Chapter 30: Meeting Of Minds
Jack Bristow was sitting in his office at SD-6, reading over some reports when
Sydney opened the door.
"Sydney. I see Arvin told you about me. I think when you leave you should act
at least a little surprised."
"He did." Sydney nodded. "We need to talk."
Jack sat and stared at a spot on his desk. "Dinner tonight. My place, we'll get
take out. I have a few questions for you too."
Sydney's eyebrow quirked. Jack's imitated hers. The staring contest they had
going was interrupted by a knock on the door.
"I'll be there at seven." Sydney replied before stepping out the door.
At 6:58pm Sydney was knocking on her father's door. He opened the door a
little before stepping aside to let Sydney walk in. He gestured to a comfortable
looking seat in his living room for her to sit in.
"The food will be here in a few minutes." Jack stated as he sat across from
her.
"Good I'm kinda hungry."
"Yes, me too. Sydney, I've had someone following you, uh for safety purposes
the last couple days." Jack said.
"You what?"
"I had you followed. To make sure Sloane wasn't having you followed. They
saw you, with Agent Vaughn. Sydney, I don't want you to-"
Sydney cut Jack off, "You had me followed! I bumped into Vau-- Agent Vaughn
while I was out with Francie. After we initially bumped into each other Francie
initiated the other contact."
Jack scowled at her, "You bumped into his lips Sydney. Repeatedly. That is
against protocol to start. It could very well get you killed second. And finally, your
friend Francie has made several phone calls to Agent Weiss. That, more than
anything, will spark Sloane's interest." The doorbell chose to ring at that moment.
He ran to the door and gave the delivery boy some money and brought in the food.
They started eating before either Bristow said another word.
"I don't see the problem with this Daddy. I think this is a great idea. Sure, at
first he will be curious, but it'll help my cover. I'm supposed to know we're black
ops, so even though they're CIA I wouldn't be able to tell them. They would slow
down on following me around and I'd be able to get my counter missions while out
with my friends. Sloane might even take me into his confidence, ask me to be a
double for him." Sydney blurted.
"Sydney, while that all makes sense, the first thing they would do is give you a
test. It's a lie detector that only about five percent of the world's population could
pass. Even if you're telling the truth there are times that it triggers. I can't let you
do that."
Jack's eyes met Sydney's, both trying to read into the other's expression.
They had reached a stale mate. Jack broke away first. Getting up to throw away the
food containers.
"Sydney, I just don't see how doing this can have a good out come. Think it
over. Please."
Sydney looked at her father with an odd expression, "I will. We will discuss
this tomorrow. There are certain circumstances that make this difficult."
"Fine then. Tomorrow." Jack nodded as Sydney walked out the door.
