dress, but I’m taking much longer than people usually take to take off a dress and put on another one.”

    Vaughn laughed.

    “You look beautiful.” He said.

    “The other dress was prettier.”

“You don’t need the dress to be beautiful.”

“I think all the time you’ve been spending in France are affecting your behavior. Anytime now you’ll be kissing my hand.”

Vaughn smiled, and brought her hand up to his lips.

Sydney laughed, and pulled her hand back. She could feel it burning on the spot his lips had touched it.

“Will you escort me downstairs, my gentleman?”

“It will be my pleasure.” Vaughn said, offering an arm to her. Sydney linked her own arm through his, giving a final look at the mirror.

    “I missed you.”

“I missed you too, Syd.” He said, as he put a hand over the one that rested on his arm.

“I’m glad you came.” She said. Vaughn smiled at her, his silent ‘me too’. Sydney smiled back at him and Vaughn had the comfortable sensation of a man returning to his home.

“Mommy! Mommy! Mommy! Look.” Ailish said, running to her mother and raising the china doll as high as her arms allowed her.

“Ooh, it’s beautiful, sweetheart.” Sydney said, taking the doll to look closer at it.

“Uncle Michael gave it to me. She’s French.” Ailish nodded her head solemnly, to confirm her words.

“Did you thank Uncle Michael?” Sydney asked, giving the doll back to her daughter.

Ailish looked up at Vaughn and hugged his leg.

“Thank you, Uncle Michael. I love it.” She said.

Vaughn picked her up, settling her on his lap.

    “You’re welcome, honey.”

“Kiss.” Ailish said, and kissed Vaughn’s cheek. She looked at Sydney. “Now mommy.”

Sydney, distracted by someone waving goodbye, didn’t hear her daughter.

    “What, honey?”

“You kiss Uncle Vaughn thank you.” Ailish said.

“Oh, alright.” Sydney said. No big deal. She had kissed Vaughn more times than she could count. They were friends.

She gave him a friendly peck on the cheek.

“No, mommy. Adults kiss on the lips.” Ailish explained.

“Only when they are boyfriend and girlfriend. Mommy and Uncle Michael are not.”

“On the lips.” Ailish insisted. “Like adults.”

Sydney sighed. Her daughter could be quite stubborn sometimes. Damn those Bristow genes.

She kissed Vaughn briefly on the lips. Ailish squealed.

“You are boyfriend and girlfriend now.” She announced.

    “What?” Sydney exclaimed.

“You kissed on the lips. You’re boyfriend and girlfriend. You said it mommy, you said it.”

“You go play with your doll now, sweetie.” Vaughn said, putting Ailish down. The girl looked up at them with a glee in her eyes, and ran outside.

“She’s a pesky little thing, that one.” Vaughn said, as he took Sydney hand in his and they continued to walk around.

“She wants me to date you.” Sydney said, sounding suddenly tired.

    “I know.”

“She’s always asking me why you’re not my husband.”

“What do you say to her?”

“I say we’re just friends, and that we don’t like each other on a dating way.”

“Good answer. And I bet she asks why not.”

“Oh, yes. It’s an endless, maddening circle.”

Vaughn squeezed her hand, and smiled at her.

    “Hey, they’re your genes.”

    “Bad genes.”

“Wonderful genes.” He corrected. “Now if you don’t mind I’ll go save your father from dying of boredom and that woman of dying in his hands.”

“How can he die of boredom and then kill her?”

“I don’t know. You father has methods.”

“Alright, you go on with your double rescue and I’ll be brave and face The Moms.”

    Vaughn’s face twisted in pity.

“Poor thing. Do you want me to go with you?”

“Thanks, but facing The Moms is a ritual I have to go through by myself.” Sydney said, and Vaughn almost laughed at how dramatic they were making the simple fact of chatting with the mothers of Ailish’s friends. But then he remembered how things had went last year, and decided they were underestimating reality.

“If you need help,” he said, leaning in to whisper on her ear. “I can always pass by and spill some juice on your dress.”

    Sydney smiled.

    “I’ll keep that in mind.”

Hope you'll enjoy... Read on. ;)

Vaughn reached out a hand for Sydney, and she walked to the couch, seating next to him, her hand resting lazily on his tight. He passed an arm around her shoulders as she settled in a comfortable position against his chest.

“I’m so glad you came.” She said.

    “You told me that already.”

    “Well, I am.”

“I wouldn’t miss all those free hotdogs for anything in the world.”

    Sydney smiled.

“It was a good party, wasn’t it?”

“It was a wonderful party.” He said, stroking her hair absently. “You must be tired.” He looked at Ailish, curled up on the floor, hugging her new doll. “She sure is.”

Sydney smiled sweetly at her daughter.

“She was frantic the whole day. Guess the battery had to die down eventually. I’ll put her in bed, then I’ll-“

Vaughn cut her off, pulling her back to the couch as she started to get up.

“You’ll do nothing.” He said. “You spent the whole day running from side to side, I didn’t see you sit down once, until now. You’re exhausted, your feet are killing you and you want nothing more than to go to bed, so go. I’ll tuck Ailish in, bring you some tea and tomorrow we’ll take care of this mess.”

He made a wide arm movement, to include the whole living room. It looked like a hurricane had passed by.

Sydney would have protested, but she and Vaughn were way pass the say-no-to-be-polite phase.

“What would I do without you?” She said, smiling at him.

“Wither away and die, I suppose.” He said, getting up. He wasn’t in the least surprised when Sydney smacked him in the back.

    “But you love me anyway.”

    “Yeah, right.”

“I am going to be offended by that comment tomorrow.”

    “Why just tomorrow?”

“It wouldn’t be fun if I got offended today. You’re not strong enough to put up a fight.”

    “Wanna bet?’

“No, I’d hate to see you lose.” He said, as he carefully scooped Ailish and the doll up in his arms.

Sydney was going to reply, but the only thing that came out of her mouth was a yawn.

“I think…” She said, getting up from the couch with some effort. “You’ll really have to wait until tomorrow.”

“I’m a patient man. Now go to bed, Sydney Bristow, or do you want me to carry you as well?”

“Tempting, but I think I can make it there on my own.” She said.

Vaughn was already climbing up the stairs with Ailish still soundly asleep on his arms.

“Good luck on the journey.” He said, looking quickly over his shoulder and smiling at her.

    “Uncle Michael?”

    “Yes, dear?”

    “Will you marry mommy?”

Vaughn froze, but quickly recovered, pulling the quilt up and tucking it under Ailish’s chin and seating at the bedside.

    “Why’d you ask that, Aili?”

“I was dreaming… that you were my daddy… To be my daddy, you’d have to marry mommy, right?”

“Wrong.” He said, smiling at her. “I’m not married with Sydney, but I still love you as if you were my own daughter.”

“Alright… but I still wish you’d marry mommy.” Ailish said dreamily, starting to fall back into slumber.

Vaughn kissed her forehead, put the new doll next to her, and got up.

“For a long time, I wished I’d marry mommy too.” Vaughn whispered, switched off the lights, and walked out of the room.

“Sydney? I brought your tea.” Vaughn said, walking inside the bedroom. He couldn’t help but smile to himself as he saw Sydney already fast asleep. He put the mug with the tea down and walked to her. She was lying flat on her stomach, her feet dangling off the bed.

Vaughn knew she would be complaining about her back hurting the whole morning on the next day, so he carefully moved her so she was no longer in a diagonal angle, and turned her around. Sydney didn’t even stir.

He covered her up, just as he had done to Ailish, and stroked her cheek softly.

    “Good night, Syd.”

you're just too good to be true
can't take my eyes off of you
you'd be like heaven to touch
i wanna hold you so much

The song mingled into her dreams, before Sydney’s fuzzy conscience realized it was actually coming from downstairs. She smiled sleepily, and swung her legs out of bed. Not minding to change, she followed the direction of the music, barefooted and in pajamas.

She stopped, and watched with a smile on her face Vaughn and Ailish singing and dancing around the kitchen, as they prepared breakfast.

“Mommy, look!” Ailish exclaimed as soon as she saw her. “We’re dancing!”

“I can see that.” Sydney said, smiling.

“Come dance with us.” Ailish said.

“Mommy is still too sleepy to dance, honey.”

“Come on, please? Dance with us?” Ailish insisted.

“Yes, come on, Syd, dance with us.” Vaughn tagged along, offering a hand to Sydney.

She shook her head, but allowed herself to be pulled to the middle of the kitchen.

Sydney slowly let herself loose, as Vaughn, with Ailish in his arms, turned her around, laughing and singing. She got involved in the happy atmosphere, and sang the lyrics along.

The three of them clad in pajamas, dancing in the kitchen and laughing just for the pleasure of it. It was the perfect picture of a happy family.

Only they weren’t a family, no matter how much as the three of them wanted to.

But that fact was forgotten for the moment, as Ailish climbed on Vaughn’s shoulders and he pulled Sydney to him, as if it was something he had been doing for his whole life. And Sydney let herself be involved in his arms, with the same sensation of strange familiarity.

This was what home felt like.

I love you baby and if it's quite alright
I need you baby to warm the lonely nights
I love you baby, trust in me when I say
oh pretty baby, don't let me down, I pray
oh pretty baby, now that I've found you, stay
and let me love you, oh baby, let me love you, oh baby
