Chapter 17
Flashback
Sydney sat on her back porch. It was a chilly morning and her divorce was finally official. She held a picture of Vaughn in her hand thinking what he might be doing. She hoped he was happy because she cared about him deeply and still she wished he could be there with her. She smiled grateful to have known him though still angry with herself for not holding on to him. She wanted them to still be at least friends but knew that talking to him without being able to be with him would be even harder to handle. She felt she had missed out on her opportunity to be happy with him and now she had no choice but to stay away to save herself from even more pain. Besides she had good enough reasons to torment herself as it was. Then she sighed thinking how easily the illusion of safety can fade leaving you with nothing but doubt and a tangled up life with no clear way out. She found it unfair but there unfortunately there was nothing to be done about it.
Then she finally got up wanting to take a walk to clear her head but stopped hearing a knock on the door. She curiously turned her head in the direction of the house thinking who it might be. She hesitated not really feeling social but decided to see who it was anyway. To her unfortunate surprise she stood face to face with her ex husband upon opening front door.
“What do you want?” Sydney asked standing in the doorway.
“Aren’t you going to invite me in?” Andrew replied and without waiting for an answer entered.
“What do you want?” Sydney repeated her question.
“Nice place you’ve got here. Must have cost you a fortune,” he continued ignoring her question.
“What are you doing here?” Sydney questioned feeling annoyed and wishing she had pretended to be away.
“I just wanted to see how you are doing,” Andrew replied moving closer to her.
“When I said I never wanted to have anything to do with you I meant it,” Sydney said firmly moving away from him.
“Harsh. But I’ll forgive you. Just come back to me,” he replied coolly.
“Never. And now be so kind and show yourself out,” Sydney simply stated as she turned her back on him and begun walking upstairs.
“Fine,” he replied and begun to leave but changed his mind after noticing a picture of Vaughn on her end table which Sydney had left there on her way to open the door. He turned around and followed her up the stairs determent to get an explanation.
“I didn’t want to believe it but you really were cheating on me, weren’t you?” he asked shoving the picture under her nose.
“Leave me alone. We are not married anymore and I’m not supposed to tell you anything,” she replied trying to get past him.
“Is that so,” he yelled and shoved her. That’s when Sydney lost her balance and since he did nothing to help her she simply fell down the stairs and lost her consciousness.

Both Irina and Michael were shocked to hear her revelation. Andrew probably hadn’t intended to hurt her but it was no excuse for what he had done. They realised that it may be considered as an unfortunate accident so informing the police might end up being a big waste of time. And since there were no witnesses and her divorce had become official just recently she could have been considered a liar. After all they could never prove he shoved her and it would have ended up being her word against his. So yes it was one mess they didn’t want to drag her into no matter how much they wanted to see her ex pay for all the pain he had caused her. After all the last thing they ever wanted was someone accusing her of wanting to commit suicide as a result of depression. Since truthfully she was an easy target. Her husband had been cheating on her and then followed the long and painful divorce. It could have always been said that she finally broke down after trying to be strong for so long and holding it all in. She simply had a hard time coping so she decided to throw herself down the stairs as a random act of madness and a cry for help. And now in her state of denial she simply decided to blame the ex.
“Don’t worry darling. He’ll never hurt you again. I promise,” Irina said in a serious tone and turned around to leave the room.
“Mom please don’t leave me,” Sydney cried out to her.
“I’ll be back soon. And Michael is here with you. He is not going anywhere,” Irina replied trying to reassure her daughter. Making sure that Sydney had calmed down first she left.
“Vaughn I know I don’t have the right to ask you this but can I go to Paris with you?” she asked sounding hopeful after a long moment of silence.
“As on a vacation?” he replied with a question.
“No. I need to get away from here and I was hoping I could stay with you for the time being,” she explained herself.
“If you are sure it’s what you really want then of course I don’t mind the company,” he replied with a warm smile.
“Thank you,” she said feeling relived and grateful.
“Why do I feel there is something you are not telling me?” he asked feeling he had to.
“Maybe because you are right,” she suggested.
“You know you can trust me,” he replied wanting to know what she was hiding form him.
“What if I don’t trust myself?” she questioned.
“Sydney… Please. Talk to me,” he said looking at her caringly.
“I’ve missed you. I care about you. I wish there could be an us again and I know I have no right to expect that you are still interested in me after all the mistakes I’ve made. I never chose us over anything but I don’t regret my life. I’ve experienced so many wonderful things and I understand if you think I’m saying this just because I’m scared of being alone again but… Truthfully… What I feel when I’m around you always seems to be too good to be true and I’m not used to being that happy,” Sydney blurted out and begun to cry.
Vaughn just smiled at her last comment thinking how adorably childish it had just sounded.
“Please don’t make fun of me,” Sydney pleaded and turned her head away from him.
“Well then you’ll just have to get used to it,” he said and took her hand in his.
“What?” she asked confused.
“I’m willing to try if you are,” he simply replied and kissed her lips indicating he still loved her.
