A few years ago MTV's documentary, "True Life" had an episode called, "I'm coming out." They featured three young adults who were homosexual. There was this guy who was in his mid to late 20's and I can't remember his name, so I'll call him James. Forgive me for any inaccuracies because it's been years since I watched this episode.
James grew up in a strict Mormon household. He always knew that he was gay and came out to his sister first. She wasn't supportive and told him that he should expect to be disowned by their family. He came out to them anyway and as expected they disowned him. He was so distraught that he went to a preist and asked him for some help. The preist gave him a number of a college professor in the South known to "fix" homosexuals so they can be straight. So, James drove down to the South found the professor and asked him to "fix" him. The professor told James to buy all the gay porn magazines he could find so he can turn them into slides.
Warning, this next part is a bit graphic because it involves electrocution.
He did this at the university that he taught at. After the professor had turned the pictures into slides, he brought James into a dark room, sat James down and attached electrodes to his chest, and genitals. Using a projection machine, the professor presented the slides and sent a mild shock to James's body when they began the session. With each slide the shocks became more and more intense and this lasted for at least an hour. He showed the MTV cameras the scars on his chest and it confirms his story Soon after, James realized that he was never going to be "cured" or "fixed" of his homosexuality and tried to kill himself. He went into therapy and he is now doing fine. His family hasn't spoken to him but he now has a group of friends that he considers to be his new family.
The professor and the university deny ever being associated with James.
Whenever I think of this, I can't help but cry. It literally pains me to know how cruel we as humans can be to one another. Yes, James did choose to see this professor but it was the professor that chose to torture James just because he thinks homosexuality is a disorder that can be fixed.
I believe that sexuality is apart of our genetics, not a decision. I've met and known
a lot of gay people and not one has ever said that they choose to be gay, it's just who they are and that they've always known this. So, no, I don't believe in "yestergays" like Stephen Daldry or "Hasbians" like Anne Heche. I know that I'm going to get a lot of flak for saying this, but I believe yestergays and hasbians are just individuals who are afraid to say that they're bisexual.
Personally, I can't believe that someone can claim once to be gay because I can't claim once to be Cambodian-American, I just AM and I will always and nothing can change that.
And on a different note, I saw this picture on americablog.org and had to post it
