The Wedding

“Alright everyone! The ceremony is about to begin! The bride is there am I right?” the priest asked loudly.

The usher nodded, “Alright then, Let’s begin!” he nodded at the DJ who had his station at the left of the altar, who then put a record on his turn table. Sydney wanted a traditional wedding, but for the music, she wanted something different playing. None of this classical music, but a song that she always dreamed she would be listening to as she walked down the aisle. Thankfully, Vaughn agreed to have it playing in the background as well.

“Where’s my bouquet?!” Francie looked around frantically.

“Right over here,” Jack grabbed the bouquet and handed it to Francie as he turned the corner with Will, Marshall, and Weiss trailing behind him, “All of you look beautiful” he nodded at the three.

“Thanks Mr. Bristow,” Francie and Carrie smiled, they knew that a compliment from Jack Bristow was a one and a million.

Jack saw Nadia staring at the ground, “That implies to you as well, Nadia.” He smiled.

Being the child of the affair, even after Jack and Irina had gotten remarried and set aside their differences, there was always this invisible blockade between Jack and Nadia. But, as time went on, Jack had learned to love Nadia as if she were his own. Being Sydney’s younger sister, Jack wasn’t surprised how much Nadia reminded him of Sydney. She acted a lot like his daughter, caring and loving, and with no surprise, Nadia also inherited the trait that Sydney had gotten from Irina-stubborness.

Nadia looked up quickly, “Thank you Jack.”

Will went next to Francie, Marshall next to Carrie, and Weiss next to Nadia.

Sydney heard the music start and everyone rushed to their places.

“Hey S-“ Weiss nearly turned around before being slapped by Nadia.

“Weiss! You have to wait to see her like everyone else.” Nadia nodded in a matter of fact way.

“What? I’m not the groom!”

“Still!” Nadia smiled and Weiss turned around, defeated. He turned to see Nadia looking at the altar from where she was standing. The sea breeze moved her hair slightly across her face.

“You look really pretty today…” he said softly.

Nadia smiled and saw that Weiss had started to turn pink, she smiled and kissed him on the cheek, “Thank you, you look very handsome today Mr. Weiss,” she said as she straightened his tie.

Sydney laughed, she loved the interaction between her sister and Weiss, it reminded her very much of her and Vaughn. Jack came up next to his daughter, “You look absolutely stunning, honey” he kissed her on the cheek.

“Thanks Dad,” Sydney smiled, “You spoke to Vaughn didn’t you?” she asked as she watched Francie go first down the aisle with Will as her escort.

“Yes, I had a little chat with him about half an hour ago.” Jack and Sydney took another step forward.

“You didn’t hurt him did you? He’s still standing there right?” Sydney grinned

“Barely, but no, I didn’t hurt him, he’s still there,” Jack said. Sydney watched as Carrie and Marshall made their way down the red rose petal covered aisle.

“Thank you Dad.”

“For what, Sydney?” Jack turned and faced his daughter.

“Everything. Everything you’ve done for me. To protect me.” Sydney watched as her Maid of Honor, Nadia took her turn down the aisle with Weiss clinging to her arm.

“Sydney, you’re my daughter, I’d do anything for you. You know that. I may have no been the best father throughout your childhood, but remember, I always loved you, with all my heart.” Jack and Sydney took a step forward and soon faced the rose covered aisle. The DJ stopped the song that was previously playing to the song that Sydney had always dreamed of hearing on her wedding day “I’ll Be” by Edwin McCain, it had been one of her favorite songs throughout her life, but now that it was the song that was playing while she was walking down the aisle, the song that would be playing as she married Vaughn, it became her favorite song of all time.

“So this is it man?” Weiss leaned in and Vaughn turned his head slightly.

“Does this mean no more late night drinking with your old buddy?” Weiss whispered.

Vaughn tried to stifle his laughter and saw Sydney a few feet away from him. The ocean breeze making her curled hair move softly.

“Holy felgercarb…” Weiss whispered again. “Dude, she’s….she’s….”

“Beautiful,” Vaughn finished and smiled.

The strands in your eyes that color them wonderful

Stop me and steal my breath,

“Are you sure you want to do this Sydney, I mean you could always run.” Jack whispered before they started to make their way down the aisle.

“Dad…” Sydney groaned.

Emeralds from mountains thrust toward the sky
Never revealing their depth

“She looks hott doesn’t she?” Vaughn gulped leaned over to Weiss.

“Easy tiger…” Weiss replied.

Tell me that we belong together
Dress it up with the trappings of love

“But she does look hott though…” Vaughn said again.

I'll be captivated

“Ohhh yeah, no doubt about that buddy.”

Vaughn glared at him, “What?! You asked!” Weiss defended.

I'll hang from your lips
Instead of the gallows of heartache that hang from above

As Jack and Sydney made their way down the aisle, it was as if time had slowed down once she had locked eyes with Vaughn. She was suddenly hit with so many emotions all at once- with nervousness, joy, and most importantly, happiness. She was finally fulfilling her dream wedding. The wedding was exactly the way she dreamed of it when she was 10-years-old. She was marrying the kind of man she hoped she would meet and she had no doubt in her mind that she was making the best decision of her life.

I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be love suicide

Not breaking the connection they had, Vaughn smiled. The song filled his ears, he heard the sound of the waves crashing against the rocks. Everything had went as planned-perfection.

Sydney, seeing Vaughn, up at the altar, made her want to cry. ‘It’s too early for you to start crying Sydney, you’re not even down the aisle yet, wait till the vows and you can cry then’ she told herself.

I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

Just as the chorus had ended she realized that she was already at the altar. Sydney gave her bouquet to Nadia and turned to face her father. Jack leaned in and kissed his daughter’s forehead, “I love you, Sydney” he took her hand into his and grabbed for Vaughn’s and slipped Sydney’s hand into Vaughn’s, “Take care of my daughter Michael.”

He smiled, nodded stepped back, and took his seat next to Irina. Irina took Jack’s hand into hers and laid her head on his shoulder.

The song became softer but still audible and then the priest began.

……..

“Now for the wedding vows, Michael and Sydney decided to write their own vows. If you want, Michael, you may go first,” the priest nodded.

“Sydney…I remember when you first came into my office, with that ridiculous set of hair. We talk about that time often. I remember, going home that night and I was getting ready for bed, and I took my father’s watch off and saw that it had stopped…” Vaughn paused and looked at his father.

Bill smiled at his son and Antoinette grabbed her husband’s hand. Bill looked at his wife and smiled, then turned to his son and nodded for him to continue.

Sydney smiled with tears brimming in her eyes, “I-I didn’t realize it then, but then I remembered what my father had told me about it and I knew, I knew that I had found the one person I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with. My father had told me that I could set my heart by that watch and it was true. Sydney, you’re my guardian angel, you’re the love of my life, my soul-mate. I’m so happy you walked into my office, with that stupid bozo hair.” He laughed, “I love you more than life itself and will cherish you always.”

A single tear slid down Sydney’s cheek and Vaughn brushed it away. ‘I love you’ she mouthed. The song ended but soon began again from the beginning.

“Sydney…your turn sweetie,” the priest looked toward her.

She sighed and cleared her throat, “I remember meeting you Michael, and I remembered that at that point in time, my life sucked.” Sydney laughed and wiped away the many tears now falling down her cheeks. “And as we began working more and more with each other, I began to trust you, you seemed to be the one person that I could always count on to be there, through everything-anything.” The warm sea breeze ran through her hair and Vaughn felt as if he was floating on air, he continued to watch and listen to Sydney, “I found myself falling in love with you, I knew I wasn’t supposed to, but I couldn’t…I couldn’t help it, and I thought, ‘Hey! Screw protocol’…I, too, am happy that I walked into your office that day. Today’s the anniversary we met…the day your watch stopped. The day we fell in love. Michael…” she began crying harder and took a moment to compose herself. She took a deep breath and smelled the salt of the sea. Vaughn kept the same smile on his face. Sydney noticed that tears were starting to fill his eyes. “Michael…I wouldn’t know how to live my life if you weren’t with me. You love me unconditionally and always will. My heart belongs to you and will always belong to you. I love you, more then I can say…” Sydney choked.

“Oh God! That’s so beautiful!” Weiss sobbed. Everyone turned to him and tried not to laugh. “What?! Haven’t you seen a grown man cry before? I’m not good with weddings!” he shrugged and hid behind his tissue.

Vaughn and Sydney giggled and then faced one another again, “I’m sorry mine isn’t as good…” Sydney laughed and wiped her tears.

“No sweetheart, that was perfect.” Vaughn said with a smile, he too, now was also in tears.

…..

“With this ring…I thee wed…” Vaughn slipped the silver ring on Sydney’s finger.

“With this ring…I thee wed…” Sydney slipped on Vaughn’s ring.

“With that…Michael, you may ki-” the priest spoke aloud, but then the music that had been playing the background the whole time soon became louder it was towards the end. It seemed quite fitting. It was as if everyone was watching a movie and the camera to have done the “around-the-world” trick. Sydney and Vaughn didn’t need to hear the rest of the sentence and rushed into their kiss.

I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

“I announce to you all, for the first time ever, Mr. and Mrs. Michael Vaughn!”

I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be love suicide
I'll be better when I'm older
I'll be the greatest fan of your life

Vaughn and Sydney broke away from each other and smiled for the photographer who came right up in front of them. The newly wed couple made their way down the aisle with the bride’s maid and their escorts at their side again. Everyone began to fall out and walk into the dining hall.

……..

The immediate family, bride’s maids, and their escorts sat with the bride and groom at the long table that overlooked the hall. After eating to their hearts content, Weiss, who had a little too much to drink, started hitting his wine glass with a spoon. Sydney leaned over to Vaughn, “He’s not going to do anything stupid is he?”

“I hope not…” Vaughn replied.

Weiss got up on the stage, fumbling, “Oh God, he’s drunk…” Vaughn thought.

Weiss grabbed the microphone, “Okay, so…as the Best Man…I have to say something on account of the new Bride and Groom right?”

“Vaughn, is he drunk?” Nadia whispered.

Vaughn nodded, “I think so.”

“He’s not going to do something stupid, is he?”

“Probably…but I wanna see where this goes.”

“So, I had this nice little speech prepared for you all. I’ve known Mike and Syd for a long time now, okay for a couple of years!” he laughed at his own joke and saw that no one else was laughing, “What is this an oil painting?”

Everyone erupted in laughter, they all knew that Weiss was drunk. “There we go! That’s more like it!” he laughed again. “Okay, so, I always saw Sydney like my little sister and Mike my brother right? So…that would make them brother and sister if I see them like my relatives right? Ugh! Dude that’s gross!” he chuckled.

Sydney hid behind Vaughn, “Oh my God…”

“Let him finish,” Vaughn whispered and “we’ll get someone to drag him off stage after he makes an ass out of himself”

“Now, I don’t remember where I put my speech…he dug in his pockets, “so I decided that…that…I’d sing a song…a song by Betty..or is Bette? ...Miller!!!” Weiss laughed.

Everyone’s eyes who sat at the long table widened. Before Vaughn knew it, Weiss went all out, “Did you ever know that you're my herooooo, and everything I would like to beeee?!”

Will and Vaughn ran over and carried him offstage, “Hey, hey, hey! I wasn’t done yet!”

“You are now!” Vaughn sat him down and ran over to the mic, “Sorry about my friend everyone, he’s a little under the influence…”

Everyone laughed. Soon another glass started to clink. Vaughn turned around and saw that it was none other than Jack Bristow.

“If you don’t mind Vaughn, I’d like to say something…” Jack said with a stone face, “Since your best man doesn’t seem to be himself at the moment.”

Vaughn nodded and took his seat next to Sydney.

“My daughter, Sydney, is probably one of the best human beings that I’ve ever had the chance of knowing, and I’m not saying this because she’s my daughter, but I truly mean it. She’s a caring and loving person, a daughter that any father would be proud of.” He turned to Sydney and saw her blush and he continued, “Now, like every other father, no boy could ever be good enough for their daughter, I myself looked at it that way. No person could ever come up to my standards, till I met the one man that did.” Jack turned and looked straight at Vaughn. Vaughn looked at Jack, in amazement at what he was saying, whatever he was talking about, was anything anyone would expect Jack Bristow to say. Jack continued, “Michael Vaughn is the kind of man every father wishes and hopes that their daughter would meet and marry. Welcome to the family Michael.” Jack raised his glass, “To Michael and Sydney!”

Everyone followed and raised their glasses. Sydney turned to her new husband and kissed him lightly on the lips, “Yes, welcome to the family…”

“Are you sure you want to do this Sydney, I mean you could always run.” Jack whispered before they started to make their way down the aisle.

 typical Jack Bristow!

Sydney smiled with tears brimming in her eyes, “I-I didn’t realize it then, but then I remembered what my father had told me about it and I knew, I knew that I had found the one person I was supposed to spend the rest of my life with. this just keeps getting sweeter and sweeter!!

“Oh God! That’s so beautiful!” Weiss sobbed. Everyone turned to him and tried not to laugh. “What?! Haven’t you seen a grown man cry before? I’m not good with weddings!” he shrugged and hid behind his tissue.

 bless him!

I'll be your crying shoulder
I'll be love suicide
