The New Girl

Chapter 13-Ready For Anything

CIA Operations Center

Rachel was escorted down a hallway, pass countless checkpoints, and to Director Dixon's office.

"So, you're Rachel Reed." he said, shaking her hand.

"Yes, sir. It's great to be here."

"It's great to have you here. Listen..." he leaned in close and whispered "I know it must be hard for you, being as your late sister was a terrorist. People might give you funny looks, or think you're vulnerable around here. I wanted to know where you stand on that."

She stood back. "Mr. Dixon, after being debriefed and finding out that my sister had been captured and assassinated at Camp Harris..." She sighed and went on "I'm pretty sure I'm ready for anything."

"Well, that's great." he said. "Let me show you around."

For the next hour or so, Dixon showed Rachel the clearanced areas of the Ops Center. He also introduced her to Marshall and Carrie. He then asked Rachel to come into the conference room.

"Okay, let's get right to it." he said, after she took a seat.

"When Irina Derevko was under the alias 'Laura Bristow' she was ordered to hide a parcel or package in the backyard of the Bristow house in Charleston, West Virginia. She supposedly had it underground, and that hiding place had been named 'the cave.' At one time, it was known as "Rambaldi Gathering." This lead us to believe that it's a place where the Followers of Rambaldi, at least, the ones that are still around, are going to come together in some ceremony. Former agents Bristow, Sydney and Jack, Agent Michael Vaughn, and Irina Derevko, whom is living with Jack and whom we granted immunity some time ago, have volunteered to go on the mission to find the cave and get there before whoever's trying to get there does first."

"Any idea who that person is?" Rachel asked.

"It's speculation, but our best guess is that it's someone who went solo after the Covenant was dismanled. Rachel, your first assignment is to visit Sydney, and bring her and Vaughn back."

"As you know, I knew Sydney at SD-6 years ago. This probably won't be a problem."

"Good. That's good to hear."

~~

Rachel left Ops Center and was taken to her house courtesy of the agency. She got in her car and drove to a nearby liquor store.

As she drove, she thought, It's going to be nice to see Sydney again.

~~

The figure walked out of the bar and put on a pair of sunglasses. The sun was shining brightly, and the figure frowned. Then a smile appeared as a long black car drove up and the figure got in.

"Thank god." it spoke while sitting down. "I thought you weren't coming."

"Never. I'm never late. Did you recieve my instructions?"

"Yes, sir."

"Good. The equipment is in the trunk. We're heading there now. And don't call me sir."

"Sorry, Julian."

He laughed. "Yeah, it's strange. Haven't heard people call me Mr. Sark in a while? I guess people are starting to like me, eh?"

"Maybe some. So, where've you been?"

"I broke out of CIA custody during my outdoor privelages."

~~

Rachel pulled in front of Sydney and Vaughn's house. She got out of her car and walked to the door.

She knocked.

"Hold on a sec." said Sydney's voice.

She opened the door.

"Hey, Syd." Rachel said.

"Do I know you? I'm sorry. Can I help you?"

Rachel's instincts kept her normal face on.

Maybe she shouldn't have brought the wine.

Sydney must be drunk.

Either that, or she's gone insane in the past years since I've seen her.

Why doesn't she remember me?

that will be resolved sooner than u think...muaahahha...and wen u find out whos working with sark...muahahaha

:robot: dance, my puppet readers...dance.

:run: ahhhh! they've run amock! someone! heeeelllp!

Chapter 14-Slipped In

"I'm Rachel Reed. The agency sent me. They approved the cave mission..."

"Please, come in." Sydney said.

~~

Sark sat in the black car nearby, on a side road.

"That's amazing." he said. "And you did this?"

"If it weren't for me, this agent's job would be a lot easier. They'd be walking out the door right now."

"So, you're sure you did it right? I mean, if she sees you--"

"Nothing will happen."

"What if Rachel--"

"Would you stop worrying so much?"

Sark said nothing.

"Do you want to move, or not?" the figure asked.

"Yes. Let's go." he said, opening the door of the car. He moved to the back door and opened it, offering his hand but looking away.

"Let's." said the figure.

~~

"So, have you contacted my parents yet?" Sydney asked.

"Well, the plan was to pick you and Agent Vaughn up, we would go to the Rotunda and Agent Bristow and Irina Derevko will meet us there."

Actually, I was hoping we would be able to catch up on things, have a chat, laugh, reminisce. I never expected this.

"Here, have something to drink." Sydney offered Rachel a tray of lemonade, coffee, and tea.

"No, thank you." she said.

~~

Jack sat at his computer, typing a desperate message to Dixon:

From: jack.bristow@yahoo.com
To: ops.director@cia.gov
Subject: Threat

I've been following this for a while. Trying to protect her has been an impossible task. Marcus, there is going to be an assassination attempt on my daughter. Yes, it's confirmed. Although the direct suspect is unknown, I expect a link to the same person who is trying to get to the cave. We need to get to her before it's too late.

I'm on my way. Get ready ASAP.

Jack

"Jack? Is everything alright?" he turned around in his chair to see Irina standing in the doorway. He reached behind him and pressed the SEND button. The e-mail disappeared from the screen.

"We need to have a talk, Irina."

She uncertainly stepped into the room.

Later, she sat on their bed, crying.

"Are you sure this is all true?" she asked.

"Yes, I've been following it for a while."

"All this time..."

"I've e-mailed Dixon."

"We should go." she said, wiping the tears and springing into adrenaline-mode. "We want to get there before it's too late."

~~

Sark and his associate sat in position.

"You ready."

"You bet I am." he replied. He took out the gun and placed his finger on the trigger.

Jack, Irina, and a CIA tactical team made their way towards the house from the other side.

"Rachel!" Jack and Irina screamed unanimously as they ran. "Sydney!"

Inside the house, they both turned their heads and their eyes widened.

hey, dude crystal! lighten up! hey, sheilas, cliffhangers are something you should be used to by now lol!

me and my australian accent...rotflmao!

Chapter 15-Faith

They flew through the front door, brandishing guns. Rachel and Sydney ducked behind the couch just in time.

Sniper bullets flew past and above their heads, shattering glass.

"Oh my...what the.." Sydney couldn't manage to finish a sentence. All she kept thinking about was Vaughn. He had gone out.

Is he okay? Is someone making a move on him?

"Sydney, Rachel, we've got to move." Jack said. "Let's go! Get out of here! We're taking you back to Ops Center."

"We need to find Michael! He left this morning to buy a coat rack--"

"We'll search for him." Irina said. "Girls, we've got to get out of here."

They were rushed out of the house and into a CIA vehicle.

~~

Vaughn lay in bed beside Sydney. She slept peacefully, her arm across him.

His thoughts drifted from past memory to past memory with Sydney, thinking how he ever could have moved on to someone else. Luckily, she was gone now. He pulled her close. She stirred and smiled in her sleep. He smiled. She opened her eyes.

"Hi." she said.

"Hey. Remember that time when you called me and told me in code that you were going to Russia?"

"I think so." she said, yawning. "Why?"

He sighed. "I remember you telling me to hang a picture by the coat rack in my house. That's how I knew you were secretly telling me something else, because I didn't have a coat rack in my house. Why don't we get one?"

"Mikey, you want to go out at..." she bent over to look at the alarm clock. "...7:47 in the morning to get a coat rack?"

"Yes. I do."

She laughed. "Okay. Whatever you want." She curled up in the covers and closed her eyes.

He brushed her hair softly, got up off the bed, took a quick shower and got dressed. He grabbed his keys and left.

The loud sound of the front door closing made Sydney open her eyes again, since she wasn't that sleepy anymore.

'He forgot to say I love you.'

~~
CIA Operations Center-Joint Task Force on Intelligence

Rachel and Sydney walked through the main office area, along with Jack and Irina. This sight turned heads, for many reasons. For one, it was the first time Irina had been back since she was let go.

They met Dixon in the conference room. Jack took over the meeting and began to explain to everyone what was going on.

"The team recovered Sark's car. They found, among other things, an audio recorder. We found a file that contained a conversation on it, between Sark and someone else."

"We couldn't identify Mr. Sark's associate." Marshall spoke up. "Now, I worked on this as much as I could, but the voice of whom we assume to be his partner was disguised. It's unrecognizable. But, uh, anyway..." he played the file.

"She won't remember Rachel." the disguised voice said.

"How can you be so sure?" asked Sark's voice.

"About three or four years ago, after Sydney Bristow was in the Covenant's custody, she had her memory wiped. That's why she didn't remember those two years of her life. The thing is, I slipped in and erased other certain parts of her memory. Paticularly the ones with Rachel Reed."

Marshall stopped the file.

Sydney felt sick. She got up and rushed out of the conference room. Rachel frowned and got up and followed her. Everyone else just sat in shock.

Rachel followed her into a darkened hall. "Syd!" she called. "Sydney, stop!"

Sydney stopped and turned around. She looked at Rachel with saddened, dark eyes. "That's why you looked at me funny. You were wondering why I didn't remember you."

"Listen--"

"I've had too many bombshells in my life. After Lauren was killed, the Covenant was destroyed, and my mother was granted immunity, I left the CIA. I left, because in my mind, it was all over. No more aliases, no more lying, no more...shocks. It just never ends."

"Sydney, we went on a mission." Rachel said, bringing Syd back to life.

"What?" Syd asked, bewildered.

"Back at SD-6. Chasing something that was supposed to help locate the cave. Also, my sister. Lauren."

"She...she was your sister?" She felt as if she was going to really throw up then. Everything seemed to be crashing down around her, again. So many things that she didn't know and now she did. She used to think she wanted to know the truth. Now, she didn't know what to think.

One tear ran down her cheek. Then a stream of tears shook her body. She slid down the wall to a sitting position and leaned against it.

Rachel kneeled down next to Sydney and put a hand on her shoulder.

~~
Two guards opened the back of a pick-up truck. They grabbed a man in a straight jacket and pushed him through a pair of sliding doors.

An agent dressed in all black watched from an alleyway nearby. He took out a cell phone and dialed the L.A. CIA number.

~~
Marshall leaned his head around the corner. "Ms. Bristow? Director Dixon needs to see you."

She wiped her tears away, got up, and walked past him out of the hallway. Rachel got up and walked out too. Marshall smiled as they both went past him, then, realizing he was just standing there, left the hallway.

A/N: I love those little Marhsall moments. Sometimes, they make it seem like the entire crazy world that these characters live in is sane somehow.

Sydney walked into the conference room. It was empty, except for Dixon standing there. He was looking down at the floor.

"What's going on?" she asked.

He looked up and into her eyes.

"We've got a location on Vaughn."

Twisted! So Lauren is Rachel's sis and Vaughn forgot to say "I love you" to Sydney (how can he forget that?!)...I wonder what Vaughn is up to.
