Chapter 30: Meeting Of Minds

Jack Bristow was sitting in his office at SD-6, reading over some reports when

Sydney opened the door.

"Sydney. I see Arvin told you about me. I think when you leave you should act

at least a little surprised."

"He did." Sydney nodded. "We need to talk."

Jack sat and stared at a spot on his desk. "Dinner tonight. My place, we'll get

take out. I have a few questions for you too."

Sydney's eyebrow quirked. Jack's imitated hers. The staring contest they had

going was interrupted by a knock on the door.

"I'll be there at seven." Sydney replied before stepping out the door.

At 6:58pm Sydney was knocking on her father's door. He opened the door a

little before stepping aside to let Sydney walk in. He gestured to a comfortable

looking seat in his living room for her to sit in.

"The food will be here in a few minutes." Jack stated as he sat across from

her.

"Good I'm kinda hungry."

"Yes, me too. Sydney, I've had someone following you, uh for safety purposes

the last couple days." Jack said.

"You what?"

"I had you followed. To make sure Sloane wasn't having you followed. They

saw you, with Agent Vaughn. Sydney, I don't want you to-"

Sydney cut Jack off, "You had me followed! I bumped into Vau-- Agent Vaughn

while I was out with Francie. After we initially bumped into each other Francie

initiated the other contact."

Jack scowled at her, "You bumped into his lips Sydney. Repeatedly. That is

against protocol to start. It could very well get you killed second. And finally, your

friend Francie has made several phone calls to Agent Weiss. That, more than

anything, will spark Sloane's interest." The doorbell chose to ring at that moment.

He ran to the door and gave the delivery boy some money and brought in the food.

They started eating before either Bristow said another word.

"I don't see the problem with this Daddy. I think this is a great idea. Sure, at

first he will be curious, but it'll help my cover. I'm supposed to know we're black

ops, so even though they're CIA I wouldn't be able to tell them. They would slow

down on following me around and I'd be able to get my counter missions while out

with my friends. Sloane might even take me into his confidence, ask me to be a

double for him." Sydney blurted.

"Sydney, while that all makes sense, the first thing they would do is give you a

test. It's a lie detector that only about five percent of the world's population could

pass. Even if you're telling the truth there are times that it triggers. I can't let you

do that."

Jack's eyes met Sydney's, both trying to read into the other's expression.

They had reached a stale mate. Jack broke away first. Getting up to throw away the

food containers.

"Sydney, I just don't see how doing this can have a good out come. Think it

over. Please."

Sydney looked at her father with an odd expression, "I will. We will discuss

this tomorrow. There are certain circumstances that make this difficult."

"Fine then. Tomorrow." Jack nodded as Sydney walked out the door.

Chapter 31: Musings at Sundown

Sydney drove home in total silence. She wasn't sure what she should do. She

knew that she could make it work either way. Sloane was not a very bright man.

Well, maybe he was, but he was blind when it came to her. There had been several

times that she could have been dragged in and she supposed, killed. If she had

been anyone else, she would have been.

She knew what the answer would have to be. She wanted to know how the lie

detector worked. She wanted Sloane to slip up. She was afraid that Vaughn was

interested in her because of the danger, not her. She wanted to be sure of

something and at this point it didn't matter what it was.

It wasn't because of him that she was worried, but she hadn't ever had a great track

record with guys. Before Danny, there was Noah, he was different, a true pig.

Before Noah was Rick who liked to wear her clothes. Then there was her high school

sweetheart Paul who actually tried to sue her for the cost of all the money he spent

on dances and presents he gave her.

Yeah, Vaughn was different. She knew it. She just wanted to be able to show the

world he was different. He is the one. She was quite positive. Her heart felt like it

was going to burst when he came into view. When he wasn’t around, all Sydney

could think about is him. She had been trained to be able to block those thoughts

out when she was in the field. Now though, she was sure even when she was in the

middle of fighting two overgrown apes she would be thinking of him.

If she had to, she would wait forever to be with him at this point. Forever might be a

long time, but it would be even longer if she didn't have Michael Vaughn to look

forward to. That wasn't the big issue though.

She had an unknown variable named Francie Calfo living with her. Sydney didn't

know how interested she was in Weiss. Francie likes guys. All guys, Weiss is one of

them. That could keep Francie amused for months. She would have to talk to Weiss.

Have him stage a disappearance of some kind.

She guessed that now was as good a time as any. Sydney pulled out her phone and

started making phone calls. Tomorrow was going to be a very long day.

Another chapter! I'm back. I'm back. I'm back! I have everything arranged for my sugery. Just as a warning, there will be a couple of days last week I will be in the hospital, so the story will be put on hold. Unless I can crank out the chapters between now and then. Have fun reading!

Chapter 32: A Sign of Things To Come

Vaughn was examining two packages of hamburger at the supermarket when

his phone rang.

"Vaughn."

"Hey, it's me. We need to meet. Bring Weiss, we'll meet tomorrow morning

around eight."

"Hey, uh sure Syd. Is anything wrong?"

"We'll talk about it tomorrow. I have to go."

Before Vaughn could say bye his phone had disconnected. He brushed it off,

knowing Sydney was probably sneaking to make the call. He continued his

shopping. Thinking about why Sydney would want to talk to Eric.

His mind only wandered for about a second. It must be his friendship with a

certain friend that Sydney lived with. Vaughn felt bad for Francie, but knew it was

the right thing to do. Eric should have known better. Vaughn kicked himself, he

should've known better.

He should have been on high alert. Making sure no one knew about their

meeting at the bar the other night. As soon as they bumped into each other, he

should have run. Dragging Eric by his collar out the door. A trigger didn't even go

off when Francie kept looking over at them.

What kind of a handler was he? He had broken enough rules to destroy a

career in less than a week. Falling in love with an asset is bad enough, but then

introducing said asset's best friend to your agent buddy, stupid, stupid, stupid.

As soon as he finished his shopping Eric would be getting a phone call. No, he

wouldn't. Mike decided he would just go to Eric's. He would do everything in his

power to convince him to leave Francie until Sydney's status changed.

Vaughn walked down the canned goods aisle and realized he couldn't focus

enough to buy anything. He left his carriage when he had stopped and bolted from

the store. He sped the entire way to Weiss' house. This was just to crazy to let slide

for any longer.

Vaughn didn't even bother knocking. Storming in to Eric's living room, "We

need to talk." He stated, with a fire burning in his eyes. "Francie cannot be contacted

by you again."

Eric looked up at Vaughn finally, tearing his eyes from the television screen.

"I know, man. It's cool. Jack Bristow called me. He seemed a lot less angry

than you though. Why don't you come in, grab a slice," He pointed to a box sitting

on the coffee table, "and relax. He has everything taken care of. Francie's cell and

home numbers have been blocked from mine. I can't call her."

"Good." Vaughn took a seat on the opposite end of Eric's couch, grabbing a

slice of pizza and taking a huge bite all in one motion. He finished chewing before

saying; "We have to meet with Sydney tomorrow morning. I'm pretty sure it's about

this whole mess. I can't believe I let this happen."

"Do you really blame yourself, Mike?" Eric asked.

"If I had just left when I saw her. None of us would have to worry about this."

"Are you serious? You were both out. Not a big deal. Apparently we live fairly

close together. We're all adults. We go to the same place to have a drink. Still not a

big deal. I gave Francie my phone number. Huge deal. I mean sure she's a great

girl, but I had no right. I made the problem. I have fixed it. Okay?"

Vaughn nodded his head. "Okay. We'll have to deal with Sydney tomorrow, but

we'll face that together. It should be fine."

"Yeah, see, you aren't a bad handler. You care enough about Sydney that it's

a good thing. You aren't just worried about the next time you two are going to bang.

That's what the CIA is worried about."

"When you put it so delicately, how can I fight you?" Mike cracked.

"Look, I'm just saying, you care about all of Sydney. You will always make

sure she is unharmed. That she gets out of every mission in one whole, sane,

unscratched piece."

"Yeah, yeah, I do."

"Nice, anyway, Mike, if we have to meet Sydney at eight tomorrow, I need to

get my beauty sleep. And you, princess, look like you're behind by a few months.

So do me a favor, go home and go to bed."

"Ha ha." Vaughn rolled his eyes and left.
